  • To complement the method of field-scale seismic ground motion simulations by buried blast techniques, the application and evaluation of the capability of a numerical modeling platform to simulate buried explosion-induced ground motion at a real soil site is presented in this paper. Upon a layout of the experimental setup at a level site wherein multiple charges that were buried over a large-diameter circle and detonated in a planned sequence, the formulation of a numerical model of the soil and the explosives using the finite element code LS-DYNA is developed for the evaluation of the resulting ground motion and surface subsidence. With a compact elastoplastic cap model calibrated for the loess soils on the basis of the site and laboratory test program, numerical solutions are obtained by explicit time integration for various dynamic aspects and their relation with the field blast experiment. Quantitative comparison of the computed ground acceleration time histories at different locations and induced spatial subsidence on the surface afterwards is given for further engineering insights in regard to the capabilities and limitations of both the numerical and experimental approaches.

  • There always exists uncertainty which is mainly due to uncertainty of the evaluation of a geotechnical structure at a site. The uncertainty in the geotechnical analysis can be considered in the probabilistic analysis using the Monte Carlo Simulation. It needs various soil profiles which could be possible at the target site. In this study, a new method is proposed to generate soil profiles which are probable at the site. The proposed method analyzes a structure of a site and generates one dimensional soil profiles for a probabilistic analysis. Through the field application, the applicability of the prosed method was shown.

  • The evaluation of the seismic hazard for a given site is to estimate the seismic ground motion at the surface. This is the result of the combination of the action of the seismic source, which generates seismic waves, the propagation of these waves between the source and the site, and site local conditions. The aim of this work is to evaluate the sensitivity of dynamic response of extended structures to spatial variable ground motions (SVGM). All factors of spatial variability of ground motion are considered, especially local site effect. In this paper, a method is presented to simulate spatially varying earthquake ground motions. The scheme for generating spatially varying ground motions is established for spatial locations on the ground surface with varying site conditions. In this proposed method, two steps are necessary. Firstly, the base rock motions are assumed to have the same intensity and are modelled with a filtered Tajimi-Kanai power spectral density function. An empirical coherency loss model is used to define spatial variable seismic ground motions at the base rock. In the second step, power spectral density function of ground motion on surface is derived by considering site amplification effect based on the one dimensional seismic wave propagation theory. Several dynamics analysis of a curved viaduct to various cases of spatially varying seismic ground motions are performed. For comparison, responses to uniform ground motion, to spatial ground motions without considering local site effect, to spatial ground motions with considering coherency loss, phase delay and local site effects are also calculated. The results showed that the generated seismic signals are strongly conditioned by the local site effect. In the same sense, the dynamic response of the viaduct is very sensitive of the variation of local geological conditions of the site. The effect of neglecting local site effect in dynamic analysis gives rise to a significant underestimation of the seismic demand of the structure.

  • The Seismic probabilistic risk assessment (SPRA) or seismic margin assessment (SMA) have been used for the seismic safety evaluation of nuclear power plant structures and equipments. For the SPRA or SMA, the reference response spectrum should be defined. The site-specific median spectrum has been generally used for the seismic fragility analysis of structures and equipments in a Korean nuclear power plant Since the site-specific spectrum has been developed based on the peak ground motion parameter, the site-specific response spectrum does not represent the same probability of exceedance over the entire frequency range of interest. The uniform hazard spectrum is more appropriate to be used in seismic probabilistic risk assessment than the site- specific spectrum. A method for modifying the seismic fragility parameters that are calculated based on the site-specific median spectrum is described. This simple method was developed to incorporate the effects of the uniform hazard spectrum. The seismic fragility parameters of typical NPP components are modified using the uniform hazard spectrum. The modification factor is used to modify the original fragility parameters. An example uniform hazard spectrum is developed using the available seismic hazard data for the Korean nuclear power plant (NPP) site. This uniform hazard spectrum is used for the modification of fragility parameters.

  • Recently, The surface-wave method has widely been used for the site investigation due to the economic advantage and the improved reliability. The typical surface-wave methods currently available are SASW method, MASW method and CSW method. The CSW method has a potential of high-quality measurement, but its inherent problems limited its use to the special cases such as the compaction-quality control. The CSW method uses the steady-state harmonic vibration for the seismic source as in the steady-state Rayleigh-wave method, which is superior to the impact source used for other methods. This study proposed a new procedure to solve the inherent problems of the CSW method and to improve the reliability of the CSW measurements. To verify the validity of the proposed in this study, the SASW results were compared with the CSW results for the numerical simulation of the CSW testing. Also, the feasibility of the proposed method was verified using the field measurements at a geotechnical site.

  • A recently developed methods for on-site calibration of the current transformer (CT) comparator system have been reviewed in the paper. The method utilizes several traveling standards, which consist of the CT, non-reactive standard resistors, wide ratio error CT, and shunt resistors. The traveling CT is used for absolute evaluation of a standard CT belonging to industry. The non-reactive standard resistors and a wide ratio error CT are used for the linearity check of errors in the current comparator. The shunt resistors are used for evaluation of CT burden of industry.

  • The evaluation of shear modulus (or shear wave velocity) profile of the site is very important in various fields of geotechnical engineering. In the field, there exist spatial variations of shear modulus that case uncertainty in the geotechnical analysis or design. So it is necessary to evaluate the spatial variation of shear wave velocities of the soil site. In this study, the HWAW method is applied to the determination of a 3-D Vs map of soil site. The HWAW method, which is based on harmonic wavelet transforms, has been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. The HWAW method uses only the signal portion of the maximum local signal/noise ratio to evaluate the phase velocity in order to minimize the effect of the noise. The field testing of this method is relatively simple and fast because only one experimental setup, which consists of one pair of receivers on the surface, is needed using a short receiver spacing setup (1~3m). These characteristics make it possible to determine detailed local Vs profile in the site with lateral Vs variation and to evaluate 3-D Vs map by performing a series of tests on the grid. To estimate the applicability of the proposed method, field tests were performed. Through field applications validity and applicability of the proposed method were verified.

  • In GIS-based Spatial Decision-making Support System (SDSS), the Boolean logic by conventional simple overlay method contains two problems. One is losing lots of information in analysis process, the other is unable to reflect of weighting values between evaluated items. Therefore, evaluation system as Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) needs to improve these problems effectively. The purpose of this study is to provide the benefit of AHP method and GIS spatial analysis in site analysis for crop cultivation. First, the weighting value of AHP for topography, distribution grade of water, property of soil and slope items are evaluated throughout survey to experts of soil, crop and agricultural management fields. On the basis of these weighting value of AHP by items, site suitability analysis for black raspberry cultivation is performed. To estimate the benefit of AHP method, the current cultivating map of black raspberry is constructed in Ssangchi-myeon district. In comparison with site analysis of Boolean logic, site analysis of AHP method shows more realistic.

  • As the number of customers who write fake reviews is increasing, online shopping sites have difficulty in providing reliable reviews. Fake reviews are called review spam, and they are written to promote or defame the product. They directly affect sales volume of the product; therefore, it is important to detect review spam. Review spam detection methods suggested in prior researches were only based on an international site even though review spam is a widespread problem in domestic shopping sites. In this paper, we have presented new review features of the domestic shopping site NAVER, and we have applied the formerly introduced method to this site for performing an evaluation.
