The Scavenger Effects of Various Antioxidants in Cigarette Filters on the Free Radicals in Mainstream Smoke

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of additives (antioxidants for free radicals reduction) in cigarette filter treated with various antioxidants (three types of proanthocyanidins and ascorbic acid) and various concentrations of ascorbic acid and loaded with activated carbon on the delivery of free radicals of mainstream smoke (MS) by ESR. Also, we analyzed Hoffmann's analytes andscavenger activity according to the storage time and in vitro cytotoxicity. The analysis of spin number of vapor and particulate phase free radicals in MS are decreased to $14{\sim}24\;%$ and $16{\sim}40\;%$, respectively. As aresult of antioxidant potential for inactivity of vapor and particulate phase free radicals, natural antioxidants were more effective than ascorbic acid. Based on the result of the analysis of Hoffmann's analytes for various antioxidantstreated cigarette filters during the smoking, cigarette filter treated with ascorbic acid showed the lower amount of the deliveries of hydroquinone, isoprene and quinoline in MS than those treated with the other antioxidants. In the significant t-test on the difference of the cytotoxicity among the various antioxidants treated-cigarette filters, there are no significant differences at the 95 % confidence level. Those results indicated that the antioxidants were useful for reducing free radicals in MS because of the fast reaction between antioxidant and free radicals.

  • 1. 우측(右側) 수지(手指) 3-4지에 $2.0{\times}2.0cm$의 수포와 $6.0{\times}4.0cm$의 발적(發赤)이 형성된 2도 화상의 환자를 5회의 환부자침(患部刺鍼)만으로(총 11일) 흉터 없이 완치되는 효과를 얻었다. 2. 피부 손상의 경우, 환부주위(患部周圍)에 자침(刺鍼)하여 십이피부(十二皮膚)의 기혈(氣血)소통을 원활히 해주면 우수한 치료효과가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 욕창(褥瘡)이나 창상(創傷)등에서도 훌륭한 치료 효과가 기대된다. 2. 화상의 정도가 심한 경우는 사순청양음(四順淸凉飮) 같은 청열해독작용(淸熱解毒作用)과 통리대소편(通利大小便)하는 처방을 사용 하여 내외동치(內外同治)하면 효과가 극대화되리라고 사료된다.

Effect of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 on bisphosphonate-treated osteoblasts

  • Objectives: Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a side effect of bisphophonate therapy that has been reported in recent years. Osteoclastic inactivity by bisphosphonate is the known cause of BRONJ. Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) plays an important role in the development of bone. Recombinant human BMP-2 (rhBMP-2) is potentially useful as an activation factor for bone repair. We hypothesized that rhBMP-2 would enhance the osteoclast-osteoblast interaction related to bone remodeling. Materials and Methods: Human fetal osteoblast cells (hFOB 1.19) were treated with $100{\mu}M$ alendronate, and 100 ng/mL rhBMP-2 was added. Cells were incubated for a further 48 hours, and cell viability was measured using an MTT assay. Expression of the three cytokines from osteoblasts, receptor activator of nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), and macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF), were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Cell viability was decreased to $82.75%{\pm}1.00%$ by alendronate and then increased to $110.43%{\pm}1.35%$ after treatment with rhBMP-2 (P<0.05, respectively). OPG, RANKL, and M-CSF expression were all decreased by alendronate treatment. RANKL and M-CSF expression were increased, but OPG was not significantly affected by rhBMP-2. Conclusion: rhBMP2 does not affect OPG gene expression in hFOB, but it may increase RANKL and M-CSF gene expression.

