  • The primary objective of this research was to establish and quantify the relationship between the physical degradation factors of multimedia telecommunications (teleconferencing) system and Subjective human perception. The research was performed in two stages. A field survey of the real users and pilot experiments were carried out in the first stage to determine customers' major complaints and corresponding system degradation factors. A prototype teleconferencing simulator was developed in two separate sound-treated chambers equipped with audio/video equipment running under a custom-developed software program. In the second stage, simulation experiments using the semantic differential methodology were performed utilizing 26 paid participants (14 college students and 12 housewives). The results indicated that audio/video synchronization and the frame rate were the main system factors for both subject groups, but different pattern of factors' influence was found according to the group, implying that the system configuration would hopefully accommodate the characteristics of the end users. Also, a single quality index, developed for system preference, was revealed to be highly correlated with user satisfaction. The results provide some fundamental data on the human subjective perception of multimedia telecommunications quality, and further can help establish the quality standards to enhance service level.

  • The current article proposed to develop a geometrical model for the analysis and modelling of the uniaxial functionally graded structure using the higher-order displacement kinematics with and without the presence of porosity including the distribution. Additionally, the formulation is capable of modelling three different kinds of grading patterns i.e., Power-law, sigmoid and exponential distribution of the individual constituents through the thickness direction. Also, the model includes the distribution of porosity (even and uneven kind) through the panel thickness. The structural governing equation of the porous graded structure is obtained (Hamilton's principle) and solved mathematically by means of the isoparametric finite element technique. Initially, the linear frequency parameters are obtained for different geometrical configuration via own computer code. The comparison and the corresponding convergence studies are performed for the unidirectional FG structure for the validation purpose. Finally, the impact of different influencing parameters like aspect ratio (O), thickness ratio (S), curvature ratio (R/h), porosity index (λ), type of porosity (even or uneven), power-law exponent (n), boundary condition on the free vibration characteristics are obtained for the FG panel and discussed in details.

  • Four-rotor dish-shaped unmanned underwater vehicles (FRDS UUVs) are new type underwater vehicles. The main goal of this paper is to develop a quick method to optimize the design of hydraulic support landing platform for the new UUV. In this paper, the geometry configuration and instability type of the platform are defined. Computational investigations are carried out to study the hydrodynamic performance of the landing platform using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. Then, the response surface model of the optimization objective is established. The intelligent particle swarm optimization (PSO) is applied to finding the optimal solution. The result demonstrates that the stability of landing platform is significantly improved with the global objective index increasing from 1.045 to 1.158 (10.86% higher) after the optimization process.

  • Since the secretion of specific chiral isomers in urine (or plasma) is very crucial to diagnose some inborn metabolic disorders, clinical application of dual column achiral differential method has been performed for the absolute configuration of chiral compounds. Extracted from the acidified urine with diethyl ether, carboxylic functional group of organic acid (stereoisomers of the volatile) was derivatized with (-)-menthylation or (S)-(+)-3-methyl-2-butylation and followed by O-trifluoroacylation. Each of the enantiomers was accurately separated from the library matched double column (achiral) with a retention index (I). In various inborn metabolic disease urines, absolute chirality was identified correctly in the urine (10 patients) with inborn metabolic disease (including secretion of D, L- lactic acid, D, L-3-hydroxybutyric acid, and D, L-2-hydroxyglutaric acid). In this study, we identified and isolated the volatile diastereomer as a useful diagnostic marker, this successful application to urine specimens may be useful for diagnostic classification of inherited metabolic disorders.

  • The effect of the radial temperature gradient and the presence of slits in the wall of outer of two cylinders involved in creating a Taylor-Couette flow was investigated by measuring the velocity field inside the gap. The slits were azimuthally located along the inner wall of the outer cylinder and the number of slits used in this study was 18. The radius ratio and aspect ratio of the models were 0.825 and 48, respectively. The heating film wrapped around the inner cylinder was used for generating the constant heat flux and we ensured the constant temperature condition at the outer space of the outer cylinder. The velocity fields were measured by using the PIV(particle image velocimetry) method. The refractive index matching method was applied to remove image distortion. The results were compared with plain wall configuration of Taylor-Couette flow. From the results, the presence of slits in the wall of outer cylinder and temperature gradient increased the flow instability.

