  • The purpose of this study was to examine implicit associations of negative emotion (i.e. anxiety and depression) and self among a college students having experienced posttraumatic stress symptoms. The participants were 61 college students(male 16, female 45). They were classified into two groups, trauma group(n=35) and control group(n=26) according to scores of Korean version of Impact of Events Scale-Revised. Two groups were compared with regard to automatic self-anxious and self-depressive associations measured with the Implicit Association Test using both words and facial expression pictures, respectively. As results, trauma group showed more enhanced self-anxious association in the words conditions, and stronger self-anxious and self-depressive associations in the pictures conditions than control group, whereas there were no significant differences between two groups in explicit cognition and depression. These results suggest that traumatic experiences could influence self-concepts in the automatic process. Limitations of the current study and suggestions for future research were discussed.

  • The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the college students' implicit theory of Korean creativity. This study deals with the degree to which the students exploit the creativity, and the obstacles for them to exploit the creativity. Another purpose of this study is to explore their implicit knowledge of Korean creative environments. The results are as follows. The implicit knowledge of Korean creativity could be characterized by the following key words: 'flexibility', 'application', 'transformation', 'originality', 'perseverance', 'not being stereotyped', 'esthetic flavor' and 'understanding-new-by-exploring-old'. Students thought themselves to be more or less creative. Students in art and physical education, and male students estimated themselves more creative than other discipline and female. They thought that socio-institutional factors such as educational system focused on the college entrance test are the most serious obstacles against creativity. About half of the students thought the creative persons would have been raised in poor family whereas other students thought differently. The home environment of the creative person was thought to be characterized by the words such as democratic, free and encouraging. Creative persons were thought to be maladaptive school life, but good at peer relations. This study will be used as a pioneer research which suggest a model of Korean creativity.

  • This article aimed to test whether specific social values (i.e., achievement vs. benevolence) could cause changes in decision making on bio-ethical issues. Study 1 investigated value preferences among young Korean college students according to Schwartz's (1992) model of social values. According to the results, the preference for achievement value was correlated negatively with the preference for benevolence value. In Study 2, following a sentence completion task which was conducted to trigger specific values, the participants had to indicate their ethical decisions regarding animal experiment, euthanasia, organ transplantation, biotechnology, sex selection and human cloning, Irrespective of the value priming (achievement vs. benevolence), there were more utilitarian decisions about animal experiment, euthanasia and organ transplantation. In contrary, there were more deontological decisions about sex selection and human cloning. Study 3 introduced a word completion task to assess implicit value preferences. The results showed that the participants with implicit preferences for the benevolence value in the condition of benevolence value priming were more frequently against animal experiments and organ transplantation than those with implicit value preferences for the achievement value. Social values are discussed for understanding one's bioethical decision making.

  • The upwind model is well known to simulate shockwaves, but it is rarely applied to natural rivers because of problems caused by the source terms. Although several methods have been developed to deal with the source terms, none of them has been applied to natural rivers. This paper deals with application of the upwind model to the natural river. An implicit upwind model is applied to a hypothetical irregular channel and a natural river with highly irregular bed, width, and hydraulic structures. Different types of the flows including steady-state flow, flood wave, dam-break wave, and bore are simulated to test accuracy and applicability of the implicit upwind model. It is proved that the model can simulate various types of flows in natural rivers with high accuracy and robustness.

  • Purpose - There has been little research on the variables influencing studio apartment values. This study aims to identify variables affecting the value of studio apartments in Seoul by empirically examining the interaction between sale prices and characteristics studio apartment characteristics. Research design, data, and methodology - We have analyzed data pertaining to 142 studio apartments in September 2010. A regression analysis model is constructed to test the significance of the variables in relation to the studio apartment sale prices per m2 in Seoul. Results - The age of the building is comparatively more significant than land use as the explanatory variable. Land price is the key variable affecting studio apartment sale prices and investors are willing to pay high implicit sale prices for locations that are associated with high land prices. Conclusions - The age of buildings explains a significant portion of the variability of the sale prices of studio apartment. Higher land prices result in higher sale prices for studio apartments. The older the buildings, the lower the sale prices of the studio apartments.