  • Construction industry is an important key industry and many measures to revitalize it as local economy has been stagnant. However, construction industry works combined with governmental policies, global and local economies, populations, construction companies and many other related factors, and it is very hard for those counter-plans to meet every need and goal of the related. In this study, interviews and questionnaires of the professionals of the construction industry in Busan, were carried out, to find the cause of the inactivity of the construction market, the problems of the policies and regulations, and the problems of the construction companies in Busan and the solutions were suggested. The realistic master-plans and the reduction of the cost price for the problems of the redevelopment business having no feasibility, the reasonable relaxation of the restrictions for the problems of the governmental policies, the professional training and education for the lack of the high-quality human resources and the working system changes for the problems of the local construction companies turned out as results. The results of the study will be a chance to understand the different ideas of the professionals, and help with the plans to improve and to revitalize the local construction industry.   • 미생물 합성 고분자인 poly(hydroxylalkanoate)s (PHAs)의 초기효소분해는 표면침식의 메커니즘으로 진행하므로 이들의 분해거동은 표면특성을 개질로서 조절할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 효소분해속도를 조절하기 위하여 플라즈마 기법을 PHAs 표면특성의 개질에 적용하였다. $CF_3H$$O_2$ 플라즈마를 사용하여 재료 표면에 각각 소수성 및 친수성을 부여하였다. 효소분해 실험은 pH 7.4의 0.1 M potassium phosphate 완충용액에서 Alcaligenes facalis T1에서 정제된 poly(hydroxybutyrate) 분해효소를 첨가하여 행하였다. $CF_3H$ 플라즈마 처리된 시편의 경우 표면 층의 불소화에 따른 소수성의 증가와 분해 효소에 대한 비활성으로 초기분해 속도가 상당히 지연됨을 관찰하였으나 $O_2$ 플라즈마 처리에 의한 표면 친수성은 분해속도의 촉진 등에 큰 영향을 미치지 않았다.

흰쥐의 불용성 근위축에 양릉천 자침이 미치는 효과 (The Effects of Acupuncture at GB34 on Disuse Muscle Atrophy in Rats)

  • Objectives Disuse muscle atrophy occurs in response to pathologies such as joint immobilization, inactivity or bed rest. Muscle disuse is accompanied by an increase in apoptotic signaling, which mediates some of the responses to unloading in the muscle. GB34 (Yanglingquan) is a acupuncture point on the lower leg and one of the most frequently used points in various skeletomuscular diseases. In this study, the hypothesis that the acupuncture at GB34 could attenuate immobilization-induced skeletal muscle atrophy was tested. Methods The left hindlimb immobilization was performed with casting tape in both GB34 group (n=10) and Control group (n=10). The rats in GB34 group were daily treated with acupuncture at GB34. After 2 weeks of immobilization, the morphology of right and left gastrocnemius muscles in both GB34 and Control groups were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin staining. To investigate the immobilization-induced muscular apoptosis, the immunohistochemical analysis of Bax and Bcl-2 was carried out. Results GB34 group represented the significant protective effects against the reductions of the left gastrocnemius muscles weight and average cross section area to compared with Control group. The acupuncture at GB34 significantly reduced the immunoreactivity of BAX and increased the immunoreactivity of Bcl-2 in gastrocnemius muscle compared with Control group. Conclusions These results suggest that the acupuncture at GB34 has protective effects against immobilization-induced muscle atrophy by regulating the activities of apoptosis-associated BAX/Bcl-2 proteins in gastrocnemius muscle.

간헐폭기법에 의한 돈사 폐수 처리에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Treatment of Swine Wastewater by Using Intermittently Aerated Activated Sludge Process)

  • In this study, an intermittently aerated activated sludge process, modified process from conventional activated sludge process, was developed to treat high strength swine wastewater, which has been blamed as major pollutant for stream pollution. Therefore, the optimum cycle for oxic and anoxic period, SRT, and OLR were studied as design parameters. The effects of different time interval for oxic and anoxic period on nitrification and denitrification were examined by operating two reactors with 60/60min and 60/90min as oxic/anoxic period. Although the reactor with 60/60min showed complete denitrification of $NO_x-N$ generated during oxic period, the reactor with 60/90min showed incomplete nitrification due to the inactivity of nitrifier by accumulated $NH_3-N$ toxicity during anoxic period. Therefore, it is recommended to operate same interval for oxic and anoxic period. In order to determine the optimum cycle for oxic/anoxic period, four different reactors with 30/30, 60/60, 90/90 and 120/120min were examined. The reactor operation with 90/90min was optimum to get the most stable results in this study. However, the optimum cycle for oxic and anoxic period should be changed with characteristics of influent wastewater and operating conditions. According to lie operation results of three reactors with SRT of 15, 20 and 30days. The reactor with 2Odays SRT showed best removal efficiency of T-N. The optimum OLR would be $2.5Kg\;COD/m^3/day$ which showed the most stable nitrification and denitrification. Since characteristics of influent wastewater in the real system has a severe fluctuation, so it is very difficult to determine each interval for oxic and anoxic period. Therefore, ORP curves, describing the change of oxidation/reduction potential in reactor, can be used as a control parameter for automatic control of oxic and anoxic period. In other words, bending point (Nitrate Knee) of ORP curve during anoxic period could be used as a starting point of oxic period.

