  • Nonlinear finite element analyses of one dimensional consolidation problem were performed using an anisotropic hardening constitutive model. For the analyses, the anisotropic hardening elasto-plastic constitutive model based on the generalized isotropic hardening(GIH) rule was implemented into a nonlinear finite element analysis program, PLASTIC. In order to preserve the accuracy of the finite element solution for nonlinear problems, an implicit stress integration algorithm was employed. A consistent tangent moduli could also ensure the quadratic convergence of Newton's method. As a result, the nonlinear solution was accurately calculated and was converged to be asymptotically quadratic. In a consolidation problem, the relationship between load and settlement and between settlement and time vertical was analyzed comparing with results using the Cam-clay type model and the final consolidation settlement and the duration of primary consolidation could be evaluated rigorously using the GIH constitutive model.

  • For distillation columns, dynamic models which consider variable pressure and vapor holdup were studied. A most rigorous model which used the vapor hydraulic equation was studied with implicit methods. Vapor holdup must be considered in high pressure columns in order to predict dynamic responses accurately. The effect of pressure changes on the tray was only important for the vacuum column, particularly when heat input disturbances occurred. The rigorous vapor hydraulic model was shown to be useful, despite the fact that it is extremely stiff, provided an implicit integration algorithm (LSODES) is employed.

  • Structure-dependent integration methods seem promising for structural dynamics applications since they can integrate unconditional stability and explicit formulation together, which can enable the integration methods to save many computational efforts when compared to an implicit method. A newly developed structure-dependent integration method can inherit such numerical properties. However, an unusual overshooting behavior might be experienced as it is used to compute a forced vibration response. The root cause of this inaccuracy is thoroughly explored herein. In addition, a scheme is proposed to modify this family method to overcome this unusual overshooting behavior. In fact, two improved formulations are proposed by adjusting the difference equations. As a result, it is verified that the two improved formulations of the integration methods can effectively overcome the difficulty arising from the inaccurate integration of the steady-state response of a high frequency mode.

  • A new and efficient implicit scheme is proposed to obtain a steady-state solution in time integration and the comparison of characteristics with the approximation ways for the implicit method to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is provided. The conservative, finite-volume cell-vertex upwind scheme and artificial compressibility method using dual time stepping for time accuracy is applied in this paper. The numerical results obtained indicate that the direct application of Jacobian matrix to the Lower and upper sweeps of implicit LU-SGS leads to better performance as well as convergence regardless of CFL number and true time step than explicit scheme and approximation of Jacobian matrix. The flow simulation around box in uniform flow with unstructured meshes is demonstrated to check the validity of the current formulation.

  • Having the ability to keep on yielding stable solutions in problems involving high potential of instability, composite time integration methods have become very popular among scientists. These methods try to split a time step into multiple sub-steps so that each sub-step can be solved using different time integration methods with different behaviors. This paper proposes a new composite time integration in which a time step is divided into two sub-steps; the first sub-step is solved using the well-known Newmark method and the second sub-step is solved using Simpson's Rule of integration. An unconditional stability region is determined for the constant parameters to be chosen from. Also accuracy analysis is perform on the proposed method and proved that minor period elongation as well as a reasonable amount of numerical dissipation is produced in the responses obtained by the proposed method. Finally, in order to provide a practical assessment of the method, several benchmark problems are solved using the proposed method.

  • In this reaserch, a program for real time simulation of a vehicle is developed. This program uses relative coordinates to save the computation time and BDF(Backward Difference Formula) to integrate system variables. Numerical tests were performed for J-turn and Lane change steering, respectively. The validity of the program is proved by the ADAMS package. Numerical results showed that the proposed implicit method is more stable in carrying out the numerical integration for vehicle dynamics than the explicit method. Hardware requirements for real time simulation are suggested.

  • This paper presents a new difference scheme for numerical solution of stiff system of ODE’s. The present study is mainly motivated to develop an absolutely stable numerical method with a high order of approximation. In this work a double implicit A-stable difference scheme with the sixth order of approximation is suggested. Another purpose of this study is to introduce automatic choice of the integration step size of the difference scheme which is derived from the proposed scheme and the one step scheme of the fourth order of approximation. The algorithm was tested by means of solving the Kreiss problem and a chemical kinetics problem. The behavior of the gas explosive mixture (H₂+ O₂) in a closed space with a mobile piston is considered in test problem 2. It is our conclusion that a hydrogen-operated engine will permit to decrease the emitted levels of hazardous atmospheric pollutants.

  • Three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have been solved by the node-centered finite volume method with unstructured hybrid grids. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the artificial compressibility algorithm and convective fluxes are obtained by Roe's flux difference splitting scheme with linear reconstruction of the solutions. Euler implicit method is used for time-integration. The viscous terms are discretised in a manner to handle any kind of grids such as tetrahedra, prisms, pyramids, hexahedra, or mixed-element grid. The numerical efficiency and accuracy of the present method is critically evaluated for several example problems.

  • An implicit viscous turbulent flow solver is developed for two-dimensional geon unstructured triangular meshes. The flux terms are discretized based on a cell-centered formulation with the Roe's flux-difference splitting. The solution is advanced in time us backward-Euler time-stepping scheme. At each time step, the linear system of equation approximately solved wi th the Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. The effect of turbulence is with a standard k-ε two-equation model which is solved separately from the mean flow equation the same backward-Euler time integration scheme. The triangular meshes are generated advancing-front/layer technique. Validations are made for flows over the NACA 0012 airfoil. Douglas 3-element airfoil. Good agreements are obtained between the numerical result experiment.

  • The Fokker-Planck (FP) model is one of the commonly used methods for studies of the dynamical evolution of dense spherical stellar systems such as globular clusters and galactic nuclei. The FP model is numerically stable in most cases, but we find that it encounters numerical difficulties rather often when the effects of tidal shocks are included in two-dimensional (energy and angular momentum space) version of the FP model or when the initial condition is extreme (e.g., a very large cluster mass and a small cluster radius). To avoid such a problem, we have developed a new integration scheme for a two-dimensional FP equation by adopting an Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) method given in the Douglas-Rachford split form. We find that our ADI method reduces the computing time by a factor of ${\sim}2$ compared to the fully implicit method, and resolves problems of numerical instability.
