  • Magnesium and its alloys are attractive as light weight structural/functional materials for high performance application in automobile and electronics industries due to their superior physical properties. In order to obtain high quality products manufactured by the magnesium powders, it is important to control and understand the densification behavior of the powders. The effect of the sheath surrounding the magnesium powders on the plastic deformation and densification behavior during equal channel angular pressing was investigated in the study by experimental and the finite element methods. A modified version of Lee-Kim's plastic yield criterion, notably known as the critical relative density model, was applied to simulate the densification behavior of magnesium powders. In addition, a new approach that extracts the mechanical characteristics of both the powder and the matrix was developed. The model was implemented into the finite element method, with which powder compaction under equal channel angular pressing was simulated.

  • A series of large-scale experiments were carried out in order to examine wave-induced liquefaction in a loosely packed sandbed, its afterward high densification and liquefaction by oscillatory pore pressure. The experiments were conducted in a Large Hydro-Geo Flume that can nearly solve the problems of scale effects of the sandbed, and the 50% sieve diameter of sand was 0.2 mm. The generation of residual pore pressure and its afterward high densification which had observed by Takahashi et al. (1999) in a wave flume experiment using fine sand with the size of 0.08 mm. As a result, the relative density of the sandbed after high densification was increased up to 79% and liquefaction by oscillatory pore pressure was not observed.

  • Effect of particle size of alumina and amount of talc on tape casting and densification behaviors of alumina-talc system were investigated. The pseudoplastic behaviors of slurries increased with increase in amount of talc addition and decrease in alumina particle size. In case of using coarse alumina powder, densification of specimens were accelerated with increase of sintering temperature and amount of talc addition. On the contrary, fine alumina powder retarded of rearrangement of alumina particle during liquid phase sintering due to premature densification of alumina matrix region before formation of liquid phase and then densification of specimens were suppressed with increase of sintering temperature and amount of talc addition.

  • In order to analyze the densification behaviour of stainless steel powder compacts during hot isostatic pressing (HIP) at elevated temperatures, a power-law creep constitutive model based on the plastic deformation theory for porous materials was applied to the densification. Various densification mechanisms including interparticle boundary diffusion, grain boundary diffusion and lattice diffusion mechanisms were incorporated in the constitutive model, as well. The power-law creep model in conjunction with various diffusion models was applied to the HIP process of 316L stainless steel powder compacts under 50 and 100 MPa at 1125 $!`\acute{\dot{E}}$. The results of the calculations were verified using literature data It could be found that the contribution of the diffusional mechanisms is not significant under the current process conditions.

  • The analytical method was developed to calculate efficiency of densifying carbon/carbon (C/C) composites using coal tar pitch as a matrix precursor at each cyle. Three factors were defined in analyzing the densification process: impregnation efficiency, retention efficiency, and overall densification efficiency. The relationships developed were applied to the experimental results for three densification cycles of C/C composites with pitches as an impregnant to evaluate the factors which may depend on the impregnant and on the route of carbonization. The impregnation efficiency increased with the repeated process cycles whereas the retention efficiency decreased irrespective of the impregnant and carbonization route. Carbonization route P+A+G, in which pressure carbonizationl (P) and graphitization (G) were done before after atmospheric pressure carboniztion (A) respectively, using impregnant of high carbon yields was the most effective method in densifying C/C composites.

  • Recently, the material industry in the world has started appreciating the value of new materials that can overcome the limitation of steel material. In particular, new materials are expected to play a very important role in the future industry, demonstrating superior performance compared to steel in lightweight materials and ability to maintain in high temperature environments. Carbon materials have recently increased in value due to excellent physical properties such as high strength and ultra lightweight compared to steel. However, they have not overcome the limitation of productivity and price. The carbon materials are classified into various composites depending on the purpose of use and the performance required. Typical composites include carbon-glass, carbon-carbon, and carbon-plastic composites. Among them, carbon-carbon composite technology is a necessary technology in aviation and space, and can be manufactured with high investment cost and technology. In this paper, in order to find the optimal conditions to achieve productivity improvement and cost reduction of carbon material densification process, the correlation between each process parameters and results of densification is first analyzed. The main process parameters of the densification process are selected by analyzing the correlation results. And then a certain linear relationship between major process variables and density of carbon materials is derived by performing a regression analysis based on the historical production result data. Using the derived casualty, the optimal management range of major process variables is suggested. Effective process operation through optimal management of variables will have a great effect on productivity improvement and manufacturing cost reduction by shortening the lead time.

