  • In this paper, the gamma ray irradiation test results of the CCD cameras are described. From the low dose-rate (2.11 Gy/h) to the high dose-rate (150 Gy/h) level, which is the same level when the hydrogen explosion was occurred in the 1~3 reactor unit of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the monitoring performance of the cameras owing to the speckles are evaluated. The numbers of speckles, generated by gamma ray irradiation, in the image of cameras are calculated by image processing technique. And the legibility of the sensor indicator (dosimeter) owing to the numbers of the speckles is presented.

  • Sciaphila secundiflora occurs on Jeju Island as a second species of the genus Sciaphila in Korea. This is an important finding in relation to the flora of Korea, as species of the genus Sciaphila are concentrated mainly in Indonesia and Malaysia. Few species are found on the mainland of Asia, in Japan, Taiwan, China (Hainan), tropical Africa, Australia, and on the Pacific islands. In this paper, the species S. secundiflora is described and illustrated as a new record from Korea. In addition, we suggest that the species of the genus Sciaphila should be protected with regard to its habitat characteristics and for its phytogeographic and climatic significance.

  • During the period of 1975-76, a survey was carried out to find out zinc indicators in the natural vegetation in Korea. The symptoms fo chlorosis were observed in flowering plants in the areas of zinc outcrop of Wolgok-A, Seokgok-9, and Sowolgok. Although 28 species were found to be chlorotic, the total quantity of chlorotic foliage observed was small. Reasons for chlorosis in the areas of zinc are deposits is considered as effects of zinc, lead, copper and calcium ions. Sedum sp. and Dianthus sinensis were confined to soil containing more than exchangeable zinc of 30 ppm and to accumulation in the plants contained at least 1,300-14,000 ppm of zinc. Therefore Sedum sp. and Dianthus sinensis might be used as zinc indicators in Korea.

  • Autophagy contributes to enhancing the immune system (innate and adaptive immune system) against foreign pathogens. Autophagy of macrophages is used as a major indicator for developing vaccine adjuvants to increase the adaptive immune response. In this study, RAL increased the production of immunostimulatory mediators and phagocytotic activity in RAW264.7 cells. RAL increased p62/SQSTM1 expression. Inhibition of TLR4, JNK, and PI3K/AKT blocked RAL-mediated increase of p62/SQSTM1. RAL activated JNK and PI3K/AKT signaling. RAL-mediated activation of JNK and PI3K/AKT signaling was reversed by TLR4 inhibition. Taken together, it is believed that RAL-mediated autophagy may be dependent on activating via TLR4-dependent activation of JNK and PI3K/AKT signaling in macrophages.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the flora of Baengnyeongdo (Isl.). The vascular plants which were collected in 5 times (from Aug. 2011 and Nov. 2012) were identified as 732 taxa in total, including 124 families, 411 genera, 647 species, 8 subspecies, 68 varieties, 7 forms and 2 hybrids. 193 of these taxa were first records for the region. In the flora of this area, the endangered plants designated and protected by the wildlife protection law, the Ministry of Environment, Korea were counted to two taxa. Korean endemics plants numbered 8 taxa, and 78 taxa of specially designated floristic regional indicator plants by the Ministry of Environment. And rare plants were identified as 20 taxa. Based on the list of southern and northern limit of distribution plants, 30 taxa and 43 taxa of halophytes were recorded in the investigated area. The naturalized plants were identified as 92 taxa, and their naturalization ratio were found to be 12.5%, respectively.

  • A new strain of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) from easter lily (Lilium longiflorum), Ly2-CMV, was identified and compared to the well-characterized Mf-CMV (subgroupⅠ) and LS-CMV (subgroupⅡ) by host reaction in several indicator plants, dsRNA analysis, serological property, RT-PCR analysis, restriction enzyme profile of the PCR products and nucleotide sequence of coat protein (CP) gene. Remarkable differences in symptoms of Ly2-CMV were found between Mf-CMV or LS-CMV in tobacco plants and Datura stramoinium. Ly2-CMV induced small necrotic ringspots on the inoculated leaves of Nicotiana tabacum cvs. Xanthi nc and Burley 21 and D. stramonium, and failed to infect these species systemically. Of the indicator plants tested, N. benthamiana only reacted with systemic infection by inoculation of Lr2-CMV. In experiments of dsRNA analysis, serology and RT-PCR of CP gene, Ly2-CMV was come within subgroupⅠ CMV. However, restriction enzyme analysis of the PCR products using MspⅠ showed that Ly2-CMV was distinct to Mf-CMV. The CP gene of Ly2-CMV contains 657 nucleotides, and the nucleotide sequence is similar to that of Mf-CMV. There is also a high degree of conservation between their putative gene products in Ly2-CMV and Mf-CMV, with five amino acid changes in the 218 amino acids of the CPs.

  • We use a variety of methods to determine the optimum time for havesting corn for silage. In addition, adequate dry matter for silage must be considered along with maturity stage. The objective of this study was to evaluate using the kernel milk line to determine when to harvest com for silage in 1992 on the Livestock Experimental F m , Keiymung Junior College at Keongsan, Keongsangbukdo. Four hybrids were field grown and com plants were harvested at various stages of kernel development so that kemel milk line movement could be analyzed whilc the corn was in the premature stages. As the plants approached maturity, the ears were collected from each of the hybrids and the position of the milk line wa5 noted. Then the whole plants were chopped and the content of DM was determined. The milk line was a readily identifiable feature of maturing com kemels. We focused on the five development \tage\. The fint was "soft dough". The second was "dent". The third wa, "75% milk". and the fourth wa5 "half milk". The half milk occurs when the milk line is positioned falf way down the kemel face. and the final stages win "no milk", milk disappearance as indicators of physiological maturity in maix. Milk free stage of the kemel occurred from I to 3 days prior to black layer having developed. The range for harvesting com for silage occurs a kemels mature from 75% milk to no milk. Position of milk line was easy to see. and can be used as a visible indicator to determine com matunty stage\ and whole plant dry matter. Whole plant dry matter increased with advancing maturity. averaged over hybrids it was 24.1, 25.6. 28.5. 34.6 and 39.0% at soft dough, dent, 75% milk. half milk and no milk. Milk line was more usehl indicator in monitoring corn maturity prior to physiological maturity.ing corn maturity prior to physiological maturity.

  • The infectious full-length cDNA clones of Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) isolates KW and KOM, which were isolated from watermelon and oriental melon, respectively, were constructed under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter. We successfully inoculated Nicotiana benthamiana with the cloned CGMMV isolates KW and KOM by Agrobacterium-mediated infiltration. Virulence and symptomatic characteristics of the cloned CGMMV isolates KW and KOM were tested on several indicator plants. No obvious differences between two cloned isolates in disease development were observed on the tested indicator plants. We also determined full genome sequences of the cloned CGMMV isolates KW and KOM. Sequence comparison revealed that only four amino acids (at positions 228, 699, 1212, and 1238 of the replicase protein region) differ between the cloned isolates KW and KOM. A previous study reported that the isolate KOM could not infect Chenopodium amaranticolor, but the cloned KOM induced chlorotic spots on the inoculated leaves. When compared with the previously reported sequence of the original KOM isolate, the cloned KOM contained one amino acid mutation (Ala to Thr) at position 228 of the replicase protein, suggesting that this mutation might be responsible for induction of chlorotic spots on the inoculated leaves of C. amaranticolor.
