  • An improvement in the current fed parallel resonant half bridge (CFPRHB) circuits used in fluorescent lamp electronic ballasts is provided in this paper. The CFPRHB belongs to the self-oscillating family which includes the current fed push-pull and series resonant inverters, most of which are used in instant-start applications. However, many failure modes are related to the bypass capacitor according to an analysis of failed samples. In this paper, the operating functions of the existing topology in the steady state are analyzed and the main root cause of failure modes has been found. Comparisons between the two topologies are conducted in terms of the voltage stress of the bypass capacitor as well as the thermal and performance of the ballasts to verify the advantages of the proposed topology. It is found that the improved topology is capable of enhancing the reliability and reducing the cost of products without having a negative influence on the system performance.

  • In this paper, a novel method of sensorless control scheme is proposed to apply on a single phase hybrid SRM used in high speed operation. The proposed method utilizes beneficially permanent magnet field whose performance is motor parameter independent to estimate the rotor position. Also, the current slope is adopted to complete the sensorless control when the motor running with heavy torque at high speed condition. Through this approach, the adjustable turn on/off position can be achieved without prior knowledge of inductance profile which is always employed by many sensorless schemes. And this paper may offer an available method to do the sensorless control in hybrid SRM used for high speed running.

  • In this paper, a novel method of sensorless control scheme is proposed to apply on a single phase hybrid SRM used in high speed operation. The proposed method utilizes beneficially permanent magnet field whose performance is motor parameter independent to estimate the rotor position. The differential value of back-EMF is used to detect its peak point when there is no current conducting in the winding. Through this approach, the adjustable turn on/off position can be achieved without prior knowledge of inductance profile which is always employed by many sensorless schemes. And this paper may offer an available method to do the sensorless control in hybrid SRM used for high speed running.

  • Demand Response Programs (DRP) are critical to the operation of efficient and competitive energy markets. and provide critical market improvements to Independent System Operators (ISO). To all energy market Participants, they Provide savings and cost reductions when end users have the ability to respond to wholesale prices. Now, in the competitive electricity market, DRP is classified by Emergency and Economic DRP to reduce costs and maintain reliability. In this paper, we survey the trend of Demand Response Program over the world and compare the practical performance among the markets in US.

  • To predict efficiency of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors(IPMSM) and to cope with the demagnetization risk of permanent magnets used in the IPMSM, accurate iron analysis of the IPMSM is very important at the motor design stage. In the analysis, we calculate the operation condition such as rotor speed and current angle. and then, we analyzed the iron loss of the machine for electric vehicle according to its driving condition. From the analysis results, it was shown that the harmonic iron losses of stator are larger than before at field-weakening region. In addition, it was revealed that rotor iron loss mainly induced by stator slot-ripples is independent of current angle and only varied according to the speed.

  • While industry understands the importance of keeping equipment operational and well maintained, the importance of tracking maintenance information in reliability models is often overlooked. Prognostic models can be used to predict the failure times of critical equipment, but more often than not, these models assume that all maintenance actions are the same or do not consider maintenance at all. This study investigates the influence of integrating maintenance information on prognostic model prediction accuracy. By incorporating maintenance information to develop maintenance-dependent prognostic models, prediction accuracy was improved by more than 40% compared with traditional maintenance-independent models. This study acts as a proof of concept, showing the importance of utilizing maintenance information in modern prognostics for industrial equipment.

  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of the multimodal group intervention that combined animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and integrated play therapy (IPT) on depression and self-esteem in undergraduate university students. The subjects were 40 students attending animal-related and social welfare departments of universities located in a metropolitan city. The multimodal intervention program was conducted for eight sessions (twice a week, 60 min each) in the experimental group. Data analysis was conducted using the independent sample t-test, ANCOVA, and paired sample t-test for pre- and post-test. Therefore, the multimodal intervention program applying AAT and IPT showed positive effects on depression and self-esteem in university students. Based on these results, this study proposed the operation of multidisciplinary education and practical and policy utilization methods to reduce depression among university students and help improve their self-esteem.

  • The Double-sided Linear Switched Reluctance Machine (DLSRM) suffers from complex eccentricities in practical operations. A novel sensorless control method for a DLSRM with eccentricities is developed in this paper. The influences of eccentricities on the machine inductance characteristics and the estimated positions in sensorless control systems are discussed. A new position index, which is independent of eccentricities, is proposed according to an analysis of a DLSRM equivalent magnetic circuit. On the basis of this position index, the starting and low-velocity operation of eccentric DLSRMs are achieved. Experimental results obtained in the laboratory validate the proposed method.

  • In this study, a batch least square estimator that utilizes optical observation data is developed and utilized to determine geostationary orbits (GEO). Through numerical simulations, the effects of error sources, such as clock errors, measurement noise, and the a priori state error, are analyzed. The actual optical tracking data of a GEO satellite, the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS), provided by the optical wide-field patrol network (OWL-Net) is used with the developed batch filter for orbit determination. The accuracy of the determined orbit is evaluated by comparison with two-line elements (TLE) and confirmed as proper for the continuous monitoring of GEO objects. Also, the measurement residuals are converged to several arcseconds, corresponding to the OWL-Net performance. Based on these analyses, it is verified that the independent operation of electro-optic space surveillance systems is possible, and the ephemerides of space objects can be obtained.
