  • In this paper, a new algorithm to design a time-domain equalizer (TEQ) for an xDSL system employing the discrete multitone (DMT) modulation is proposed. The proposed algorithm, derived by neglecting the terms whichdo not affect the performance of a DMT system in ARMA modeling, is shown to have similar performance tothe previous TEQ algorithms such as matrix inverse algorithm, fast algorithm, iterative algorithm, and inversepower method, even with the significantly lower computational complexity. In addition, since the proposedalgorithm requires only the received signal, the information on the channel impulse response or training sequenceis not needed. It is also shown that for the case where bridged tap is not included, the number of TEQ tapsrequired can be reduced to half(from 16 to 8) without affecting the overall performance. The performances of theproposed and previous TEQ algorithms are compared by applying them to ADSL environment.

  • This paper represents generation of time-varying underwater acoustic channels by performing scattering simulation with time-varying ocean surface and Kirchhoff approximation. In order to estimate the time-varying ocean surface, 1D Pierson-Moskowitz ocean power spectrum and Gaussian correlation function were used. The computed scattering coefficients are applied to the amplitudes of each impulse of BELLHOP simulation result. The scattering coefficients are then compared with measured doppler spectral density of signal components which were scattered from ocean surface and the correlation time used in the Gaussian correlation function was estimated by the comparison. Finally, bit-error-rate and channel correlation simulations were performed with the generated time-varying channel based on passive time-reversal communication scenario.

  • The performance of underwater acoustic communication system is sensitive to the ISI(Inter-Symbol Interference) due to delay spread develop of multipath signal propagation. The equalizer is used to combat the ISI. In this paper, the performances of underwater acoustic communication with turbo equalizer were evaluated by real data collected in Korean littoral sea. As a result, when one iterative decoding using turbo equalizer is applied, the performance was improved 1.5 dB than the case of the non-iterative equalizer at BER $10^{-4}$. In the case of two or three iterations the performance was enhanced about 3.5 dB, but the performance wasn't improved any more in the case of more than three times.

  • Conventional acoustic echo cancelers using ES(Exponentially weighted Stepsize) algorithm have simple operational configuration and fast convergence speed batter then NLMS algorithm, but they are very weak in external noise because ES algorithm updates filter taps using an average energy reduction rate of room impulse response in specific acoustical condition. So, a new configuration of acoustic echo canceler with stepsize generator and selector is proposed in this thesis. The proposed stepsize generator and selector improve conventional acoustic echo canceler's weakness in external noise and improve the system robustness. The stepsize generator generates additional stepsize value using moving averager, which is the residual noise energy of error signal multiplied by constant ${\gamma}$. The stepsize selector selects the stepsize value that has better performance in an acoustic echo canceler using a coefficient decision factor ${\Delta}_{differ}$ The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reduces residual error by 5[dB] to 10[dB], improves misadjustment regardless of external noise's SNR.

  • UWB impulse radio signals have an very short duration, extremely wide bandwidth and share the same frequency spectrum with other existing systems. It was determined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that UWB systems could cause interference with other systems, such as Global Positioning System (GPS) for example. Therefore, at present. the FCC has restricted the use of UWB systems to frequencies above 3.1㎓. In this paper, We evaluated performance of UWB system using proposed pulses in [1][2] that are strictly limited in time to remove interference while, at the same time, contain their power distribution to a frequency band from 3.1㎓ to 10.6㎓. In particular, We evaluated the BER Performance in relation to system parameters such as pulse duration. $\delta$, the number of users. Nu. and the number of symbols, M. We found the optimal pulse duration $\delta$ through computer simulation using developed UWB pulses in [1][2]. It is shown that performance evaluation between the UWB communication system using these UWB pulses [1][2]and the Gaussian monocycle pulse in M-ary PPM and BPSK schemes. These results can be contributed to construct M-ary PPM UWB communication system in terms of multiuser parameters and pulse duration.

