Scanning electron microscopy / energy dispersive X-ray analyzer(SEM/EDX) has played an important role for evaluation the source of atmospheric particle because it is a powerful tool for characterizing individual particles. The SEM/EDX system provides various physical parameters like optical diameter, as well as chemical information for a particle-by-particle basis. The purpose of the study was to classify individual particle emitted from the point sources based on clustering analysis and physico-chemical analysis by SEM/EDX. The total of 490 individual particle were analyzed at 8 point sources including coal-fired power plant, incinerator, H-C oil boiler, and metal manufacturing industry. The main components were Si and AI in the coal-fired power plant, Cl and Na in the domestic waste Incinerator, S in the H-C oil boiler and S and Fe in the metal manufactory industry, respectively.
The flame image processing and it's analysis system has been developed for optimal coal firing of thermal power plant, especially for reducing NOx and safe operations. We aimed at gaining the relationship between burner flame image, emissions of NOx and LOI(Loss on ignition) in furnace by utilizing the flame image processing methods. And the relationship determines quantitatively the conditions of combustion on the individual burners. The test was conducted on Samchonpo thermal power plant #4 unit(560MW) of KOSEP which has 24 burners. The system simplified the burner adjustment works in accordance with the real time trending of flame behavior like NOx profiles and unburned carbon profiles for individual burners. But, This kind of conventional method increases the cost as the number of burner are increased. Also there is a difficulty to measure exhausted gas of each burner because of measurement errors. This paper intends to propose the useful "Flame Monitoring System" that can find Low NOX and LOI at the upper furnace and to compare with the conventional System.
Comparison study on the radiological effects by radionuclides from hypothetical 1,000MWe coal-fired power station and nuclear power plant is made. This paper describes the radiological effects only for gaseous effluents released in normal operation. Source terms for coal-fired Power station are quoted from foreign data and those for nuclear power plant are calculated for reference power plant. Gaussian plume model is used to assess atmospheric dispersion of radioactive effluents based on one year meteorological data of Kori site and individual doses are calculated at the maximum X/Q point. Doses from nuclear power plant are slightly more than those from coal-fred power plant. In the case of coal-fired power plant, doses by ingestion of contaminated vegetation are 73.5% of total doses.
Maximum power consumption was up to 6,228kW in the summer of 2007 due to steady development of industry as well as increased demand of individual. Twenty fossil-Fired Thermal Power Plant for 500MW were underconstructed at present. KEPRI(Korea Electric Power Research Institute) manage 'Development of Advanced Fossil-Fired Thermal Power Generation System' project to construct high efficient power plant of 1000MW capacity for preparing increased demand of power. Design of control logic and data sampling were explained and high efficient control logic was simulated in detail in 'The Development of Next Generation Power Plant Instrument and Control System'(sub-project of 'Development of Advanced Fossil-Fired Thermal Power Generation System' project).

In a power plant, disturbance detection and diagnosis are massive and complex problems. Once a disturbance occurs, it can be either persistent, self cleared, cleared by the automatic controllers or propagated into another disturbance until it subsides in a new equilibrium or a stable state. In addition to the Physical complexity of the power plant structure itself, these dynamic behaviors of the disturbances further complicate the fault monitoring and diagnosis tasks. A data structure called a disturbance interrelation analysis graph(DIAG) is proposed in this paper, trying to capture, organize and better utilize the vast and interrelated knowledge required for power plant disturbance detection and diagnosis. The DIAG is a multi-layer directed AND/OR graph composed of 4 layers. Each layer includes vertices that represent components, disturbances, conditions and sensors respectively With the implementation of the DIAG, disturbances and their relationships can be conveniently represented and traced with modularized operations. All the cascaded disturbances following an initial triggering disturbance can be diagnosed in the context of that initial disturbance instead of diagnosing each of them as an individual disturbance. DIAG is applied to a typical cooling water system of a thermal power plant and its effectiveness is also demonstrated.

