  • This study suggested the environmental components for open space in a healing environment based on the social support approach for integrating and enhancing users' activities and interactions. The physical environments of the open space in healing facilities should be suggested by social support design and support the interactions of various users. Particularly architectural environment conditions should reinforce the contribution to the revitalization of medical facilities based on improving the healing effect of patients through mutual exchange of users. The open space environment conditions influence users' healing process with physical design factors and users' interactions, and the flexible environments based on the social support that is crucial for circulation and mutual exchange of users. The open space transformation, integration of technology, and wayfinding system with color and signage also allow users to improve the space experience and easy access. The environmental components of open space design should include easy access for user inflow, flexible layout for comfort, access to outdoor spaces, integration of warm color schemes for relaxation, personalization of spaces with artwork, and visual interest through the use of textures and materials.

  • Apparel design is an economic activity to create values for users over the value chain of a product. In this paper, the contribution of apparel design is defined as the enhancement of users' perceived values by improving users' experience of products. In this context, the value of a product corresponds to compensation for experience or a promise for experience of a product. Experience can be sensory or psychological benefits to users. To evaluate the value of apparel design, the researcher identified and analyzed the apparel design parameters affecting users' experience and benefits of products such as macro-, micro-environmental factors, value chain factors, apparel designer factors, and user factors. For an analytical modeling of the values of apparel design, this paper introduces the concept of a utility function from economics. In economics, utility is a measure of desirability or satisfaction that can be correlative to need or desire. The measure of value can be found in the price which a user is willing to pay for the fulfillment or satisfaction of need or desire via the experience of a product.

  • This paper deals with an automated computer-aided process planning and die design system by which designer can determine operation sequences even if they have a little experience in process planning and die design for axisymmetric products. An attempt is made to link programs incorporating a number of expert design rules with the process variables obtained by commercial FEM softwares, DEFORM and ANSYS, to form a useful package. They can provide a flexible process based on either the reduction in the number of forming sequences by combining the possible two processes in sequence, or the reduction of deviation of the distribution on the level of the required forming loads by controlling the forming ratios. Especially in die design module an optimal design technique and horizontal split die were investigated for determining appropriate dimensions of components of multi-former die set. It is constructed that the proposed method can be beneficial for improving the tool life of die set at practice.

  • This paper proposes a design method for improving the disassembly by using the axiomatic approach. A product developer must design disassembly as well as assembly when designing the structure of a product. Axiomatic approach is a design tool that optimizes design. In this paper design evaluation method using information axiom sets impact variables and value function. As a result, examining the relationship between the functional requirements and evaluating the information can optimize designs.

  • As the complexity of engineering design environment has been increased, it becomes difficult to exchange design data among design support systems. The purpose of this paper is to develop the XML-based Generalized Mechanical Data Exchange Formats(GMDEF) independent of specific mechanical element and to improve the interoperability of them using ontology, in order to integrate diverse design data and facilitate communication between design support systems. GMDEF consists of PartDoc and AssemblyDoc. PartDoc represents the information of a single part. AssemblyDoc represents the relation of parts composing an assembly. GMDEF is validated by GMDEF Schema. GMDEF Schema consists of separated XML Schemas and has flexible architecture to facilitate extension. The ontology is applied to GMDEF Schema to share and reuse vocabularies of specific mechanical elements.

  • In this paper we present a new-generation sensor network processor which is not optimized in circuit level, but in system architecture level. The new design build on a conventional processor architecture, improving the design by focusing on application oriented specification, ISA, and micro-architectural optimization that reduce overall design size and advance energy-per-instruction. The design employs harvard architecture, 8-bit data paths, and an compact 19 bit wide RISC ISA. The design also features a unique interrupt handler which offloads periodical monitoring jobs from the main part of CPU. Our most efficient design is capable of running at 300 KHz (0.3 MIPS) while consuming only about few pJ/instruction.

  • The Universal Design is introduced as the universal principle to satisfy people's requirements for various environment. The public space of general hospitals should be designed with consideration of specific requirements of customers. The purpose of our research is to develop and propose the Universal Design checklist which considers the circulation in the public space. We investigated that the consideration for universal design was lacked by actual survey with the checklist made according to 'The law for improving convenience of the disabled, old people and pregnant women'. Furthermore, we found the problems of the checklist. We correct the checklist considering the measurements of the user's body and action. In addition, we propose the Universal Design Checklist by adding the new references in the article about the installation.

  • In order to improve the constructability of tall building construction, there is increasing needs to derive the design output by performing construction engineering at the design phase. It contributes to minimizing wastes such as design changes and reworks as well as improving project performance. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the application period and participants for engineering tasks derived from a previous study, and then regrouped to efficiently reflect them at the design phase. Considering similarity of application period and attributes, the existing 22 engineering tasks, which were classified into 5 factors, were reclassified into 13 groups. The results of this study can be used as basic data for efficient construction engineering execution at the design phase.

  • This paper presents the design for improving performance of the high-precision Magnetic levitation system. Motor performance on various design schemes such as thickness and magnetizing patterns of the permanent magnets, pole pitch, length of air gap, turn number of windings, and thickness of the aluminum-core has been investigated in detail by using FEM(Finite Element Method) Simulation-based DOE(Design of Experiments) method is also applied in order to reduce the large number of analysis according to each design variable and consider the effect among variables. The design in all aspects is proposed by an optimization algorithm using regression equation derived from the simulation-based DOE.
