  • The government is fostering a renewable energy industry as an alternative to handle the energy crisis. Among the renewable energy systems available, geothermal energy is being highlighted as being highly efficient and safely operable without the effect of outdoor air. Accordingly, a study on the geothermal heat pump is in progress in various worldwide perspective. However, Geothermal energy is only in charge of part load of the building due to the high initial installation cost in korea. Moreover, its efficiency is reduced due to the use of independent existing heat sources. In this study, after selecting the building containing the actual installed geothermal heat pump, the use of excellent geothermal heat pump systems was maximized in terms of the energy efficiency. The objective of this study is to show the operation method of geothermal heat pump system to improve energy efficiency through the TRNSYS simulation. This paper proposed operation methods of geothermal heat pump control according to outdoor air temperature. The result of this study is that existing operation method had some problems and if offered improvement is applied to real condition, energy consumption would be decreased.

  • In this paper, I devise a balance-swap optimization (BSO) algorithm to solve economic load dispatch with a quadratic fuel cost function. This algorithm firstly sets initial values to $P_i{\leftarrow}P_i^{max}$, (${\Sigma}P_i^{max}$ > $P_d$) and subsequently entails two major processes: a balance process whereby a generator's power i of $_{max}\{F(P_i)-F(P_i-{\alpha})\}$, ${\alpha}=_{min}(P_i-P_i^{min})$ is balanced by $P_i{\leftarrow}P_i-{\alpha}$ until ${\Sigma}P_i=P_d$; and a swap process whereby $_{max}\{F(P_i)-F(P_i-{\beta})\}$ > $_{min}\{F(P_i+{{\beta})-F(P_j)\}$, $i{\neq}j$, ${\beta}$ = 1.0, 0.1, 0.1, 0.01, 0.001 is set at $P_i{\leftarrow}P_i-{\beta}$, $P_j{\leftarrow}P_j+{\beta}$. When applied to 15, 20, and 38-generators benchmark data, this simple algorithm has proven to consistently yield the best possible results. Moreover, this algorithm has dramatically reduced the costs for a centralized operation of 73-generators - a sum of the three benchmark cases - which could otherwise have been impossible for independent operations.

  • This paper presents a new method of local voltage control to achieve coordinative control among UPFC(Unified Power Flow Controller) and conventional reactive compensation equipments, such as switched-shunt and ULTC(Under-Load Tap Changing) transformer. Reactive power control has various difficult aspects to control because of difficulty of system analysis. Recently, the progress of power electronics technologies has lead to commercial availability of several FACTS(Flexible AC Transmission System) devices. The UPFC(Unified Power Flow Controller) simultaneously allows the independent control of active and reactive power flows as well as control of the voltage profile. When conventional reactive power sources and UPFC are used to control system voltage, the UPFC reacts to the voltage deviation faster than the conventional reactive power sources. Keeping reactive power reserve in an UPFC during steady-state operation is always needed to provide reactive power requirements during emergencies. Therefore, coordination control among UPFC and conventional reactive power sources is needed. This paper describe the method to keep or control the voltage of power system of local area and to manege reactive power reserve using PSS/E with Python. The result of simulation shows that the proposed method can control the local bus voltage within the given voltage limit and manege reactive power reserve.

  • In this paper, the design, fabrication and characterization of a piezoelectric friction damper are presented. It was sized with the proposed practical procedure to minimize the story drift and floor acceleration of an existing 1/4-scale, three-story frame structure under both near-fault and far-field earthquakes. The design operation friction force in kip was numerically determined to range from 2.2 to 3.3 times the value of the peak ground acceleration in g (gravitational acceleration). Experimental results indicated that the load-displacement loop of the damper is nearly rectangular in shape and independent of the excitation frequency. The coefficient of friction of the damper is approximately 0.85 when the clamping force on the damper is above 400 lbs. It was found that the friction force variation of the damper generated by piezoelectric actuators with 1000 Volts is approximately 90% of the expected value. The properties of the damper are insensitive to its ambient temperature and remain almost the same after being tested for more than 12,000 cycles.

