  • Because an irradiation of 405 nm violet light could have a strong energy, it was used to be sterilized against various microbes in the indoor air condition or fresh food. Escherichia coli is a representative bio-pollutant in the indoor air-borne bacteria, and a hygienic microbe in the horticultural food. This study evaluated the inactivation influences on E. coli DS5α after exposure to 405 nm violet-light (VL) by investigating irradiating time, and the vertical and horizonal distance from light source. The illumination of 405 nm VL was inversely proportional to the distance from the VL source. E. coli DS5α on nutrient agar (NA) was inactivated approximately 50% more than the control when irradiated at 65 cm from 405 nm VL for 3 hours. When compared to the control, E. coli DS5α was inactivated approximately 50% within 70 cm from 405 nm VL for 3 hours. As it was irradiated for 3 hours 70 cm away from 405 nm VL, the horizonal distance from the point was negatively correlated to the inactivation of E. coli DS5α. These results indicated that the inactivation of E. coli DS5α grown on NA medium needs to be irradiated with 405 nm within 70 cm from the light source for 3 hours.

  • In this paper, we propose a mobile robot navigation algorithm using data fusion of a monocular camera and ultrasonic sensors. Threshold values for binary image processing are generated by a fuzzy inference method using image data and data of ultrasonic sensors. Threshold value variations improve obstacle detection for mobile robot to move to the goal under poor illumination environments. Obstacles detected by data fusion of camera and ultrasonic sensors are expressed on the grid map and avoided using the circular planning algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by experiments on the Pioneer 2-DX mobile robot in the indoor room with poor lights and a narrow corridor.

  • This study investigated the actual condition focusing on the lighting environment which is a major element in aspect of indoor environment of a public library and assessed user satisfaction. Research results are as follows: Firstly, numbers of lighting fixtures per dimension of a reading room in a public library were inconsistent due to the lack of definite regulations, which was found to have negative effect on night time illuminance. Secondly, it was assessed that illuminance between the day time influenced by natural lighting and in the nighttime without natural lighting has more than 10-fold difference. Therefore, such a condition is judged to be inappropriate for lighting environment of a reading room where users spend a long time studying and thus, it is considered that an appropriate measures should be taken. Thirdly, as the survey result on users' satisfaction with lighting environment was revealed to be lesser than 3 points, lighting plan in consideration of its users should be progressed.

  • This paper presents a new system to estimate the head pose of human in interactive indoor environment that has dynamic illumination change and large working space. The main idea of this system is to suggest a new morphological feature for estimating head angle from stereo disparity map. When a disparity map is obtained from stereo camera, the matching confidence value can be derived by measurements of correlation of the stereo images. Applying a threshold to the confidence value, we also obtain the specific morphology of the disparity map. Therefore, we can obtain the morphological shape of disparity map. Through the analysis of this morphological property, the head pose can be estimated. It is simple and fast algorithm in comparison with other algorithm which apply facial template, 2D, 3D models and optical flow method. Our system can automatically segment and estimate head pose in a wide range of head motion without manual initialization like other optical flow system. As the result of experiments, we obtained the reliable head orientation data under the real-time performance.

  • A computer presentation system by using hand-motion identification rules is proposed. To identify hand motions of a presenter, a face region is extracted first using haar classifier. A motion status(patterns) and position of hands is discriminated using the center of gravities of user's face and hand after segmenting the hand area on the YCbCr color model. User's hand is applied to the motion detection rules and then presentation control command is then executed. The proposed system utilizes the motion identification rules without the use of additional equipment and it is then capable of controlling the presentation and does not depend on the complexity of the background. The proposed algorithm confirmed the stable control operation via the presentation of the experiment in the dark illumination range of indoor atmosphere (lx) 15-20-30.

  • This paper proposes a method of tracking an object for a person-following mobile robot by combining a monocular camera and a laser scanner, where each sensor can supplement the weaknesses of the other sensor. For human-robot interaction, a mobile robot needs to maintain a distance between a moving person and itself. Maintaining distance consists of two parts: object tracking and person-following. Object tracking consists of particle filtering and online learning using shape features which are extracted from an image. A monocular camera easily fails to track a person due to a narrow field-of-view and influence of illumination changes, and has therefore been used together with a laser scanner. After constructing the geometric relation between the differently oriented sensors, the proposed method demonstrates its robustness in tracking and following a person with a success rate of 94.7% in indoor environments with varying lighting conditions and even when a moving object is located between the robot and the person.

  • This paper deals with the design and operation of a hybrid daylighting system that uses natural and artificial lighting to enhance visual comfort in buildings. The system was developed using an AVR micro controller for solar tracking in conjunction with dimming controls, which, acting together, enables the maximum use of natural daylight and also improves energy efficiency in buildings. Experimental results clearly demonstrates the usefulness of the present system capable of enhancing indoor lighting conditions when sufficient daylight is available and distributed appropriately in harmony with artificial lighting.

  • Currently, the energy consumption of electric lighting in an office building is accounted for more than 30% of the total energy consumption. In order to reduce the energy consumed by the indoor lighting, the daylight as a natural energy resource can play an important role in energy savings. The daylight can have positive impacts on improvement of work efficiency and productivity, and also make people feel more psychologically stable. Moreover, by using the daylight, we can definitely reduce the energy consumption in office buildings. Thus, the purpose of this study is to determine the LED dimming ratio depending on the ratio by calculating the amount of artificial illumination required according to the change of daylight by using the light simulation software that can quantify and visualize the performance of daylight. As a result, the energy savings could be obtained up to 30%.

  • Visible light communication (VLC) offers communication function in addition to illumination. Because the signal communication capacity per cable is 1,000 times compared to the power line communication (PLC), optical fiber is being advertised as the basis of the information and communication. Also dimming control of LED is an important component needed to provide energy savings and quality of life. This study configured multi-hop VLC system model in a building using optical fiber and analyzed the power performance of two of modulations using dimming techniques. The transmission power and received power were used to compare the power performance in multi-hop VLC environments.

  • This work has carried out some preliminary studies for the utilization of a solar mini-dish system capable of concentrating solar rays to higher densities. A typical mini-dish system considered employs an array of solar mini-dishes where major components are light and compact. It consists of small mini-dishes, optical fiber bundles and diffusers at the end. Each mini-dish (typically has a 20 to 30 cm in diameter) is designed with a simple parabolic profile, concentrating sunlight (after the glass glazing cover to avoid dust deposition on the reflector and facilitate cleaning) onto a centrally-located small mirror which is placed on the bottom side of the transparent glass cover. The focused sunlight is reflected by the mirror surface onto a focal point where the receiving aperture of a homogenizer is located. Optical fibers are used to carry high-density solar rays to the other end where diffusers are mounted for indoor illumination. The proposed high density mini-dish system could make an efficient daylighting system as it excludes large moving parts and expandable if necessary. Each component of the system could be made from the off-the-shelf technology and thus, make the generic unit inexpensive to manufacture. Depending on spatial demand or characteristics, the amount of introducing daylight could be controlled. Preliminary tests have been carried out for a trial system to check any functional problems when in operation. Suggestions are also made to improve the design enhancing its performance and applicability.
