  • Usually, cloud storage systems are developed based on DFS (Distributed File System) for scalability and reliability reasons. DFSs are designed to improve throughput than IO response time, and therefore, they are appropriate for batch processing jobs. Recently, cloud storage systems have been used for update intensive applications such as OLTP and so on. However, in DFSs, in-place update operations are not carefully considered. Therefore, when updates are frequent, I/O performance of DFSs are degraded significantly. DFSs with RAID techniques have been proposed to improve their performance and reliability. Their performance degradation caused by frequent update operations can be more significant. In this paper, we propose an in-place update method for DFS RAID exploiting a differential logging technique. The proposed method reduces the I/O costs, network traffic and XOR operation costs for RAID. We demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed in-place update method through various experiments.

  • In this paper, we introduce a structural redundancy method. It reduces the query processing cost incurred when reconfiguring an XML document from divided XML data in shredding XML documents into relations. The fundamental idea is that query performance can be enhanced by analyzing query patterns and replicating data essential for the query performance. For the practical and effective structural redundancy, we analyzed three types of ID, VALUE, and SUBTREE replication. In addition, if given XML data and queries are very large and complex, it can be very difficult to search optimal redundancy set. Therefore, a heuristic search method is introduced in this paper. Finally, XML query processing cost arising by employing the structural redundancy, and the efficiency of proposed search method arc analyzed experimentally It is manifest that XML read query is performed more quick]y but XML update query is performed more slowly due to the additional update consistency cost for replicas. However, experimental results showed that in-place ID replication is useful even in having excessive update cost. It was also observed that multiple-place SUBTREE replication can enhance read query performance remarkably if only update cost is not excessive.

  • Flash Memory differs from the hard disk, because it cannot be overwritten. Most of the flash memory file systems use not-in-place update mechanisms for the update. Flash memory file systems execute sometimes block cleaning process in order to make writable space while performing not-in-place update process. Block cleaning process collects the invalid pages and convert them into the free pages. Block cleaning process is a factor that affects directly on the performance of the flash memory. Thus this paper suggests the efficient page allocation method, which reduces block cleaning cost by minimizing the numbers of block that has valid and invalid pages at a time. The result of the simulation shows an increase in efficiency by reducing more block cleaning costs than the original YAFFS.

  • In this paper, we present a comcurrency control scheme over the index structure in main memory databases using multiversion mechanism, and implement it on T-tree. As a well-known idea for comcurrency control, multiversion allows multiple transactions to reat and write different versions of the same data item, each transaction sees a consistent set of versions for all the data items it accesses[1]. Logical versioning and physical versioning techniques are used to keep versions of data item and versions of index node respectively. The main features of this multiversion indexing approach are (1)update operations and rotations on T-tree can take place concurrently, (2)the number of locking and latching requirement is sharply reduced because read-only transactions do not obtain any locks or latches and update transactions obtain latches only when actually performing the update, (3)it reduces storage overhead for tracking version and reclaims storage in time, and (4)it provides complete isolation of read-only transactions from update transactions, so the read-only transactions can get response information without any block.

  • NAND flash memory has unique characteristics like as 'out-place-update' and limited lifetime compared with traditional storage systems. According to out-of-place update scheme, a number of invalid (or called dead) pages can be generated. In this case, garbage collection is needed to reclaim invalid pages. Because garbage collection results in not only erase operations but also copy operations of valid (or called live) pages to other blocks, many garbage collection techniques have proposed to reduce the overhead and to increase the lifetime of NAND Flash systems. This techniques sometimes select victim blocks including cold data for the wear leveling. However, most of them overlook the cost of selecting victim blocks including cold data. In this paper, we propose a garbage collection technique named CAPi (Cost Age with Proportion of invalid pages). Considering the additional overhead of what to select victim blocks including cold data, CAPi improves the response time in garbage collection and increase the lifetime in memory systems. Additionally, the proposed scheme also improves the efficiency of garbage collection by separating cold data from hot data in valid pages. In experimental evaluation, we showed that CAPi yields up to, at maximum, 73% improvement in lifetime compared with existing garbage collections.

  • A storage device used in the mobile computing field should have low power, light weight, durability, etc., and should be able to effectively store and manage large-capacity data generated by users. NAND flash memory is mainly used as a storage device in the field of mobile computing. Due to the structural characteristics of NAND flash memory, it is impossible to overwrite in place when a data update request is made, so it can be solved by accurately separating requests that frequently request data update and requests that do not, and storing and managing them in each block. The classification method for such a data update request is called a hot data identification method, and various studies have been conducted at present. This paper continuously records the occurrence of data update requests using a counting filter for more accurate hot data validation, and also verifies hot data by considering how often the requested update requests occur during a specific time.

  • NAND flash systems require deletion operation and do not support in-place update, so the storage systems should use Flash Translation Layer (FTL). However, there are a lot of memory consumptions using mapping table in the FTL, so recently, many studies have been proposed to resolve mapping table overhead. These studies try to solve update propagation problem in the nand flash system which does not use mapping table. In this paper, we present a novel index structure, called CL-Tree(Cache List Tree), to solve the update propagation problem. The proposed index structure reduces write operations which occur for an update propagation, and it has a good performance for search operation because it uses multi-list structure. In experimental evaluation, we show that our scheme yields about 173% and 179% improvement in insertion speed and search speed, respectively, compared to traditional B+tree and other works.

  • Indoor POI data, an essential component of indoor spatial data, has attribute information of a specific place in the room and is the most critical information necessary for the user. Currently, indoor POI data is manually updated by direct investigation, which is expensive and time-consuming. Recently, research on updating POI using the attribute information of indoor photographs has been advanced to overcome these problems. However, the range of use, such as using only photographs with text information, is limited. Therefore, in this study, and to improvement this, I proposed a new method to update indoor POI data using a smartphone camera. In the proposed method, the POI name is obtained by classifying the indoor scene's photograph into artificial intelligence technology CNN and matching the location criteria to indoor spatial data through AR technology. As a result of creating and experimenting with a prototype application to evaluate the proposed method, it was possible to update POI data that reflects the real world with high accuracy. Therefore, the results of this study can be used as a complement or substitute for the existing methodologies that have been advanced mainly by direct research.

  • LTE/SAE has presented the handover key management to revoke the compromised keys and to isolate corrupted network devices. In this paper, we identify that the handover key management is vulnerable to so-called de-synchronization attacks, which is jeopardizing the forward secrecy of handover key management. We place an emphasis on periodic root key update to minimize the effect of the de-synchronization attacks. An optimal value for the root key update interval is suggested in order to minimize signaling load and ensure security of user traffic.
