  • In this paper, the characteristics of excessive horizontal stress components in Korea were studied using more than five hundred measured data set of in-situ hydraulic fracturing test. Based on the in-situ testing data, the magnitude and orientation of the horizontal stress component and variation of stress ratio (K) with depth were investigated. And also horizontal stress magnitude versus depth relationships and distribution limits of stress ratio components were suggested. For the depth less than 310 m in the entire territory, the stress ratio has a tendency to diminish and stabilize with depth, but fur some areas, it was revealed that the excessive horizontal stress fields with stress ratio close to 3.0 below 200 m in depth have formed. The results from the investigation of excessive horizontal stress regions showed that there existed several regions where the localized excessive horizontal stress was big enough to potentially induce brittle failure around the openings at less than 300 m in depth.

  • On the flow of groundwater, the effect of consecutive column-wall in underground as a hydraulic barrier could be identified by conventional geotechnical methods ((1)visualiy identification of wall mass after underground excavating, (2)uniaxial compressive strength test for core of wall mass in underground, (3)in-situ permeability test in the hole after coring wall mass). However, for the cut off the leakage or infiltration of very high concentrated leachate from the waste landfill or the contaminated groundwater, the waterproof effect of consecutive column-wall in underground should be verified more objectively, by in-situ measuring of pH, temperature and salinity. and by evaluating of their consistency and similarity throughout analyzing the characteristics of basic components and their profiles through the series of chemical experiments. Furthermore, its waterproof effect could be verified additionally throughout deciding the similarity more simply by comparing the general distribution patterns including the difference of high and low peaks from the chromatograms using GC-MS for surrounding groundwater.

  • Recently, the interests on economical nitrogen removal from wastewater are growing. As a method of the novel nitrogen removal technology, nitrogen removal via nitrite pathway by selective inhibition of free ammonia and free nitrous acid on nitrite oxidizing bacteria have been intensively studied. The inhibition effects of free ammonia and free nitrous acid are low when domestic wastewater is used, however, because of its relatively lower nitrogen concentration than the wastewater from industry and landfill, etc. In this study, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is proposed for nitrogen removal to investigate the effect of the low nitrogen concentration on nitrite accumulation. Nitrification efficiency reached almost 100% during the aerobic cycle and the maximum specific nitrification rate ($V_{max,nit}$) reached $17.8mg\;NH_4{^+}-N/g\;MLVSS{\bullet}h$. During the anoxic cycle, average denitrification efficiency reached 87% and the maximum specific denitrification rate ($V_{max,den}$) reached $9.8mg\;NO_3{^-}-N/g\;MLVSS{\bullet}h$. From the analysis the main reason of nitrite accumulation in the SBR was free nitrous acid rather than free ammonia. Nitrite accumulation increased with the decrease of organic content in the wastewater and the mechanism is not well understood yet. From the result of fluorescent in situ hybridization, the distribution of nitrite oxidizing bacteria was in equilibrium with ammonium oxidizing bacteria when nitrite accumulation did not occur.

  • xBrassicoraphanus line BB#5, a new synthetic intergeneric hybrid between Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis and Raphanus sativus L. var. rafiphera induced by N-methyl-N-nitroso-urethane mutagenesis in microspore culture, shows high seed fertility and morphological uniformity. Dual-color fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using 5S and 45S rDNA probes and genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) using B. rapa genomic DNA probe were carried out to analyze the chromosome composition and the meiosis pairing pattern compared to its parental lines. The somatic chromosome complement is 2n = 38, which consists of 17 metacentric and two submetacentric chromosomes with lengths of 2.18 to $5.01{\mu}m$. FISH karyotype analysis showed five and eight pairs of 5S and 45S rDNA loci. GISH meiosis pairing analysis showed that 19 complete bivalents were most frequent and accounted for 42% of the 100 pollen mother cells examined. Based on chromosome number, size, morphology, rDNA distribution, and meiosis pairing pattern, both parental genomes of B. rapa and R. sativus appear to exist in xBrassicoraphanus line BB#5, demonstrating its genome integrity. Such stable chromosome constitutions and meiotic pairing patterns in somatic and meiotic cells are very rare in natural and synthetic intergeneric hybrids. Chromosomal studies and genetic and phenotypic changes in allopolyploids a re discussed. The results p resented h erein will b e usef ul f or f urther g enomic s tudy o f xBrassicoraphanus lines and their improvement as promising new breeding varieties.