  • Up to now, most robot control systems are very naive. They consist of a number of independent position-servo loops to control each joint angle separately. Those control systems have constant predefined gains and do not cover the complex dynamic interactions between manipulator joints. As a result, the manipulator is severely limited in range of application, speed of operation and variation of payload. This study proposed a new method to design a robot manipulator controller capable of tracking the reference trajectories of joint angles in a reasonable accuracy to cope with actual situations of varying payload, uncertain parameters. The adaptive model following control method has been used to improve existing robot manipulator controllers. The proposed controller is operated by adjusting its gains based on the response of the manipulator in such a way that the manipulator closely matches the reference model trajectories defined by the designer. The stability of adaptive controller is based on the Second Method of Lyapunov. The coupling among joints and the nonlinearity in the dynamic equation are explicitly considered. The designed manipulator controller shows good tracking performance under various load varia- tion and parameter uncertainties.

  • An upper bound solution is obtained to perform the process analysis of hot strip rolling process. The material flows within the roll bite at various geometries and frictional conditions are obtained from finite element analysis and the typical flow pattern which is necessary to determine the kinematically admissible velocity field is assumed. From the kinematically admissible velocity field, the upper bound energy is calculated and the rolling load, angle of neutral point and forward slip ratio at various operational conditions are obtained from upper bound energy. The process analysis of above mentioned parameters at various operational conditions have provided valuable information which is hard to obtain during rolling operation and the predicted ranges of quantitive values from these analyses lie whthin the bound of actual operational data.

  • This paper is concerned with the characteristics on the statistical parameters of vibration signal from bearing with changing its operating conditions as well as the spreading of faults. The rms, Kurtosis, crest factor, probability of exceedance and probability density function have been chose as the statistical parameters. To characterize of each, vibration signals have been recorded from four ball tester at different loads, operation speeds and time. The values of the statistical parameters for each frequency band have been calculated after A/D conversion and digital filtering of the recorded signals. It has been found that unlike rms values the statistical parameters such as Kurtosis etc. are almost unchanging with the change of the operating conditions such as load and speed. This suggests that the statistical parameters may be used for determining the development of faults independent of the operating conditions. In fact, the statistical parameters deviate considerably from their respective normal values when the faults developed under load conditions in the samples, conforming the suggestion.

  • DC railway power supply system generally uses the running rails as negative-polarity return conductor for traction load current, and the induced rail potential and stay current cause serious problems to any electrified matter in the underground and also safety problems to human body. This paper presents a new algorithm for the analysis of the rail potential and the stray current in DC railway power system operated under independent/parallel power feeding mode. The effect of load current fluctuation during train operation is also calculated by using TPS(Train Performance Simulation) program to analysis the variation of the railway potential and stray current along railway track. Simulation program is developed based on the proposed algorithm and case studies are provided.

  • Analysis is performed to determine the optimal lengths or cross-sectional areas of refrigerator-cooled current leads that can be applied to the conduction-cooled superconducting systems. The binary current lead is composed of the series combination of a normal metal at the upper(warm) part and a high $T_c$ superconductor(HTS) at the lower(cold) part. The heat conduction toward the cold end of HTS part constitutes a major refrigeration load. In addition, the joint between the parts should be cooled by a refrigerator in order to reduce the load at the low end and maintain the HTS part in a superconducting state. The sum of the work inputs required for the two refrigeration loads needs to be minimized for an optimal operation. In this design, three simple models that depict the refrigeration performance as functions of cooling temperature are developed based on some of the existing refrigerators. By solving one-dimensional conduction equation that take into account the temperature-dependent properties of the materials, the refrigeration works are numerically calculated for various values of the joint temperature and the sizes of two parts. The results show that for given size of HTS, there exist the optimal values for the joint temperature and the size of the normal metal. It is also found that the refrigeration work decreases as the length of HTS increases and that the optimal size of normal metal is quite independent of the size of HTS. For a given length of HTS, there is an optimal cross-sectional area and it increases as the length increases. The dependence of the optimal sizes on the refrigerator models employed are presented for 1kA leads.

  • In order to produce electric vehicle demand forecasting information, which is an important element of the plan to expand charging facilities for electric vehicles, a model for predicting electric vehicle demand was proposed using Exponential Smoothing. In order to establish input data for the model, the monthly power demand of cities and counties was applied as independent variables, monthly electric vehicle charging stations, monthly electric vehicle charging stations, and monthly electric vehicle registration data. To verify the accuracy of the electric vehicle power demand prediction model, we compare the results of the statistical methods Exponential Smoothing (ETS) and ARIMA models with error rates of 12% and 21%, confirming that the ETS presented in this paper is 9% more accurate as electric vehicle power demand prediction models. It is expected that it will be used in terms of operation and management from planning to install charging stations for electric vehicles using this model in the future.