  • In this paper, we propose a generalized vector channel model for wireless communication systems using antenna arrays. The proposed channel model reflects path loss. spatial-temporal variation of shadowing, multipath fading , Doppler effect, spatial distribution of local scatterers and delay spread due to remote dominant scatterers. In addition, we use a discrete ray model in which respective ray signal experiences independent shadowing, fading and Doppler shift, and impinges on antenna arrays at a distinct angle. Based on the proposed mode. we derive the relations on the spatial and temporal correlations of the received signals and implement a spatial channel simulator. By comparing the theoretical values with the simulated ones, we verify the effectiveness of the implemented simulator. The simulator is then used to generate an arbitrary channel impulse response and to analyze the channel characteristics under various environments.

  • We propose new pulse shapes for FCC-compliant ultra-wideband (UWB) radios. The projections onto convex sets (POCS) technique is used to optimize temporal and spectral shapes of UWB pulses under the constraints of all of the desired UWB signal properties: efficient spectral utilization under the FCC spectral mask, time-limitedness, and good autocorrelation. Simulation results show that for all values of the pulse duration, the new pulse shapes not only meet the FCC spectral mask most efficiently, but also have nearly the same autocorrelation functions. It is also observed that our truncated (i.e., strictly time-limited) pulse shapes outperform the truncated Gaussian monocycle in the BER performance of binary TH-PPM systems for the same pulse durations. The POCS technique provides an effective method for designing UWB pulse shapes in terms of its inherent design flexibility and joint optimization capability.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a noncoherent OOK (On-Off Keying) UWB (Ultra Wide Band) system based on power detection with noise power calibration and noise power windowing for ubiquitous sensor network applications in typical indoor wireless channels. Utilizing noise power calibration and noise power windowing, the current noise information can be initially or adaptively provided to determine suitable detection threshold value for signal demodulation. Simulation results show that the noncoherent OOK UWB system using noise power calibration achieves good BER (Bit Error Rate) performance which is favorably comparable to that of the system using the ideal adaptive threshold, while maintaining simple receiver structure. However, despite the serious loss of the data transmission rate, the performance improvement by noise power windowing is not so remarkable. furthermore, these performance results are similarly maintained in BEE 802.15 Task Group 3a UWB indoor channel model, and it is also revealed that the BER performance can be significantly improved by increasing the pulse repetition rate.

  • This paper deals with the capacitive voltage divider which can measure a transient voltages generated by operating a high voltage impulse generator. The transient voltage measuring system using the capacitive electric field sensor consists of the planar-type electric field sensor having a fast response characteristic and the wide-bandwidth voltage follower, and the input impedance of which is extremely high, about $10^{12}{\Omega}$. In order to analyze the response characteristics to a step input, the newly developed calibration method is proposed, and the error of voltage dividing ratio associated with set-up condition is investigated. Also the optimal set-up condition that is to be maintained within the range of 0.5 % is taken. From the calibration experiment, the frequency bandwidth of the transient voltage measuring system whose response time to a step input is about 15.8 ns, is from 6.37 Hz to 27.3 MHz. Therefore it is possible to measure the commercial frequency voltages as well as the transient over voltages without signal distortions.

  • High-frequency bistatic sea surface scattering channels according to sea state were measured at an experimental site of Geoje bay in April 2020, and compared with predictions based on scattering theory. A linear frequency-modulated signal with a center frequency of 128 kHz and a bandwidth of 32 kHz was used for the acoustic measurements. Sea surface wavenumber spectrum was calculated from surface roughness data measured by a wave buoy, and bistatic scattering cross-section of Small Slope Approximation (SSA) based on the wavenumber spectrum was estimated. In addition, scattering from near-surface bubbles using wind speed measured during experiments was considered. Surface scattering channel intensity impulse responses were simulated using the scattering cross-section and the simulation results were compared and analyzed with the field data.
