Wi-Fi Access Point (AP) optimization approaches are used in indoor positioning systems for signal coverage enhancement, as well as positioning precision improvement. Although the huge power consumption of the AP optimization forms a serious problem due to the signal coverage requirement for large-scale indoor environment, the conventional approaches treat the problem of power consumption independent from the design of indoor positioning systems. This paper proposes a new Fast Water-filling algorithm Group Power Constraint (FWA-GPC) based Wi-Fi AP optimization approach for indoor positioning in which the power consumed by the AP optimization is significantly considered. This paper has three contributions. First, it is not restricted to conventional concept of one AP for one candidate AP location, but considered spare APs once the active APs break off. Second, it utilizes the concept of water-filling model from adaptive channel power allocation to calculate the number of APs for each candidate AP location by maximizing the location fingerprint discrimination. Third, it uses a fast version, namely Fast Water-filling algorithm, to search for the optimal solution efficiently. The experimental results conducted in two typical indoor Wi-Fi environments prove that the proposed FWA-GPC performs better than the conventional AP optimization approaches.

This paper presents an AP placement technique considering indoor location-awareness and examines its performance. The proposed AP placement technique is addressed from three performance metrics: location-awareness and AP-based wireless network performance as well as its cost. The proposed AP placement technique consists of meta-heuristic algorithms that yield a near optimal AP configuration for given performance metrics, and deterministic algorithms that improve the fast convergence of the near optimal AP configuration. The performance of the AP placement technique presented in this paper is measured under the environments simulating indoor space, and numerical results obtained by experimental evaluation yield the fast convergence of a near-optimal solution to a given performance metric.

With the development of mobile internet, requirements of positioning accuracy for the LBS (Location Based Service) are becoming more and more higher. The LBS is based on the position of each mobile device. So, it requires a proper acquisition of accurate user's indoor position. Thus indoor positioning technology and its accuracy is crucial for various LBS. In general, RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) measurements are used to obtain the position information of mobile unit under WLAN environment. However, indoor positioning error increases as multiple AP's configurations are becoming more complex. To overcome this problem, an enhanced indoor localization method by AP (Access Point) selection criteria adopting DOP (Dilution of Precision) is proposed.

Recently, an IoT(Internet of Things) application communication protocol is standardizing for connectivity between every things on Internet. In this paper, we design and implement an indoor resource control service using IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol) based on Web. We present an indoor resource control architecture based on Web included functionalities of proxy and RD (Resource Directory) in a web server. Developed indoor resource control service supports to register low-powered and small-scale IoT nodes to web server using CoAP. This service allows users to control the indoor resources through a web browser using Web proxy with functionality of HTTP-CoAP converting.
The demand for LBS (Location Based Services) is increasing in the development of communication and mobile technologies. Positioning technology is a core technology for LBS, because LBS is based on a position of each device or user. But positioning technology especially for indoor environments is getting a lot of attention. Indoor positioning errors usually occur seriously in indoor environments where APs (Access Points) are set in a very concentrated and complex arrangement. In order to reduce indoor positioning errors, we adopt DOP (Dilution of Precision) which reflects an APs configuration information. In this paper, we propose an enhanced indoor positioning method using IEEE 802.11 RSSI measurements and AP configuration information.

Recently, deploying WiFi access points (APs) for facilitating indoor localization has attracted increasing attention. However, most existing mechanisms in this aspect are typically simulation based and further they did not consider how to jointly utilize pre-existing APs in target environment and newly deployed APs for achieving high localization performance. In this paper, we propose a measurement-based AP deployment mechanism (MAPD) for placing APs in target indoor environment for assisting fingerprint based indoor localization. In the mechanism design, MAPD takes full consideration of pre-existing APs to assist the selection of good candidate positions for deploying new APs. For this purpose, we first choose a number of candidate positions with low location accuracy on a radio map calibrated using the pre-existing APs and then use over-deployment and on-site measurement to determine the actual positions for AP deployment. MAPD uses minimal mean location error and progressive greedy search for actual AP position selection. Experimental results demonstrate that MAPD can largely reduce the localization error as compared with existing work.
In an indoor localization method taking the lateration-based approach, the distance between a target and an AP (Anchor Point) is estimated using RSS (Received Signal Strength) measurements. Since the characteristics of a radio signal randomly vary in time and space, errors are unavoidable in distance estimation with measured RSS. Since the accuracy of distance estimation affects the localization accuracy of a lateration-based method, additional APs hearing a target have been used for localization in the literature. However, lots of experimental results show that the accuracy of a lateration-based method is improved by using carefully selected APs measuring the high quality RSSs which the distances estimated is close to the actual distances between nodes as reference APs, not using merely more APs. In this paper, we focus on selection method of reference AP and distance estimation method reflecting on environmental dynamics. We validate our method by implementing an indoor localization system and evaluating the accuracy of our method in the various experimental environments.

Recently, an RSSI-based fingerprinting localization technology has been widely used in indoor location-based services. In the conventional fingerprinting method, as many APs as possible are used to increase the accuracy of location estimation. In another study, a part of APs having the strongest RSSI signal intensity are selected and used to reduce the time spent for positioning. However, it does not reflect the influence of RSSI occurred from the changes of the surrounding environments such as human movement or moving obstacles in a real environment. The environmental changes may cause the difference between the predicted RSSI signal strength value and the measured value, and thus occur an unpredictable error in the position estimation. Therefore, in order to mitigate the error caused by environmental factors, it is necessary to select APs suitable for indoor positioning estimation considering the changes in the surrounding environments. In this paper, we propose a method to select stable APs considering the influence of surrounding environments and derive a suitable positioning algorithm. In addition, we compare and analyze the performance of the proposed method with that of the existing AP selection methods through experiments.

In this paper, we propose an indoor positioning technique using the landmark based on relative Access Point (AP) signal strengths. The absolute values of AP signals are used to conventional indoor positioning technologies, but they may be different because of the difference of the measuring device, the measuring environment, and the timing of the measurements. However, we found the fact that the flow of the AP's RSSI in certain places shows almost constant patterns. Based on theses characteristics, we identify the relative strength between the APs and store the certain places as landmarks where they show certain patterns. Once the deployment of the landmark map is complete, system calculate position of user using the IMU sensor of smartphone and calibrate it with stored landmarks. Our system shows 75.2% improvement over technology that used only sensors, and 39.6% improvement over technology that used landmarks that were selected with absolute values.

In this paper, we propose a new indoor location estimation method which combines the fingerprint technique with the propagation prediction model. The wireless LAN (WLAN) access points (APs) deployed indoors are divided into public APs and private APs. While the fingerprint method can be easily used to public APs usually installed in fixed location, it is difficult to apply the fingerprint scheme to private APs whose location can be freely changed. In the proposed approach, the accuracy of user location estimation is improved by simultaneously utilizing public and private APs. Specifically, the fingerprint method is used to the received signals from public APs and the propagation prediction model is employed to the signals from private APs. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of conventional indoor location estimation schemes through measurements and numerical simulations in WLAN environments.