  • The main purpose of this study, based on implicit personality theory and attribution theory, was to examine whether there exist the physical attractiveness stereotype, "what is beautiful is good," in the present Korea, and if exist, what is the content of it. The index of the physical attractiveness of this study was the facial attractiveness judged by 30 female university students. The appropriateness of clothing was manipulated by 4 types of clothing perceived appropriate for two assumed situations by female university students. Three female faces having high, medium, and low attractiveness were simulated with the same body dressed four types of clothing using CAD system, and a total of 12 stimulus persons were created. A total of 524 male and female(262 of male, 262 of female) university students from 3 universities in Kwangju, Korea were participated as subjects in this study. The design for the experiment was a 3$\times$4$\times$2 randomaized factorial, with three levels of facial attractiveness (high, medium, low), and four types attire(formal-masculine, formal-feminine, casual-masculine, casual-feminine), two kinds of context (job interview, dating) in which perceptions were occurred. The data were analysed using factor analysis, MANOVA, t-test and Duncan test. The results were as follows: 1. The facial attractiveness exerted significant positive effects on the evaluation of sociability, adjustment, and potency of her in both of two assumed situations (p<.001, respectively). 2. The appropriateness of stimulus person′s clothing had significant positive erect on the evaluation of sociability of stimulus person in dating context(p<.001). 3. The gender of subjects did not influenced the trait evaluations in both of two assumed situations.

  • Purpose - This paper aims at exploring the effects of failure types such as failure in promotion orientation and failure in prevention orientation on consumers' consumption behavior, and the moderation role of lay theories in the effects. Research design, data, and methodology - This study employed 2 between-subject designs(failure in promotion orientation vs. failure in prevention orientation) and also 2 (failure in promotion orientation vs. failure in prevention orientation) with implicit self as the within-subject. Chinese consumers participated in the empirical study, and to verify the hypotheses ANOVA, T-test and regression analysis were used. Results - Consumers were more likely to choose adaptive consumption behavior rather than compensatory consumption behavior when they were encountered with failure in promotion orientation versus failure in prevention orientation. Lay theories did play the moderation role in the effect of failure types on consumption behavior. The incremental theorists who think that effort is an important way to accomplish their learning goals showed more willingness to conduct compensatory consumption behavior rather than adaptive consumption behavior. Conclusions - Marketers should put more attention on the ways by which their products can help consumers self-improve when consumers encounter with failure. They should also be aware of the importance of consumers' mindsets when designing and developing advertising messages.

  • A quasi-two-dimensional model for simulating the flood plain flow is developed. The model consists, in general, of a multiply-connected network which combines the main channel and two-dimensional flood plain cells. The main channel flow is described by the Saint Venant equations for one-dimensional unsteady flow, and the flood plain flow by the cell continuity and river-or weir-type stage-discharge relations between flood plain cells. The implicit algorithm for unsteady flow in looped channel network is extended to incorporate the flood plain flow. To verify the performance of the model, it is applied to three test problems, and sensitivities to various model parameters are analyzed. It turns out that the present model gives more accurate result than that by Cunge (1975) as the shape of cross section becomes more complex and irregular. Not only the inundation of water from the main channel but the return flow from the flood plain is successfully simulated.

  • The Parameter Identification of 2-demensional estuarine model was carried out using new output ADI-FDM numerical semi-implicit schem transformed in boundary fitted(BF) - coordinate. The hydrodynamic equations which is coupled with the transport equations were used as basic equations in the model. Thompson's equations were used to transform governing equations into rectangular plane equations and his elliptic grid generation scheme was used to generate curvilinear grid system. in BF - coordinates. The parameters to be identified are friction coefficient and disperse coefficient embedded in the governing equations. The numerical output scheme is tidally averaged salinity model in BF - coordinates. The algorithm to optimize norm of error between observations and calculations is the influence coefficinet algorithm associated with least square criterion. The lumped model is conssidered in identification. This paper was concetrated on checking whether the new output scheme might be useful to identify parameters in estuarine salinity model or not. The proposed method was tested through experimental application with hypothetical simple model. The result of the test shows that the proposed method can be used for parameter identification in estuarine model.

  • Recently, many users discuss and argue with others using replying comments. This implies that a series of comments can be a new source of information since various opinions can be appeared in the dispute. It is important to understand the implicit dispute structure immanent in the comment set. In this paper, we examine the characteristics of disputes using replying comments in the Internet forum sites using a set of test articles with the comments collected from SketicalLeft and Agora, which are famous Internet forum sites in Korea. And we propose a new method for detecting and visualizing the dispute sections and relations from a large set of replying comments. To show the performance of our method, we measured precision, recall, and F-measure. According to the experimental results, the F-measures of the detection of the comments in dispute are about 0.84 (SketpcialLeft) and 0.83 (Agora); those of the detection of the commenter pairs in dispute are 0.75 (SketpcialLeft) and 0.82 (Agora), respectively. Since our method exploits the temporal order of commenters to detect the disputes, it is not dependent on the host language nor on the typos in comments. Also, our method can help the readers to grasp the structure of controversy hidden in the comment set through the visualized view.