  • Press-brake bending is used to shape flat and thick plates into a targeted circular configuration without excessive localized thinning or thickening. A brake bending press called 'a knife press bending apparatus' has been widely adopted to manufacture thick, large and long pipe from initially thick plate. Submerged Arc Welded (SAW) pipes are also produced by employing press-brake bending. These pipes are mainly used for oil, natural gas and water pipelines. The principal process variables for press-brake bending can be summarized as stroke of the press-brake knife, the distance between both roll in the lower die, and the feeding length of the plate. Many combinations of these process variables are available, thus various pipe diameters can be realized. In the current study, a series of repetitive numerical simulations by feeding a thick plate with initial thickness of 25.4mm were conducted with the consideration of elastic recovery. Furthermore, an index for SAW pipe production is proposed which can be widely used in industry.

  • The concept of variable-geometry truss structure(VGTS) is introduced as a class of actively controlled adaptive structure. VGTS can purposefully vary its geometric configurations by changing the lengths of some members of the structure. General kinematics and inverse kinematics of a statically determinate VGTS(variable geometry truss structure) are studied. The solution technique is based on the Jacobian matrix obtained via joint equilibrium equations. Pseudoinverse control method is applied to resolve the redundancy of a large VGTS. two types of actuator layout of octahedral type VGTS, VG truss and Stewart platform, are compared. Introducing the concept of performance index, Stewart platform based layout was found to has less consumption energy and manipulation time. A functional VGTS model with 3 octahedral modules is designed and manufactured for the labaratory demonstration. Six vertically located length-variable members are used to create general 6 d.o.f. motions.

  • Habitat loss and fragmentation are ongoing major anthropogenic impacts on landscapes, which can strongly affect ecosystems, populations and species. The studies on forest fragmentation have been progressed, but the studies on definition of forest fragmentation and their synthetic trend in South Korea still leaves much to be desired. Therefore we set the definition of forest fragmentation and reviewed the related papers. We can give a definition that forest fragmentation is not only a process of spatial landscape transformation, but also a process of ecosystem change by it. The trend of studies on forest fragmentation divided into two fields, landscape and ecosystem changes. Forest fragmentation caused by land change altered the composition and configuration of forest patches. Most studies related on that analyzed the change using landscape index. The effects of forest fragmentation on ecosystem subdivided into three fields : biodiversity, edge effects, and invasive species, but the studies in South Korea is short. The study on relations between forest fragmentation and ecosystem change is necessary to face the Convention on Biological Diversity in South Korea. In addition, the fundamental studies on biodiversity is important to mitigate against forest fragmentation.

  • This paper presents the service restoration in electric power distribution systems. The aim of the service restoration is to control an emergency taken place in distribution systems and to restore out-of service areas as soon as possible when a fault occurs in distribution systems. For this reason, new service restoration strategies in multi-outage area are suggested in this paper. The suggested algorithm consist of two schemes. One is an individual restoration scheme, the other is an integrated restoration scheme. The former determines a restoration order of outage areas based on a restoration index. Unless the former scheme can generate a feasible restoration plan, the latter one will try to find out a new configuration without an overloaded section through tie exchange method.

  • The purpose of this study is to computerize street tree management using a CAD program in order to manage the drawing record of street trees systematically and concurrently. The configuration of this program is composed of Reference Data, Data Inquiry, and Cost Assessment. The Reference Data includes characteristics of trees, monthly managements records, damage by blight and insects and usage of pesticides. The Data Inquiry includes an individual search of the tree index, simple searches and multiple searches. The Cost Assessment includes two main components, the data input with labor cost, manure ocst and pesticide cost and the assesment of management cost for prevention of blight and insects, pruning and fertilization. The results of this study are as follows: 1) When there are practices such as transplanting and removing of street trees it is immediately updated with the various situation. By creating an in progress a tree management system, up to the date information can be given to the manager for decision making. 2) To identify individual tree at the site or in drawing, the street name and numbers were used instead of coordinates. Tree tags are attached to the street trees individually. It can make DB management simple and easy. 3) By doing simple or multiple search with constructed DB, data can be provided quickly. 4) The result of this type of search are useful in the assessment of management cost very useful in regards to items such as the pruning, pesticides scattering and fertilization. 5) By using the AutoCAD software and existing PC without purchasing new equipment, the cost of system implementation can be minimized.
