  • In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites, cracking of the reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the cracked reinforcements lose load carrying capacity. This paper deals with an incremental damage theory of particle or short-fiber reinforced composites. The composite undergoing damage process contains intact and broken reinforcements in a matrix. To describe the load carrying capacity of cracked reinforcement, the average stress of cracked ellipsoidal inhomogeneity in an infinite body as proposed in the previous paper is introduced. An incremental constitutive relation on particle or short-fiber reinforced composites including progressive cracking of the reinforcements is developed based on Eshelby's (1957) equivalent inclusion method and Mori and Tanaka\`s (1973) mean field concept. Influence of the cracking damage on the stress-strain response of composites is demonstrated.

  • Hopfield neural network has been applied to the problem of economic load dispatch(ELD) of electric power. The optimum values of neuron potentials are represented in terms of large numbers. The differential synchronous transition mode is used in this simulation. Through case studies, we have shown the possibility of the application of neural network to ELD. In case of including the transmission losses, the proposed method has an advantage that the problem can be solved simply with one neural network, without calculating incremental fuel costs and incremental losses required by traditional method.

  • In this paper, a new forming process of large-size forgings of converged nozzle-shape is developed by the experimental study using the incremental forging method and combined forming method. The development of the forming process is focused on the manufacturing of large-size forgings by the press with medium load capacity. Various related processes are proposed and modelling experiments using plasticine are carried out. Thus, the incremental forging method for expanding is recommanded from the study of formability and forming load, etc. The selected process is then subjected to modelling experiments of lead and the design parameters such as preform for final process, die-width of the upper die and reduction amount of each stroke are determined. In order to verify the effectiveness of the selected process, 1/7 scale prototype experiment of the real material is carried out. Forgings of converged nozzle shape can be produced by the developed process within the limit loads and with the simple tools.

  • This paper addresses a modified arc-length method for the nonlinear finite element analysis of a structure which is loaded in incremental and fixed forces, simultaneously. The main idea of the method is to separate the displacement term by the constant force from that by the incremental force. As the illustrative examples of the applicability of the present algorithm, a parametric study is performed on the nonlinear buckling behavior of composite cylindrical panels under the combined load of the incremented compression and the constant lateral pressure.

  • Fracture resistance(J-R) curves, which are used for the elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analyses, are known to be dependent on the cyclic loading history. The objective of this paper is to study the effect of reverse cyclic loading on J-R curves in CT specimens. The effect of two parameters was observed on the J-R curves during the reverse cyclic loading. One was the minimum-to-maximum load ratio(R) and the other was the incremental plastic displacement(${\delta}_{cycle}/{\delta}_i$), which is related to the amount of crack growth that occurs in a cycle. Fracture resistance test on CT specimens with varying load ratio and incremental plastic displacement were performed. For the SA 516 Gr. 70 steel, the results showed that the J-R curves were decreased with decreasing the load ratio and the incremental plastic displacement. When the load ratio was set to -1, the results of the J-R curves and the $J_i$ value were about $40{\sim}50$ percent of those for the monotonic loading condition. Also on condition that the incremental plastic displacement reached 1/40, the J-R curves and the $J_i$ value were about $50{\sim}60$ percent of those for the incremental plastic displacement of 1/10.

  • In this study, a penalty method effective for the case that has no snap-back phenomenon, is proposed and an adaptive method which choose the penalty method or Riks' type method, is suggested for the case of snap-back problem. And for the case that loads are applied to one or more points of a structure, the Riks' method is applied in general, but under certain condition choice of new incremental load parameter is suggested to accelerate the convergence rate. Finally, for the case that displacements of a structure are controlled at one or more points Riks' type method is proposed. In this case, the proposed method is applied in general but under certain condition it is recommended to choose other incremental displacement parameter to eliminate probable divergence. Five examples are analysed and compared with the result of published literature.

  • In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites cracking of the reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the broken reinformcements lose load carrying capacity . The average stress in the inhomogeneity represents its load carrying capacity and the difference between the average stresses of the intact and broken inhomogeneities indicates the loss of load carrying capacity due to cracking damage. The composite in damage process contains intact and broken reinforcements in a matrix, An incremental constitutive relation of particle or short-fiber reinforced composites including the progressive cracking damage of the reinforcements have been developed based on the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and Mori-Tanaka's mean field concept. influence of the cracking damage on the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and Mori-Tanaka's mean field concept. • An automatic incremental algorithm for geometric non-linear finite element analysis of the structures subjected to the conservative and non-conservative forces is presented. By making efficient combination of the load incremental method and the displacement incremental method, this scheme can trace various post-buckling equilibrium path such as snap-through and turning-back. Several numerical examples to demonstrate the feasibility of the present algorithm, over ranges of deformation that are well beyond those likely to occur in practical structures, are given and discussed.

  • A new system of equations governing the nonlinear thin laminated plates with large deflections using von Karman equations is derived. The effects of transverse shear in the thin interlayer are included as part of the analysis. The finite difference method is used to perform the geometrically nonlinear behavior of the plate. The resultant equations permit the analysis of the effect of transverse shear stress deformation on the overall behavior of the interlayer using the load incremental method. For the purpose of feasibility and validity of this present method, the numerical results are compared with other available solutions for accuracy as well as efficiency. The solution techniques have been implemented and the numerical results of example problem are discussed and evaluated.