  • Background: Pollination is an ecosystem service of utmost importance for agriculture. In this context, the study aimed to evaluate the pollination service of naturally occurring bees and after densification with colonies of stingless bees (Nannotrigona testceicornis and Tetragonisca angustula) in commercial strawberry plantation. The study was carried out in the four seasons of the year and under two experimental conditions: natural pollination (NP) and pollination under bee densification. The supply of flowers and bee density were estimated. For bee densification, four boxes of colonies of Iraí bees and four of Jataí bees were placed near the strawberry plantation. Five treatments were established for each condition, considering NP and pollination with bee densification on different days from flower anthesis, ranging from the 1st to the 5th day. Fruits were harvested, quantified, and submitted to evaluations to determine biometry, degree of deformity, and percentage of fertilized achenes. Results: There was a higher density in summer compared to other seasons in both conditions evaluated. The weight was greater (20.19 g) when fruits were pollinated on the first day after floral anthesis under pollination conditions with bee densification. It was observed that free pollination provided fruits with greater a greater of deformation of flowers on the fourth and fifth day after anthesis. However, when bee density became higher, the greatest degree of deformity was observed only in fifth-day fruits. The densification with stingless bees provided a 50% increase in the number of bees present on strawberry plants in summer and also a 15% increase in fruit weight and the occurrence of a lower degree of fruit deformity. Conclusions: Density with stingless bees provided a 50% increase in the number of bees present on strawberry plant in the summer, with an improvement in fruit quality and aggregate commercial value, providing a 15% increase in fruit weight and a lower degree of deformity under the conditions of densification of Iraí (N. testceicornis) and Jataí (T. angustula) bees. Under the evaluated conditions, the introduction of stingless bee boxes in the summer is recommended.

  • The effect of V2O5 addition on the low temperature sintering of Pb(Mn1/3Sb2/3)O3-PZT ceramics, which is known as a prominent material for piezoelectric transformer application was studied, and the densification behavior and piezoelectric characteristics of the samples as a function of heating rate were also examined. V2O5 led the system to liquid phase sintering by forming liquid phase during sintering, which accelerated densification through the particle rearrangement in the early stage of sintering. The liquid phase mostly existed at grain boundaries retarded the evaporation of PbO, while the densification temperature and the weight loss of V2O5-free samples were higher than those of samples with V2O5. Faster heating improved the densification of the samples regardless of V2O5 addition. The low temperature sintering at 100$0^{\circ}C$ was achieved in PMS-PZT ceramics with high density and reasonable dielectric and piezoelectric characteristics. This result revealed optimistic way to the development of multi-layered piezoelectric transformers.

  • This study was carried out to investigate characteristics of plywood overlaid with softwood veneers densified by resin impregnation and compression. The resin impregnability of Korean pine veneer under atmospheric pressure soaking was greater than that of larch, and impregnability of melamine resin was slightly greater than phenolic resin. It was suggested that resin impregnation ratio was affected by density and thickness of veneer. The largest melamine resin impregnation ratio of 50.7% was obtained with 1.26mm thick Korean pine veneer, and the lowest phenolic resin impregnation ratio of 11.7% with 3.41mm thick larch veneer. Therefore, it was suggested that the vacuum-pres sure-soak treatment is required at thick larch veneer. In densifying resin-impregnated veneers, densification ratio from 13.4 to 31.2% was obtained by high pressure from 15.6 to $20.8kgf/cm^2$. Impregnation of melamine resin also showed relatively greater at densification than that of phenolic resin. So it showed the degree of densification of about 20% or greater. It was seemed that adhesive bonding strength of plywood(base panel) which was directly pressed and overlaid with resin-impregnated veneer was affected by resin tackiness after resin impregnation followed by semi-drying. In laboratory scale, melamine resin impregnation was more favorable for the development of adhesive bonding strength owing to moisture control.