  • Objective: To investigate preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings associated with resection margin status in patients with invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) who underwent breast-conserving surgery. Materials and Methods: One hundred and one patients with ILC who underwent preoperative MRI were included. MRI (tumor size, multifocality, type of enhancing lesion, distribution of non-mass enhancement [NME], and degree of background parenchymal enhancement) and clinicopathological features (age, pathologic tumor size, presence of ductal carcinoma in situ [DCIS] or lobular carcinoma in situ, presence of lymph node metastases, and estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor/human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 status) were analyzed. A positive resection margin was defined as the presence of invasive cancer or DCIS at the inked surface. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine pre- and postoperative variables associated with positive resection margins. Results: Among the 101 patients, 21 (20.8%) showed positive resection margins. In the univariable analysis, NME, multifocality, axillary lymph node metastasis, and pathologic tumor size were associated with positive resection margins. With respect to preoperative MRI findings, multifocality (odds ratio [OR] = 3.977, p = 0.009) and NME (OR = 2.741, p = 0.063) were associated with positive resection margins in the multivariable analysis, although NME showed borderline significance. Conclusion: In patients with ILC, multifocality and the presence of NME on preoperative breast MRI were associated with positive resection margins.

  • Effective range of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction was studied by numerical analysis instead of empirical method. Numerical analyses were carried out with commercial FEM code, ABAQUS, and verified by comparing the numerical results with field tests of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction. Most of material properties were evaluated by data from laboratory and in-situ tests. Vertical effective range was estimated by distribution curve of plastic strain energy dissipated through soil layers under dynamic load and these results were in good agreement with field tests. Based on verification, the effects of governing properties of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction such as number of hit can be determined by numerical analyses. In addition, vertical effective range can also be determined by Menard's empirical equation using the external work at converging time of plastic strain energy in numerical analysis. This implies that the minimum energy of Hydraulic Hammer Compaction for improvement can be determined by Menard's equation.

  • Since it is not possible to generate spatially uniform particle distribution at low pressures in which in-situ particle monitors(ISPMs) are normally operated, it is of interest to investigate the response of an ISPM to particle beams at low pressures. The purpose of this study is to develop technique that can control the size of particle beams. In this study, particle beams were generated at low pressures by using identical aerodynamic lenses, and their shape and size were visualized by collecting uniform sized methylene blue aerosol particles on a filter media. It was found that the size of particle beams depends on the number of lens, the distance between lenses, and the downstream distance from the final lens. The size of particle beams decreases with increasing distance between lenses, and increases with increasing downstream distance from the final lens. The experimental results obtained in this work will be used to investigate performance of an ISPM at low pressures.

  • The Rate-of-Loading(ROL) effect of motor operated gate valves causes a decrease in the thrust delivered at a specific torque by the actuator under dynamic flow ${\Delta}$P conditions as compared to the no-flow, static conditions. This effect needs to be studied for the quantitative evaluation of motor operated gate valve operability. This study is performed to verify the validity for the application of ROL in the evaluation of operability of motor operated gate valves for the opening stroke. The ROL is assessed on the basis of in-situ test data for the opening and closing strokes. The results show that the distribution of the ROL for the operling sake has a tendency to the negative value when DP is higher than 150psid.

  • Present work aims to establish an integrated management system of environmental data base for nine typical wind holes or air holes in Korea. It basically deals with definition, geographical distribution, morphological pattern, physical characteristics and anthropogenic environments of wind hole to propose systematic preservation strategy of their periglacial landscape and flora, which are known to be sensitive to global warming. Wind hole, in which cool air blows out during the summer, but mild air comes out during the winter from a cave or hole, is frequently found on northwest- and north-facing slopes on the terminal point of steep talus, block field, and block stream, and can be categorized into three types, i.e., talus, cave and sink types. Environmental characteristics of nine wind holes are analyzed on the basis of their geology, landform, climate, soil, hydrology, vegetation, road, footpath, land-use, and management system, and relevant DB are prepared. Wind hole areas with unique landscape and ecological values need to be designated as a nature reserve, and zoning of core, buffer, and transitional zones are required for the multi-dimensional preservation of periglacial landscape and ecosystem. Phytogeographical values of glacial relict plants, including mountain cranberry(Vaccinium vitis-idaea) at its global southernmost limit at Bangnaeri wind hole, Hongchon County, Gangwon Province of Korea are discussed in detail as a floristic refugia in connection with climate change during the Pleistocene Epoch and potential in-situ and ex-situ preservation sites in the future.

  • This paper presents an experimental study of the effect of rolling speed and surface roughness on the mixed elastohydrodynamic (EHD) lubrication characteristics for point contact formed between a real, random, rough surface, steel ball and smooth glass disc. The Thin Film Colorimetic Interferometry measurement technique has been extended to give detailed information about in-contact deformation of the microgeometry. It has enabled to derive the amplitude reduction curve that shows progressive recovering of ball roughness features with increasing speed.
