  • Background: Happiness is one of the most important indicators of health, wellbeing, and quality of life among older adults. The objective of the study was to investigate factors associated with happiness among senior citizens residing in rural areas using the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 3,149 senior citizens living in rural areas using secondary data from the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans. Happiness was measured by a single question and responses were recorded dichotomously. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed at a 5% level of significance. Results: In all, 64.5% of the participants considered themselves as happy most of the time in the last 1 week. In the study, socio-demographic factors did not predict happiness except age. Satisfaction with a health status, financial situation, relationship with children, cultural satisfaction, and satisfaction with friends and society were positively associated with happiness among senior citizens residing in rural areas of Korea. Odds of reporting happiness were higher among those who traveled in the last 1 year, visited elderly welfare centers, and were involved in voluntary work than among those who did not. Conclusion: Happiness among senior citizen was significantly associated with life satisfaction with regard to health, finance, relationship with family, friends and society, and social activity participation.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the Activation of Public Transportation by Analysis of Factors Influencing Satisfaction of Commuting Hours in the Metropolitan Area. Method: This study analyzed the factors affecting wide-area commuting time and satisfaction for office workers who perform wide-area commuting. Result: in the case of commuting satisfaction for wide-area commuting hours by region, commuting time satisfaction was relatively low in the metropolitan area as the average commuting time was high, and commuting time satisfaction was relatively high in the non-metropolitan area as the average commuting time was low. Conclusion: In the future, the government will establish or improve express railways and wide-area buses to reduce wide-area commuting time, and build urban highways to shorten passenger car use time, which will reduce commuting time, but qualitative indicators are more important. In other words, even if commuting time is long, life satisfaction increases, so quality of life is important, and it is necessary to improve commuting time satisfaction rather than simple indicators of commuting time, so both qualitative and quantitative aspects of commuting time need to be improved.

Five hundred people from the inhabitants of Young-Do ward who is living in Young-Do district were separated by using the random sampling method as the subject of the study. The investigation took effect from October to November of 2010 and an investigator visited the inhabitants of a ward with structured questionnaire. An investigator had one-on-one talk with inhabitants of Young-Do ward while the investigation and I also collected the data through self-administered questionnaire as well. I found the physical elements influence in the health much more than the outside factors from the study. Higher satisfaction of their career, relationship between friends and co-workers, work environment and married life reflects the fact that higher self-contentment means high quality health level.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the nationwide general characteristics and housing environments of agricultural households and the differences of them by Eup-Myun Areas. The data were subsample of the 2008 survey on the rural living indicators collected by the rural development administration. Only agricultural households, 73.7% of the original nationwide data (1,461 households out of 1,983) sampled by multi-stage stratified clustering methods and face to face interview in Aug. 2008, were selected and the cross-tabulation(X2) was mainly used to find the difference by Eup Myun areas through spss 12.0 for window. The results showed that the general characteristics of agricultural households such as head of household, family, and economic characteristics were mainly differed by Eup Myun Areas. Agricultural households in Eup area were more likely low in the general characteristics than were those in Myun area. Housing environments were less likely than the general characteristics differed by Eup Myun areas. Improvements of drinking water system, housing alteration, oder, and garbage system were needed to increase the satisfaction with residential environments of agricultural households. This study suggests the use of annual survey on the rural living indicators data would be applicable to various research subjects of home economics.

  • Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability and the third leading cause of adult death in the world. Stroke has an impact on the physical, psychological and social dimensions of quality of life. An increasing number of authors have reported a deterioration of the quality of life in a large proportion of patients after a stroke. Just as satisfaction with each dimension varies to everyone, the importance of each dimension also varies and does not impact equally on the quality of life. So assessment on the quality of life has to adopt a multidimentional approach and to make use of the subjective and objective indicators.

  • This study is designed to examine the relationship between the social safety net and the 'satisfaction level of safety life' conducted by local governments and to examine the effects of anarchy on the indicators. To do this, 300 people were sampled using the random sample method in the metropolitan area using the population of residents in the metropolitan area in 2017, and a total of 276 copies were extracted except 24 copies in the final analysis. Regression analysis and path analysis were conducted through structural equation modeling. Bootstrapping was performed to investigate the significance of the mediator effect. In summary, 'CPTED' has a positive effect on 'disorder' and 'safety life satisfaction', but 'municipal safety education' has a positive effect on 'safety life satisfaction' Respectively. 'Local disorder' has a negative effect on 'safety life satisfaction'. As a result of path analysis, the same effect was found. In order to examine mediating effect, bootstrapping showed that regional disorder was mediated only in 'CPTED' and 'safety life'. This result suggests that there is a need for change in the safety education of the community and it supports the precedent study that it is an effective means of safety net for the safety life of the CPTED community in the community. It is one of the nation's most important policies to prepare measures for the safety of the people. The local governments should also ensure the safety of local residents. In this study, the relationship between the local safety net and the disorder and safety life satisfaction was investigated.

  • Objective : This study examined the socioeconomic differentials for the health and health related behaviors among South Korean middle school students. Methods : A nationwide cross-sectional interview survey of 3,449 middle school second-grade students and their parents was conducted using a stratified multi-stage cluster sampling method. The response rate was 93.3%. The socioeconomic position indicators were based on self-reported information from the students and their parents: parental education, father's occupational class, monthly family income, out-of-pocket expenditure for education, housing ownership, educational expectations, educational performance and the perceived economic hardships. The outcome variables that were measured were also based on the self-reported information from the students. The health measures included self-rated health conditions, psychological or mental problems, the feelings of loneliness at school, the overall satisfaction of life and the perceived level of stress. The health related behaviors included were smoking, alcohol drinking, sexual intercourse, violence, bullying and verbal and physical abuse by parents. Results : Socioeconomic differences for the health and health related behaviors were found among the eighth grade boys and girls of South Korea. However, the pattern varied with gender, the socioeconomic position indicators and the outcome measures. The prevalence rates of the overall dissatisfaction with life for both genders differed according to most of the eight socioeconomic position indicators. All the health measures were significantly different according to the perceived economic hardship. However, the socioeconomic differences in the self-rated health conditions and the psychosocial or mental problems were not clear. The students having higher socioeconomic position tended to be a perpetrator of bullying while those students with lower socioeconomic position were more likely to be a victim. Conclusions : The perceived economic hardships predicted the health status among the eighth graders of South Korea. The overall satisfaction of life was associated with the socioeconomic position indicators. Further research efforts are needed to explore the mechanisms on how and why the socioeconomic position affects the health and health related behaviors in this age group.