  • In order to establish the manifestational symptoms in men and women and highly frequent symptoms(HFS) of deficiency of Qi and blood(氣虛, 血虛), stagnation of Qi(氣滯), deficiency of Yin(陰虛), deficiency of Yang(陽虛), and, 546 questionaires were analyzed through Cronbach alpha value and Pearson's correlative efficient. Symptomatic differences of male and female specimens were as follows. HFS of Qi deficiency were similar in terms of inactivity like mental and physical fatigue, enervation in men and women. In blood deficiency, dizziness and light sleep were common in men and women, but mucosal symptoms of conjunctiva, lip, nail bed were more frequent in women than men. Emotional explosion was common in Qi stagnation, then women had more motivation-related symptoms than men. Inner heat was frequently arisen in Yin deficiency in both, and the heat was expressed more common in exterior and upper part in women but in interior abdominal part in men. In Yang deficiency, main symptoms of men were feeling coldness in peripheral, but Qi deficiency symptoms were more common in women former than coldness.

Impact of Individual and Combined Health Behaviors on All Causes of Premature Mortality Among Middle Aged Men in Korea: The Seoul Male Cohort Study

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate and quantify the risk of both individual and combined health behaviors on premature mortality in middle aged men in Korea. Methods: In total, 14 533 male subjects 40 to 59 years of age were recruited. At enrollment, subjects completed a baseline questionnaire, which included information about socio-demographic factors, past medical history, and life style. During the follow-up period from 1993 to 2008, we identified 990 all-cause premature deaths using national death certificates. A Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) of each health risk behavior, which included smoking, drinking, physical inactivity, and lack of sleep hours. Using the Cox model, each health behavior was assigned a risk score proportional to its regression coefficient value. Health risk scores were calculated for each patient and the HR of all-cause premature mortality was calculated according to risk score. Results: Current smoking and drinking, high body mass index, less sleep hours, and less education were significantly associated with all-cause premature mortality, while regular exercise was associated with a reduced risk. When combined by health risk score, there was a strong trend for increased mortality risk with increased score (p-trend < 0.01). When compared with the 1-9 score group, HRs of the 10-19 and 20-28 score groups were 2.58 (95% confidence intervals [CIs], 2.19 to 3.03) and 7.09 (95% CIs, 5.21 to 9.66), respectively. Conclusions: Modifiable risk factors, such as smoking, drinking, and regular exercise, have considerable impact on premature mortality and should be assessed in combination.

아동 비만의 예방 및 치료를 위한 운동 전략 (Exercise Strategies for the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity in Children)

  • 전 세계적으로 비만 인구는 증가 추세에 있고 그중 소아 청소년의 비만 유병률이 급속한 증가 추세에 있다. 소아 청소년 비만은 성인비만으로 이어지며 당뇨병, 고지혈증, 고혈압, 대사증후군과 같은 만성질환을 동반하는 것으로 알려진다. 소아 청소년의 비만은 체력, 신체활동, 좌식생활의 증가 및 서구화된 식이 습관과 같은 생활습관과 밀접한 관련이 있다. 따라서 균형 잡힌 식이습관과 유산소성 운동 그리고 적절한 저항성 운동을 개입시키고 좌식시간을 수정하는 것이 비만 치료에 권고된다. 본 미니 종설에서는 소아 청소년 비만 치료에 효과적인 수단으로써 다각적인 신체활동 전략에 대해 고찰하였다.
