Survey on the Income Distribution of Fishing Households in Korea (어가소득분포에 관한 조사연구)

  • This paper first makes a survey of fishing household economy which possess fishing boats under 10 gross Tons by a questionnaire, and makes a comparative study of major indicators of fishing household economy between Korea and Japan, and finally suggests some policies for the fisheries management. Major indicators are the status of fishery household members, number of fishing boats which possess, fisheries incomes, fishing household incomes, side business incomes of fishing household, disposal incomes, living expenses, sufficient degree of living cost, average propensity to consumption and so on. Some policies for improvement in fishing household incomes are suggested in the paper as follows: ⑴ Form a policy similar to a project aiming for increasing the income of fishermen so that the side business income will also increase. ⑵ The point of view in tracing origin of low productivity. ⑶ It has drawn up a plan to encourage saving after analyzing the cause of high propensity to consumption. ⑷ The paper is aimed to collect basic statistical materials for fisheries administration.

How Does Intellectual Capital Fuel Non-Interest Incomes in Banks? New Case from an Emerging Country

  • The aim of this study is to answer the straightforward question of whether the implementation of IC has fueled non-interest incomes of banks or not. By utilizing the data of 26 domestic banks in Vietnam and employing the value-added intellectual coefficient model (VAIC) as the measure of IC efficiency, our empirical evidence manifests that IC plays a vital role in fostering non-interest incomes of banks. When dividing VAIC into different components, we find that structure capital employed (SCE) is the most important component to enhance the expansion of these incomes compared with other components including capital employed efficiency (CEE), human capital efficiency (HCE). These findings remain unchanged through some robustness tests performed. While the main driver of IC and SCE, CEE component becomes a substantial advantage to increase non-interest incomes in large banks. Meanwhile, the degree of impact of SCE is higher in small banks compared with large ones. Overall, this study would provide a deep insight into the role of IC in the transformation into non-interest income activities of banks in an emerging country, and therefore our findings would be useful for both scholars and policy-makers in Vietnam, where has undergone the period of major reforms in banking system.

  • The political and technological countermeasures to cope with the UR problems are under studying at present or some of them are already applied to increas farm household income. It is evident that the leisture farm development is considered the best alternative among the countermeasures. On account of mitigating labour shortage, a most difficult problem encountered by agriculture, and of promoting consumption of farm products, the leisure farm development could increase farm household incomes accoringly. This study is ultimately aimed at identifing the countermeasures to increase farm household incomes by suggestion of the improvement of leisure farm management thorough survey of the present leisure farm management status. The leisure farm. management survey was carried out based on the seven leisure farms such as Songnam, Cheongrock, Yusung, Duryong, Hwachun, Maesan and Sinhuck which are saperately located in Chungnam Province.

Effects of Worker Status Change Type of the Household Heads on Household Income Since Korean Financial Crisis-excel (외환위기 이후 가구주의 종사상지위 변화유형이 가계소득증감여부에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effects of household head’s worker status change type on household income and household head’s income using a total combined sample of 2,578 households from Korea surveyed in 1998 and 2002 KLIPS(Korean Labor and Income Panel Study). Binary logit regression results showed that household incomes were likely to decrease significantly when household head’s changed worker status from a regular employee, a temporary employee or a daily worker, or an employer or a self-employed to no job status, or from a regular employee to a temporary employee or a daily worker, an employer or a self-employed, or from an employer or a self-employed to a regular employee compared to a regular employee status maintenance. In contrast, household head’s incomes were likely to increase significantly when household head’s changed worker status from a temporary to a regular employee compared to a regular employee status maintenance. Women household heads were significantly associated with the likelihood of the decrease of household head’s income compared to men household heads. Household heads beyond their forties were significantly associated with the likelihood of the decrease of household head’s income compared to household heads in their thirties age-group counterparts. Household heads with education level beyond high school graduation were significantly associated with the likelihood of the increase of household head’s income compared to household heads with the education level of high school graduation. This study shows that a more comprehesive labor policy is needed for achieving sustainable household income inflow.

Evaluation of a theory-based community intervention to increase fruit and vegetable intakes of women with limited incomes

  • The study objectives were to increase both the stage of readiness to eat fruit and vegetables as well as the intakes of women who participated in the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) for families with limited incomes. The intervention was to enhance the currently used curriculum, Eating Right Is Basic III (ERIB3), with stage-specific processes based on the Trans-Theoretical Model of readiness to change. Trained EFNEP community workers taught the enhanced curriculum to 90 mothers in the experimental county and to 53 mothers in the control county. Pre- and post-intervention measures included stages of readiness to eat fruit and vegetables and to intake as assessed by 24-hour dietary recalls and staging questions. Most women recruited into EFNEP were in Action and Preparation Stages (53.5%). Fruit and vegetable intakes showed a linear trend along with the Stage of Change for fruit and vegetable. After intervention, some combination of the ERIB3 and the fruit and vegetables-enhanced ERIB3 resulted in a reported 1/2 servings/day increase in fruits and vegetables in both the control and the experimental counties, although changes were not significant. EFNEP women also moved along the Stage of Change Continuum for fruits and vegetables in both counties. The percentage of people who ate 5 or more servings of fruit and vegetables was significant, however, only in the experimental group. We encourage health professionals to apply lessons learned from this intervention and to continue to pursue theoretically based interventions to change dietary behaviors.

