  • Recently indoor air pollution caused by exposing hazardous chemicals (VOCs, formaldehyde) due to undiscriminated use of new construction materials and air-tightness to save energy is becoming a big issue. We have developed technologies to estimate the amounts of contaminants from constructions materials and method. We have further developed construction technologies to reduce and characterize these contaminants. The developed technologies were then refined to eliminate defects through considering field applicability.

  • In modem buildings, the concept of open-space plan gets more acceptance as it supports more flexibility for the internal space design. This open-space can be easily subdivided by internal partitioning to provide each individual working zone. Although the partitioning forms each physical working zone, its indoor environment could be different Iron what the occupants require. Especially the air movement and contaminant spread in each working zone could be blocked or distorted by the partitioning, which may produce unexpected change in ventilation performance designed. • People spend approximately 80 ~ 90 % of their time in various kinds of indoor spaces. And, in metropolitan area, most people spend more than 1 hour in public transportation everyday. For this reason, people's interest in the indoor air quality is drastically increasing. Among various indoor air pollutants, $CO_2$ is one of the most severe environmental concerns. Ventilation is commonly used to keep low $CO_2$ concentration in the passenger cabin. However, ventilation may worse the indoor air quality problem in case of subway because the tunnel is seriously polluted by particulate matters. In this study, an alternative way to remove $CO_2$ was suggested. The adsorption of $CO_2$ by $CO_2$ adsorbent was studied. Zeolite modified with base was prepared, and $CO_2$ removal performance was tested in $4m^3$ and $24m^3$ environmental chambers. It was found that $CO_2$ adsorbent could effectively remove $CO_2$ in the chambers.

  • Recently, indoor air pollution has been seriously apprehended, and became a striking issue, due to the airtightness of buildings or the misuse of building materials. Especially, SHS(Sick House Syndrome) and MCS(Multi Chemical Sensitivity) which can have bad influences on the resident in an existing apartment house as well as newly constructed apartment house start to attract public attention. The emission rates of VOCs is sensitively affected by the indoor/outdoor condition, construction materials, construction method, and character of ventilation facilities. Therefore, in this study, by measuring the indoor air pollution substance of the existing apartment house, the problem over this tends to be grasped and it is going to secure an improvement methods.

  • Purpose: The study is to measure concentrations of indoor air pollutants in housing and to analyze the characteristics of pollutants in housing indoor-air between summer and winter comparatively. The research result could be used as data for public health through indoor air quality management of existing housing and more as a reference for new housing. Method: It was investigated 24 middle class housings of metropolitan area in winter which have been built for the past 30 years. Concentration of HCHO, TVOC was investigated in living room at morning and night and concentration of $CO_2$ was investigated in living room and master bedroom at morning and night. SKT100-X5 was used for concentration of HCHO, TVOC and ZGm053UK for concentration of $CO_2$. The characteristics of HCHO, TVOC, $CO_2$ concentration in winter were analyzed and then the concentrations in winter were analyzed the concentrations in summer being preceding research comparatively. Result: Average concentration of TVOC in winter was 2.7 times more than that of TVOC in summer, average concentration of HCHO in winter was about 2.0 times more than that of HCHO in summer. Average concentration of $CO_2$ in the morning at living room in winter was 1.3 times more than that of $CO_2$ in summer. Average concentration of $CO_2$ in the morning at master bedroom in winter was 1.1 times more than that of $CO_2$ in summer. Average concentration of TVOC was 1.31 times more than that of HCHO and standard deviation of that was 1.73 times higher. Average concentration of $CO_2$ was almost nearly close or over to 1,000ppm being criteria of the Ministry of Environment.

  • The ventilation system is a key device to ensure both healthful indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort in buildings. The ventilation system should make the IAQ meet the standards such as ASHRAE 62. This study deals with a new approach to modeling the ventilation and IAQ requirement in residential buildings. In that approach, Elite software is used to calculate the air supply volume, and CONTAM model as a multi-zone and contaminant dispersal model is employed to estimate the contaminants' concentrations. Amongst various contaminants existing in the residential buildings, two main contaminates of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and carbon monoxide (CO) were considered. CO and $CO_2$ are generated mainly from combustion sources such as gas cooking and heating oven. In addition to the mentioned sources, $CO_2$ is generated from occupants' respirations. To show how that approach works, a sample house with the area of $80m^2$ located in Tehran was considered as an illustrative case study. The results showed that $CO_2$ concentration in the winter was higher than the acceptable level. Therefore, the air change rate (ACH) of 4.2 was required to lower the $CO_2$ concentration below the air quality threshold in the living room, and in the bedrooms, the rate of ventilation volume should be 11.2 ACH.
