  • ISO(Independent System Operator) or TSO(Transmission System Operator) use power system analysis program to simulate contingency analysis and remedial actions to operate power system stably. Generally, power system analysis program provides automated analysis functions(or modules) to deal with wide area power system. However, because of missed contingency cases, automated contingency analysis has no practical use or has limitation. And in case of remedial action, it doesn't support automated function or takes a lot of times to study, because of simulation in manual for each cases. This paper suggests that new relation with buses and transmission line properties of power system DB used for power system analysis program to simulate automated contingency including all contingency cases needed in the field without missed cases. And it proposes automated remedial action scheme based on practical approach analysis to alleviate overloading or voltage problems. Finally it deals with automated contingency/remedial action analysis(automated scheduled outage) program which is developed by KEPCO and its performance and proposed schemes are proven by case study for real Korean power system data.

  • Electric power industries in several countries are currently undergoing major changes, mainly represented by the privatizations of the power plants and distribution systems. Reliable operations of the power plants directly contribute to the revenue increases of the generation companies in such competitive environments. Strategic optimizations should be performed between the levels of the reliabilities to be maintained and the various preventive maintenance costs, which require the accurate estimations of the power plant reliabilities. However, accurate estimations of the power plant reliabilities are often limited by the lack of accurate power plant failure data. A power plant is not supposed to be failed that often. And if it fails, its impact upon the power system stability is quite substantial in most cases, setting aside the significant revenue losses and lowered company images. Reliability assessment is also important for Independent System Operators(ISO) or Market Operators to properly assess the level of needed compensations for the installed capacity based on the availability of the generation plants. In this paper, we present a power plant reliability estimation technique that can be applied when the failure data is insufficient. Median rank and Weibull distribution are used to accommodate such insufficiency. The Median rank is utilized to derive the cumulative failure probability for each ordered failure. The Weibull distribution is used because of its flexibility of accommodating several different distribution types based on the shape parameter values. The proposed method is applied to small size failure data and its application potential is demonstrated.

  • Energy autonomy is a system that is sustained by energy from an independent and distributed source such as renewable energy. In this paper, we propose a robotic energy autonomy in which a robot obtains energy from a renewable energy source with a limited storage capacity. As an energy transfer method, wireless power transfer is used to solve the problem of the conventional contact charging method, mechanical complexity, and to obtain high energy transfer efficiency, the image information is used to align the transmitting and receiving coils accurately. A small scale thermoelectric energy source with boost converter, battery charger, and wireless power transfer coil is constructed and an actual charging experiment is conducted to verify the proposed autonomy system.

  • Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) used in variable speed constant frequency wind energy generation system can capture wind energy with the highest efficiency by using the stator flux oriented vector control method. This paper sets up a DFIG modeling of wind generation system in PSCAD/EMTDC to simulate the operational performance with wind speed variation. In order to achieve the characteristics of the maximum utilization of wind power, this paper uses the vector control technology to track largest wind power and the independent control of generator active and reactive power.

  • The deregulation problem has recently attracted attentions in a competitive electric power market, where the cost must be earmarked fairly and precisely for the customers and the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as well. Transmission loss is an one of several important factors that determines power transmission cost. Because the cost caused by transmission losses is about $3{\sim}5%$, it is important to allocate transmission losses into each bus in a power system. This paper presents the new algorithm to allocate transmission losses based on an integration method using the loss sensitivity. It provides the buswise incremental transmission losses through the calculation of load ratios considering the transaction strategy of an overall system. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by the case studies carried out on the WSCC 9-bus and IEEE 14-bus systems.

  • This paper, we propose a new phase-locked loop (PLL) system with the controllable output phase, independent from the output frequency, and lock-up time. This PLL system has a dual control loop is described, the inner loop greatly improved VCO characteristic such as faster speed response as well as higher operation bandwidth, to minimize the effect of the VCO noise and the power supply variation and also get better linearity of VCO output. The main loop is the heart of this PLL which greatly improved the output frequency instability due to the external high frequency noise coupling to the input reference frequency also the main loop can control the output phase, independent from the output frequency, and reduce the lock-up time of the step frequency response. The experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed strategy.

  • This paper presents the implementation and characteristic analysis of a drive system for a three-phase permanent magnet motor with independent excitation winding that is applicable for electric bicycles. The design features improves the phase current waveform, output power, and torque by using advance angle control. This adjusts the phase angle of each phase current in relation to back EMF. In addition, a DC-side PI current control is performed through PWM generation circuit using a low-cost one-chip microcontroller and a CPLD chip, resulting in reduced system costs. Finally, the validity of this control scheme for driving electric bicycles and output/torque improvement characteristics are verified through analysis and experimental results.

  • In solar power system, the height and azimuth of the sun are important parameters which control generated power magnitude. The tracking method that controls the daily generation magnitude according to latitude and longitude using the two axles is often used in the existing sunlight tracking system today. In this two-axle PV track control system, the self-load is concentrated on one FRAME. It is influenced of the regular load, snow load and the wind load, etc. It is difficult to set up the system in the conventional building. This research is a development about the small-scale economy track device of independent load-dispersing solar generation system. The position tracking algorithm is through the new coordinates transformation calculating the height and azimuth of the sun.

  • In recent hydraulic actuation systems, conventional hydraulic spool valves with pressure compensators are becoming less popular, after the introduction of the independent metering concept for valves. Within this concept, four valves are needed for actuating a single cylinder. Subsequently, this increases the freedom of controlling both chamber pressures of the cylinder, and it then provides for electronically-controlled pressure compensation facilities. Additionally, this has the potential to save valuable energy. The primary focus of this paper is to develop a new generation of hydraulic circuits using the independent metering valve (IMV). This configuration can function well as a conventional IMV circuit while providing better pressure control. We first describe the working principles of five distinct modes of the proposed IMV system. Then, mathematical models for each working mode are presented. Finally, we present numerical simulations that have been carried out to evaluate the system performance, in comparison with that of the conventional IMV configuration. The simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the new IMV configuration is superior to the conventional IMV system in terms of energy savings.

  • The energy consumed by buildings among the total national energy consumption is more than 10% of the total. For this reason, Korea has adopted the zero energy building policy since 2025, and research on the energy saving technology of buildings has been demanded. Analysis of buildings' energy consumption patterns shows that lighting, heating and cooling energy account for more than 60% of total energy consumption, which is directly related to solar power acquisition and window opening and closing operation. In this paper, we have developed a low - power IoT sensor module for window system to transfer acquired information to building energy management system. This module transmits the external environment and window opening / closing status information to the building energy management system in real time, and constructs the network to actively take energy saving measures. The power used in the module is designed as an independent power source using solar power among the harvest energy. The topology of the power supply is a Buck converter, which is charged at 4V to the lithium ion battery through MPPT control, and the efficiency is about 85.87%. Communication is configured to be able to transmit in real time by applying WiFi. In order to reduce the power consumption of the module, we analyzed the hardware and software aspects and implemented a low power IoT sensor module.
