Recently, since the prevalence of electric driving transfer system arouse the electric corrosion of neighboring underground metal establishment, the problems caused by that kind of electric corrosion became very serious. In this paper, we studied about a theoretical concept and concrete concepts of electric corrosion and tried suggested an optimistic chemico-electrical measures on the electric corrosion of underground metal establishments.

The skin exposure to solar irradiation and photoreactive xenobiotics may produce abnormal skin reaction, phototoxicity. Phototoxicity is an acute light-induced response, which occurs when photoreacive chemicals are activated by solar lights and transformed into products cytotoxic against the skin cells. Multifarious symptoms of phototoxicity are identified, skin irritation, erythema, pruritis, and edema that are similar to those of the exaggerated sunburn. Diverse organic chemicals, especially drugs, are known to induce phototoxicity, which is probably from the common possession of UV-absorbing benzene or heterocyclic rings in their molecular structures. Both UVB (290~320 nm) and UVA (320~400 nm) are responsible for the manifestation of phototoxicity. Absorption of photons and absorbed energy (hv) by photoactive chemicals results in molecular changes or generates reactive oxygen species and depending on the way how endogenous molecules are affected by phototoxicants, mechanisms of phototoxcity is categorized into two modes of action: Direct when unstable species from excited state directly react with the endogenous molecules, and indirect when endogeneous molecules react with secondary photoproducts. In order to identify phototoxic potential of a chemical, various test methods have been introduced. Focus is given to animal alternative test methods, i.e., in vitro, and in chemico assays as well as in vivo. 3T3 neutral red uptake assay, erythrocyte photohemolysis test, and phototoxicity test using human 3-dimensional (3D) epidermis model are examples of in vitro assays. In chemico methods evaluate the generation of reactive oxygen species or DNA strand break activity employing plasmid for chemicals, or drugs with phototoxic potential.

Contamination of subsurface results in degradation of geomaterials (i.e., soils and rock mass), in the long run. This is mainly due to the presence of chemical and/or radiological materials in undesirable concentrations and at elevated temperatures. However, as contaminant-geomaterial interaction is an extremely slow and complex process, which primarily depends on their physical, chemical and mineralogical properties, it is quite difficult to study this interaction under laboratory or in situ conditions. In such a situation, accelerated physical modeling, using a geotechnical centrifuge, and finite element/difference based numerical modeling techniques are found to be quite useful. This paper presents details of various modeling techniques developed by the researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai, India, for studying heat migration, flow and interaction (fate) of reactive and non-reactive contaminants in the geoenvironment, under saturated and unsaturated conditions. In addition, paper presents details of the technique that can be employed for determining susceptibility of a material to undergo physico-chemico-mineralogical alterations due to its interaction with contaminants.

The present study conducted a numerical modeling on the diesel SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system using ammonia as a reductant over vanadium-based catalysts $(V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2)$. Transient modeling for ammonia adsorption/desorption on the catalyst surface was firstly carried out, and then the SCR reaction was modeled considering for it. In the current catalytic reaction model, we extended the pure chemical kinetic model based on laboratory-scale powdered-phase catalyst experiments to the chemico-physical one applicable to realistic commercial SCR reactors. To simulate multi-dimensional heat and mass transfer phenomena, the SCR reactor was modeled in two dimensional, axisymmetric domain using porous medium approach. Also, since diesel engines operate in transient mode, the present study employed an unsteady model. In addition, throughout simulations using the developed code, effects of space velocity on the DeNOx performance were investigated.

The effect of chemically oxidized intermediates of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds on the degradation of the parent PAHs was characterized and evaluated for the context of cooxidation. Anthracene and pyrene exhibited extensive degradation (mean percent removal of 57.5%) after 28 days of incubation by introducing the Fenton oxidation intermediate of the PAH compounds, while unoxidized anthracene and pyrene exhibited 12.5% removal The chemical oxidation products can serve as a structually similar analogue substrates for a consortia of soil microorganisms and as a metabolic intermediates in the biodegradation sequence of the parent PAH compounds. These results may be interpreted in the context of cooxidation mechanism whereby high recalcitrant PAH compounds are biodegraded in the soil and suggest a potential tool for bioremediation of PAHs contaminated soils and protection of groundwater.

