  • A recently proposed method for stabilizing haptic interfaces and teleoperation systems was tested with a 'PHANToM' commercial haptic device. The 'Passivity Observer' (PO) and 'Passivity Control1er' (PC) stabilization method was applied to stabilize the system but also excited a high frequency mode in the device. To solve this problem, we propose a method to use a timevarying desired energy threshold instead of fixed zero energy threshold for the PO, and make the actual energy input follow the timevarying energy threshold. With the time-varying energy threshold, we make the PC control action smooth without sudden impulsive behavior by distributing the dissipation. The proposed new PO/PC approach is applied to PHANToM with high stiffness (K = 5000N/m), and stable and smooth contact is guaranteed. Resetting and active environment display problems also can be solved with the reference energy following idea.

  • The time-development of the wake vortices of the unsteady viscous flow past a semicircular cylinder is simulated using the vortex particle methods for direct numerical simulations(DNS). The early wake behaviour of the flow behind an impulsively started a semicircualr cylinder is evaluated for a range of Reynolds numbers between 60 and 200 with opposite body configurations respectively. The diffusion scheme based on the particle strength exchange(PSE) is used to account far the viscous effect accurately. And the vorticity generation algorithm to enforce the no-slip boundary conditions is employed. In order to redistribute particles efficiently on the distorted Lagrangian grid the particle distribution technique is adaptively revised, while maintaining the uniform resolution. The results of the simulations are compared to other experimental results.

  • Although the scientific evidence is not entirely supportive, atypical antipsychotics have been used widely for the treatment of children and adolescents with mental illnesses as alternatives to typical antipsychotics which have more serious unwanted adverse effects than atypical neuroleptics. On the basis of clinical experiences and research data, atypical antipsychotics have been prescribed for adolescents with schizophrenia, manic or mixed episodes of bipolar disorders, tic disorders, aberrant behaviors in pervasive developmental disorders, and impulsive or violent behaviors in disruptive behavior disorders. Due to their efficacy and relatively more tolerable side effects, the use of atypical antipsychotics has become increasingly popular in child and adolescent psychiatry. However, we should pay attention to the limitations associated with short-term clinical experiences and the lack of well-designed controlled studies, especially in terms of adverse effects including those involving metabolic processes.

  • The responses of reinforced concrete slabs subject to an impact loading near the ultimate load range are explored. The analysis is carried out on a simply supported rectangular reinforced concrete slab using a nonlinear explicit dynamic procedure and considering three material models: Drucker-Prager, modified Drucker-Prager, and concrete damaged plasticity, available in the commercial finite element software, ABAQUS/Explicit. For comparison purposes, the impact force-time response, steel reinforcement failure, and concrete perforation pattern are verified against the existing experimental results. Also, the effectiveness of mesh density and damage wave propagation are studied independently. It is shown that the presently adopted finite element procedure is able to simulate and predict fairly accurate the behavior of reinforced concrete slab under impact load. More detailed investigations are however demanded for the justification of effects coming from an imperfect projectile orientation as well as the load and structural surface conditions, including the impulsive contacted state, which are inevitable in an actual impact environment.

  • In situation of rapid growth of internet shopping recently, impulse purchase of customer is being appeared social problem, specially college student customers. The Purpose of this study was empirically examine the factors affecting customer impulsiveness buying in the internet shopping mall. The data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire from 298 male and female students who have shopping experience on the internet shopping mall, living in Seoul and Kyoungnam province. The major finding of this study are summarized as follows. First, the characteristics of internet shopper(search tendency) and impulsiveness buying has significant relationships. Second, the characteristics of internet shopping mall(convenience, marketing stimulus) had influence on customer's impulse purchase behavior.

  • In the present paper, the three-dimensional model of a typical rectangular concrete tank is excited using an artificial and a natural three components earthquake ground motion and the staggered displacement method is utilized for solving the coupled problem of the tank-contained liquid system in time domain. In the proposed method, surface sloshing of the liquid is taken into account in addition to the impulsive term and the appropriate damping values are applied on both of them. The resulted responses are compared with those obtained from the ABAQUS finite element software. It is found that the convective term affects responses extensively and must be considered in seismic design/safety assessment of storage tanks. In addition, the utilized method for solving the coupled problem is stable during the conducted general dynamic analyses and is able to capture the expected phenomena.

  • This paper aims not only to introduce the concept of linear singular systems, geometric structure, and feedback but also to provide applications of the multivariable linear singular system theories to electric circuits which may appear in some electronic equipments. The impulsive or discontinuous behavior which is not desirable can be removed by the set of admissible initial conditions. The output-nulling supremal (A,E,B) invariant subspace and the singular system structure algorithm are applied to this double-input double-output electric circuit. The Weierstrass form of the pencil (s E-A) is related to the output-nulling supremal (A,E,B) invariant subspace from which the time domain solutions of the finite and the infinite subsystems are found. The generalized Lyapunov equation for this application with feedback is studied and finally, the use of orthogonal functions in singular systems is discussed.

  • There is world wide concern for safety of nuclear power installations after the terrorist attack on World Trade Center in 2001 and several other civilian structures in the last decade. The nuclear containment structure in many countries is a double shell structure (outer shell a RCC and inner a prestressed concrete). The outer reinforced concrete shell protects the inner shell and is designed for external loading like impact and blast. A comparative study of non-linear response of reinforced concrete nuclear containment cylindrical shell subjected to impact of an aircraft (Phantom) and explosion of different amounts of blast charges have been presented here. A material model which takes into account the strain rate sensitivity in dynamic loading situations, plastic and visco-plastic behavior in three dimensional stress state and cracking in tension has been developed earlier and implemented into a finite element code which has been validated with published literature. The analysis has been made using the developed software. Significant conclusions have been drawn for dissimilarity in response (deflections, stresses, cracks etc.) of the shell for impact and blast loading.

  • This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a cylindrical liquid storage structure on horizontally layered half-space considering the effects of the interior fluid and exterior soil medium in the frequency domain. the horizontal and rocking motions of the structures are included in this study. The fluid motion is expressed in terms of analytical velocity potential function which can be obtained by solving the boundary value problem including the sloshing behavior of the fluid as well as deformed configuration of the structure. The effect of the fluid is included in the equation of motion as the impulsive added mass and a frequency-dependent convective added mass along the nodes on the wetted boundary with structure. The soil medium is presented using the 3-D axisymmetric finite elements and dynamic infinite elements. The present method can be applied to the structures embedded in ground as well as on ground since it models the soil medium directly as well as the structure. For the purpose of vertification dynamci characteristics of a tank on homogeneous half-space is analyzed. Comparison of the present results with those by others shows good agreement.

  • Transient dynamic behavior of a sandwich beam under thermal and impulsive loads has been researched in the context of higher-order beam theory. The impulse load of blast type has been enforced on the top exponent of the sandwich beam while it is in a thermal environment. The core of the sandwich beam is cellular with auxetic rectangular pattern, whereas the layers have been built with the incorporation of graphene oxide powder (GOP) and are micromechanically introduced through Halpin-Tsai formulization. Governing equations for the sandwich beam have been solved through inverse Laplace transform style for obtaining the dynamical deflections. The connection of beam deflections on temperature variability, GOP quantity, pulse load situation and core relative density has been surveyed in detail.
