The effect of the surface treatments on the high temperature properties of the Inconel 617, one of the promising candidate alloys for high temperature heat-transport system, has been studied. Various surface modification methods including a rapid thermal process(RTP), a hydrothermal treatment, and a physical vapor deposition($2{\mu}m$ thick TiAlN film by an arc discharge) were applied to the Inconel 617. The morphological and the structural properties of the surface-modified Inconel 617 samples after heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ in the air were compared to find out whether inhomogeneous formation of $Cr_2O_3$ crust at the surface region was suppressed or not. TiAlN-coated Inconel 617 showed homogeneous microstructure and the lowest wear loss compared to bare, RTP- and hydrothermally-treated Inconel 617 by suppressing the $Cr_2O_3$ crust formation.

TiCrN layers (Ti : Cr = 20 : 80 and 5 : 95 wt%) were deposited on Inconel 617 and the effect of TiCrN coating on the high temperature stability of Inconel 617 up to $1000^{\circ}C$ was examined. XRD analysis and microstructural observation showed that vigorous and inhomogenous Cr diffusion to the surface was suppressed by TiCrN layer compare to the uncoated Inconel 617. This led to a distinctive enhancement in thermal oxidation resistance of Inconel 617.

Low cycle fatigue tests are performed on the Inconel 617 that be used for a hot gas casing. The relation between strain energy density and numbers of cycles to failure is examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of Inconel 617. The life predicted by the strain energy method is found to coincide with experimental data and results obtained from the Coffin-Manson method. Also the cyclic behavior of Inconel 617 is characterized by cyclic hardening with increasing number of cycle at room temperature.

Inconel 617 is a solid solution, nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy with an exceptional combination of high temperature strength and oxidation resistance. The combination of high strenth and oxidation resistance at temperatures over $1800^{\circ}F$ makes Inconel 617 an attractive material for such components as ducting, transition liners in both aircraft and gas turbine. In this study, the weldability and weldment characteristics of Inconel 617 are considered in GTAW associated with the two welding current and with back shielding gas using or not. After GTAW with 120A and 150A current, microstructures and hardness test, bending test, tensile test on room and elevated temperature for the determination of optical welding condition.
For the conversion into hydrogen society, not only studying facilities of hydrogen production, storage, transportation and charging system but also developing technique of ensuring safety are essentially needed. Hence, for the first step of that, evaluated the hydrogen embrittlement of Inconel alloy 617, Ni-based super heat-resisting alloy, by small punch test. Prepared the various specimens through changing electrochemical charging time and measured the toughness degradation of the specimens by small-punch test. The analysis of hydrogen embrittlement behavior were carried out by investigating the fractured surface of specimens. This study has significance on revealing mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement behavior and the factor affecting hydrogen embrittlement in the future study.

Inconel 617 is a candidate tube material for high temperature gas-cooled reactors(HTGR). The microstructure and mechanical properties of Inconel 617 were studied after exposure at high temperature($1050^{\circ}C$). The dominant oxide layer was Cr-oxide. The internal oxide and Cr-depleted region were observed below the Cr-oxide layer. The depth of Cr-depleted zone and internal oxide increased with exposure time. The major phases of carbides are $M_{23}C_6\;and\;M_6C$. The composition of $M_{23}C_6\;and\;M_6C$ were determined to be Cr-rich and Mo-rich, respectively. $M_6C$ carbide is more stable than $M_{23}C_6$ at high temperature. From the results of high temperature compression test, there were no significant changes in hardness and yield strength upon increasing exposure time.
In this paper, notched bar tensile tests of Inconel 617 were performed at room ($20^{\circ}C$) and elevated ($800^{\circ}C$) temperature. Finite element analyses are also performed. It is found that, at the room temperature, smooth bar tensile test results could be used to simulate notched bar tensile tests. However, at the elevated temperature, notched bar tensile test results can not be simulated from smooth bar tensile test results. Metallurgical examination reveals that strength weakening results from many cavities over the specimens for smooth bar test at the elevated temperature. "True" tensile properties at the elevated temperature is found using FE simulations. It also suggests that cautious should be taken to determine tensile properties of Inconel 617 at elevated temperatures using smooth bar tests.

Recently, the heat exchangers are requiring higher performance and reliability since they are being used under the operating condition of high temperature and pressure. To satisfy these requirements, we need special materials and bonding technology. This study presents a manufacturing technology for high temperature and high pressure micro channel heat exchanger using Inconel 617. The bonding performance for diffusion bonded heat exchanger was examined and analyzed. The analysis were conducted by measuring thermal and mechanical properties such as thermal diffusivity and tensile strength, and parametric studies about bonding temperature and pressing force were also carried out. The results provided insight for bonding evaluation and the bonding condition of $1200^{\circ}C$, and 50 tons was found to be suitable for this heat exchanger. From the results, we were able to establish the base technology for the manufacturing of Inconel 617 heat exchanger through the application of the diffusion bonding.