Study on the structure and dynamics of molecules at the atomic level is of great significance for understanding their function and stability as well as roles for various chemico-physical and biological processes. $^{17}O$ NMR spectroscopy has appeared as an elegant technique for investigating of the physicochemical and structural properties of oxygen-containing compounds such as metal organic frameworks and nanosized oxides. This method has drawn much attention as it provides unique insights into the properties of targets based on atomistic information of local oxygen environments which is otherwise difficult to obtain using other methods. In this mini review, we introduce and discuss the recent study and developments of $^{17}O$ NMR techniques which are tailored for the investigation on the structure and dynamics of water and inorganic materials.

In early 1990s, the Korean government has launched a deep-sea research program to secure the stable long-term supply of strategic metallic minerals including Cr, Cu and Ni. Through the pioneering surveys, Korea registered $150,000km^2$ of Mn-nodule field in the Clarion-Clipperton area, the NE equatorial Pacific to the international sea-bed authority (ISA) in 1994. Following the ISA exploration code, the final exclusive exploration area of $75,000km^2$ was assigned in 2002, based on results of eight-year researches of chemico-physical properties of nodules, bottom profiles and sediment properties. Since that time, environmental studies, mining technical developments including robot miner and lifting system and establishment of smelting systems were accompanied with the detailed geophysical studies to decipher the priori mining area until 2009. Major points of the recent Korea Mn-nodule program are deployed on a commercial scale until 2015. In order to meet the goals, we developed a 1/5 scaled robot miner compared to commercial one in 2012 and performed a mining test at the water depth of 1,370 m in 2013. In addition, detailed 25,000 scaled mining maps in the priori area, which can provide operation roots of the miner, will be prepared and an environmental-friendly mining strategy will be pursued based on the environmental impact test and environmental monitoring.

Human eyes and skin are frequently exposed to chemicals accidentally or on purpose due to their external location. Therefore, chemicals are required to undergo the evaluation of the ocular and dermal irritancy for their safe handling and use before release into the market. Draize rabbit eye and skin irritation test developed in 1944, has been a gold standard test which was enlisted as OECD TG 404 and OECD TG 405 but it has been criticized with respect to animal welfare due to invasive and cruel procedure. To replace it, diverse alternatives have been developed: (i) For Draize eye irritation test, organotypic assay, in vitro cytotoxicity-based method, in chemico tests, in silico prediction model, and 3D reconstructed human cornealike epithelium (RhCE); (ii) For Draize skin irritation test, in vitro cytotoxicity-based cell model, and 3D reconstructed human epidermis models (RhE). Of these, RhCE and RhE models are getting spotlight as a promising alternative with a wide applicability domain covering cosmetics and personal care products. In this review, we overviewed the current alternatives to Draize test with a focus on 3D human epithelium models to provide an insight into advancing and widening their utility.

Paper mulberry fibers have been used as fibrous raw materials for manufacturing traditional handmade paper, hanji for a long time. Compared to wood pulp fibers, pulp fibers from mulberry bast tissue have some benefits in physical and chemical properties due to their high D.P (degree of polymerization), M.W (molecule weight) and long fiber length. Specially, Korean handmade hanji shows outstanding characteristics in mechanical tensile strength, folding endurance, flexibility and long sustainable conservation properties. Therefore, hanji is widely applied to daily supplies, hygienic goods, medical supplies, clothing industries and so on. Recently, the potential demand of mulberry pulp fibers is more and more increased on the strength of high application fields. This study was focused on the possibility of wastewater recycling in unit operation systems for the development of automated mass production line. The properties and environmental loads of wastewater from debarking, cooking, bleaching and screening process were analyzed by means of COD, conductivity, turbidity and solid materials. The wastewater from debarking and cooking process was comparatively high in pollution load, and would be treated by additional approaches of chemico-physical method.