In the dismantling process of a reactor coolant system (RCS) piping, a radiation protection plan should be established to minimize the radiation exposure doses of dismantling workers. Hence, it is necessary to estimate the individual effective dose in the RCS piping dismantling process when decommissioning a nuclear power plant. In this study, the radiation exposure doses of the dismantling workers at different positions was estimated using the MicroShield dose assessment program based on the NUREG/CR-1595 report. The individual effective dose, which is the sum of the effective dose to each tissue considering the working time, was used to estimate the radiation exposure dose. The estimations of the simulation results for all RCS piping dismantling tasks satisfied the dose limits prescribed by the ICRP-60 report. In dismantling the RCS piping of the Kori-1 or Wolsong-1 units in South Korea, the estimation and reduction method for the radiation exposure dose, and the simulated results of this study can be used to implement the radiation safety for optimal dismantling by providing information on the radiation exposure doses of the dismantling workers.
A total of 77 unanticipated trip cases induced by human errors in Korean nuclear power plants were collected from the nuclear power plant trip event reports and analyzed to investigate the areas of high priority for human error reduction. Prior to this analysis, a classification system was made on the four task-related categories including plant systems, work situations, task types, and error types. The erroneous actions affecting the unanticipated plant trips were indentified by reviewing carefully the description of trip events. Then, the events with erroneous action were analyzed by using the classification system. Based on the results for the individual cases, human error occurrences were counted for each of the four categories, also for the selected pairs of categories, to find out the relationships between the two categories in aspects of human errors. As a result, the plant systems, work situations, and task types, and error types which are dominant in human error occurrences were identified.
Concerns over reliability assessments of the main components in nuclear power plants (NPPs) related to aging and continuous operation have increased. The conventional reliability assessment for main components uses experimental correlations under general conditions. Most NPPs have been operating in Korea for a long time, and it is predictable that NPPs operating for the same number of years would show varying extent of aging and degradation. The conventional reliability assessment does not adequately reflect the characteristics of an individual plant. Therefore, the reliability of individual components and an individual plant was estimated according to operating data and conditions. It is essential to reflect aging as a characteristic of individual NPPs, and this is performed through prognostics. To handle this difficulty, in this paper, the general path model/Bayes, a data-based prognostic method, was used to update the reliability estimated from the generic database. As a case study, the authors consider the aging for steam generator tubes in NPPs and demonstrate the suggested methodology with data obtained from the probabilistic algorithm for the steam generator tube assessment program.

Nuclear power plant (NPP) is currently considered as one of the most reliable power sources. However, 182 of them are considered decommissioned and inactive including the one in Bataan, Philippines. The aim of this study was to investigate the acceptance of the reopening of Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) by integrating the Theory of Planned Behavior and Protection Motivation Theory. A total of 815 Filipinos answered an online questionnaire which consisted of 37 questions. The Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) indicated that knowledge towards nuclear power plants was the key factor in determining people's acceptance towards NPP reopening. In addition, knowing the benefits would lead to positive perceived behavioral control (PBC) and attitude towards intention. Results showed that PBC and attitude are mediators towards the acceptance of people regarding the reopening of BNPP. If an individual's knowledge gravitates towards the perceived risk, then this can lead to the negative acceptance of the NPP reopening. On the other hand, if an individual's knowledge gravitates towards the perceived benefits, then this will lead to positive acceptance. This study is the first study that explored the acceptance of the reopening BNPP. Finally, the study's model construct would also be very beneficial for researchers, government, and even private sectors worldwide.
Heliostat sun tracking accuracy could be the most important requirement in solar thermal power plant, since it determines the overall efficiency of power plant. This study presents the effect of geometrical errors on the heliostat sun tracking performance. The geometrical errors considered here are the mirror canting error, encoder reference error, heliostat position error. pivot offset and tilt error, gear backlash and mass unbalanced effect error. We first investigate the effect of each individual geometrical error on the sun tracking accuracy. Then, the sun tracking error caused by the combination of individual geometrical error is computed and analyzed. The results obtained using the solar ray tracing technique shows that the sun tracking error due to the geometrical error is varying almost randomly. It also shows that the mirror canting error is the most significant error source, while the encoder reference error and gear backlash are second and the third dominant source of errors.
