A Performance Comparison of Extended and Unscented Kalman Filters for INS/GPS Tightly Coupled Approach (INS/GPS 강결합 기법에 대한 EKF 와 UKF의 성능 비교)

  • This paper deals with INS/GPS tightly coupled integration algorithms using extend Kalman filter (EKF) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF). In the tightly coupled approach, nonlinear pseudorange measurement models are used for the INS/GPS integration Kalman filter. Usually, an EKF is applied for this task, but it may diverge due to poor functional linearization of the nonlinear measurement. The UKF approximates a distribution about the mean using a set of calculated sigma points and achieves an accurate approximation to at least second-order. We introduce the generalized scaled unscented transformation which modifies the sigma points themselves rather than the nonlinear transformation. The generalized scaled method is used to transform the pseudo range measurement of the tightly coupled approach. To compare the performance of the EKF- and UKF-based tightly coupled approach, real van test and simulation have been carried out with feedforward and feedback indirect Kalman filter forms. The results show that the UKF and EKF have an identical performance in case of the feedback filter form, but the superiority of the UKF is demonstrated in case of the feedforward filer form.

Model-based Gain Scheduling Strategy for Air-to-fuel Ratio Control Algorithm of Passenger Car Diesel Engines (승용디젤엔진의 공연비 제어 알고리즘을 위한 모델기반 게인 스케줄링 전략에 대한 연구)

  • This study presents a model-based gain scheduling strategy for PI-based EGR controllers. The air-to-fuel ratio is used as an indirect measurement of the EGR rate. In order to cope with the nonlinearity and parameter varying characteristics of the EGR system, we proposed a static gain model of the EGR system using a new scheduling parameter. With the 810 steady-state measurements, the static gain model achieved 0.94 of R-squared value. Based on the static gain of the EGR system, the PI gains were robustly designed using quantitative feedback theory. Consequently, the gains of the PI controller are scheduled according to the static gain parameter of the EGR path in runtime. The proposed model-based gain scheduling strategy was validated through various operating conditions of engine experiments such as setpoint step responses and disturbance rejections.

New virtual orthodontic treatment system for indirect bonding using the stereolithographic technique

  • The purpose of this article is to introduce a new virtual orthodontic treatment (VOT) system, which can be used to construct three-dimensional (3D) virtual models, establish a 3D virtual setup, enable the placement of the virtual brackets at the predetermined position, and fabricate the transfer jig with a customized bracket base for indirect bonding (IDB) using the stereolithographic technique. A 26-year-old woman presented with anterior openbite, crowding in the upper and lower arches, and narrow and tapered upper arch, despite having an acceptable profile and balanced facial proportion. The treatment plan was rapid palatal expansion (RPE) without extraction. After 10 days of RPE, sufficient space was obtained for decrowding. After a 10-week retention period, accurate pretreatment plaster models were obtained using silicone rubber impression. IDB was performed according to the protocol of the VOT system. Crowding of the upper and lower arches was effectively resolved, and anterior openbite was corrected to normal overbite. Superimposition of the 3D virtual setup models (3D-VSM) and post-treatment 3D virtual models showed that the latter deviated only slightly from the former. Thus, the use of the VOT system helped obtain an acceptable outcome in this case of mild crowding treated without extraction. More cases should be treated using this system, and the pre- and post-treatment virtual models should be compared to obtain feedback regarding the procedure; this will support doctors and dental laboratory technicians during the learning curve.

Indirect Cutting Force Measurement by Using Servodrive Current Sensing and it's Application to Monitoring and Control of Machining Process (이송모터 전류 감지를 통한 절삭력의 간접측정과 절삭공정 감시 및 제어에의 응용)

  • This paper presents an indirect cutting force measuring system, which uses the current signals from the AC servo drive units of the horizontal machining center, with its applications to the adaptive regulation of the cutting forces in various milling processes and to the on-line monitoring of tool breakage. A typical model for the feed-drive control system of a horizontal machining center is developed to analyze cutting force measurement from the drive motor. The pulsating milling forces can be measured indirectly within the bandwidth of the current feedback control loop of the feed-drive system. It is shown that the indirectly measured cutting force signals can be used in the adaptive controller for cutting force regulation. The whole scheme has been embedded in the commercial machining center and a series of cutting experiments on the face cutting processes are performed. The adaptive controller reveals reliable cutting force regulating capability against the various cutting conditions. It is also shown that the tool breakage in milling can be detected within one spindle revolution by adaptively filtering the current signals. The effect of the cutter run-out has been considered for the reliable on-line detection of tool breakage.