  • Sheep meat is the most expensive meat in developed countries. Consumption is dependent on cultural factors and will increase as population and incomes grow. In the main exporting countries (New Zealand and Australia), sheep numbers are decreasing as the market for wool is declining. Sheep meat production will develop in small and medium scale commercial systems, close to their markets.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the performance and farmer's awareness on the large-scale environment-friendly agricultural districts (LEAD). For this, we survey 393 farmers who cultivate in the 14 LEAD. Most of farmers aware a necessity of LEAD project. They have a higher awareness and practical use on the 'production facilities and equipments for environment-friendly agricultural materials' and 'resource recovery center of crop-animal farming'. The spread and consciousness on the environment-friendly agriculture increase before LEAD project. Also the environment-friendly agricultural areas and incomes slightly increase. The results of this study show that the LEAD project need a modification in to response to change of agricultural issues and customer's needs.

Can Minimum Wage Policy Increase Personal Income? -Evidence from China

  • Purpose: As an important provision to protect the rights and interests of low-income groups, it is worth studying whether the minimum wage policy can improve the quality of life for people. Research design, data and methodology: Using data from the 2015 and 2017 China General Social Survey (CGSS), this paper employs the logit model to estimate the probability of an individual's annual income being higher than the per capita disposable income of their province. It also utilizes the DID model to analyze the impact of minimum wage increases on individuals' annual incomes. Results: The analysis reveals that an overall increase in the minimum wage raises the probability of an individual's annual income exceeding the per capita disposable income by 3%. Among them, the probability increased by 2.2% for males and by 3.2% for females. Furthermore, the impact of the minimum wage on annual income varies depending on the individual's income level. Notably, the most positive and significant impact is observed for individuals whose income level is close to the minimum wage standard. Conclusions: This provides evidence that the increase in the minimum wage has effectively improved the quality of life for the population.

  • This study is aimed to analysis the fishery consciousness of the fishermen in Kyungbuk province. an issue for the study may be used on activating device of fisheries high school. So, the data were collected from a fishermen living at the city of Pohang in Kyungbuk province. The treatment of materials are classified by age, level of a school career and by working career. This research evaluated percentage to the frequency of responses to each question and carried out $\chi^2$. The statistically signigicant level account for p<.05 and made use of SPSS 10.0. The conclusion of study were as follows; First, fishermen have little understanding for fishery consciousness, therefore there was needed public activities and life long education. Second, in order to solve the difficulties of fisheries villages, governmental financial support have to be presented, It is showed that economically, culturally, and financially, govermental policy should be devised for the purpose of emerging from backwardness of fisheries villages. Third, large portions of economic value should be allocated to fisheries villages by improving fisheries structure. Actually, lower incomes haves have burdened fisheries villagers with more debts. More years of being engaged in fisheries have resulted in more debts. People in fisheries villages regarded incomes as the most important among factors in their selecting fisheries as a job. If they earned more money in fisheries village than in metropolises, people on fisheries villages would choose the fisheries an their jobs. Naturally, there will prove to be an increase of number of persons engaged in fisheries. Also, thinking of fisheries as dangerous and heavy should be corrected into the new image by improving work environments and mechanization.

  • When it comes to the development of a retail market, it has not only influenced the supply and sales of seafood, but it has also led to considerable changes in consumers' purchasing behavior and purchasing purposes. As consumers' incomes and lifestyles have improved, the tendency to purchase seafood has rapidly changed. In addition, the increase in two-income family incomes that resulted from women's active participation in society has increased the number of consumers purchasing home meal replacements (HMR) or convenience food rather than original food. With these changes in social-economic background and in consumers' needs, the purchase of seafood is gradually changing. As a result, companies are constructing diverse marketing strategies to satisfy their needs. Companies' marketing strategies have an immediate and vital effect on consumers' purchases of seafood. The most important and fundamental role is providing an opportunity for consumers to choose what to buy by being giving information and knowledge. In this paper, the purchasing behavior of consumers buying seafood will be examined with respect to their knowledge. First, which factors among a diverse range of marketing strategies exerted a significant impact on consumers' objectives and subjective knowledge was examined. Second, the study investigated which knowledge factors were important in influencing attitudes and purchasing purposes based on knowledge level. By comparing and analyzing factors related to consumers' knowledge with respect to seafood purchases, information is provided to inform companies about efficient strategies for marketing tactics.