  • Digital radiographic systems allow the implementation of a fully digital picture archiving and communication system (PACS), and provide the greater dynamic range of digital detectors with possible reduction of X-ray exposure to the patient. This article reviewed the basic physical principles of digital radiographic imaging system in dental clinics generally. Digital radiography can be divided into computed radiography (CR) and direct radiography (DR). CR systems acquire digital images using phosphor storage plates (PSP) with a separate image readout process. On the other hand, DR systems convert X-rays into electrical charges by means of a direct readout process. DR systems can be further divided into direct and indirect conversion systems depending on the type of X-ray conversion. While a direct conversion requires a photoconductor that converts X-ray photons into electrical charges directly, in an indirect conversion, lightsensitive sensors such as CCD or a flat-panel detector convert visible light, proportional to the incident X-ray energy by a scintillator, into electrical charges. Indirect conversion sensors using CCD or CMOS without lens-coupling are used in intraoral radiography. CR system using PSP is mainly used in extraoral radiographic system and a linear array CCD or CR sensors, in panoramic system. Currently, the digital radiographic system is an important subject in the dental field. Most studies reported that no significant difference in diagnostic performance was found between the digital and conventional systems. To accept advances in technology and utilize benefits provided by the systems, the continuous feedback between doctors and manufacturers is essential.

INS/Vision Integrated Navigation System Considering Error Characteristics of Landmark-Based Vision Navigation (랜드마크 기반 비전항법의 오차특성을 고려한 INS/비전 통합 항법시스템)

  • The paper investigates the geometric effect of landmarks to the navigation error in the landmark based 3D vision navigation and introduces the INS/Vision integrated navigation system considering its effect. The integrated system uses the vision navigation results taking into account the dilution of precision for landmark geometry. Also, the integrated system helps the vision navigation to consider it. An indirect filter with feedback structure is designed, in which the position and the attitude errors are measurements of the filter. Performance of the integrated system is evaluated through the computer simulations. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm works well and that better performance can be expected when the error characteristics of vision navigation are considered.

  • We propose and analyze a robust adaptive fuzzy controller for nonlinear systems without a priori knowledge of the sign of the input gain function. No assumptions are made about the type of nonlinearities of the system, except that such nonlinearities are smooth. The uncertain nonlinearities are captured by the fuzzy systems that have been proven to be universal approximators. The proposed control scheme completely overcomes the singularity problem that occurs in the indirect adaptive feedback linearizing control. Projection in the estimated parameters and switching in the control input are both not required. The stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed in the Lyapunov viewpoint.

  • When the low cost IMU is used, the result of the stationary self alignment is not suitable for navigation. In this paper, an in-motion alignment method is proposed to obtain an accurate initial attitude of a low cost IMU based GPS/INS integration system. To design Kalman filter for alignment, large heading error model is introduced. And then Kalman filter is designed to estimate initial attitude error as the indirect feedback filter. In order to assess performance of the alignment method, computer simulations are carried out. The simulation results show that initial attitude error rapidly reduces.

  • In this paper, the design of the in-motion alignment system of Strapdown Inertial Navigation System(SDINS) using Robust Extended Kalman Filter(REKF) is presented. The compensation of errors in the aided navigation system is accomplished by the indirect feedback filtering. The performance of the aided navigation algorithm is very sensitive to the accuracy of the initial estimate, which is the characteristic of the EKF. Unfortunately, the initial attitude error can be very large during the in-motion alignment.   • The purpose of this paper is to design a DVL-RPM based VKF (Velocity Kalman Filter) design for a performance improvement underwater integrated navigation system. The proposed approach relies on a VKF, augmented by a altitude from Echo-sounder based switching architecture to yield robust performance, even when DVL (Doppler Velocity Log) exceeds the measurement range and the measured value is unable to be valid. The proposed approach relies on two parts: 1) Indirect feedback navigation Kalman filter design, 2) VKF design. To evaluate proposed method, we compare the results of the VKF aided navigation system with simulation result from a PINS (Pure Inertial Navigation System) and conventional INS-DVL method. Simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the underwater navigation system assisted by the additional DVL-RPM based VKF in underwater environment.
