  • This study investigated university students' (majoring physics education) understanding of some aspects of idealization frequently used in teaching and learning of physics, especially of mechanics. A total of 143 students were given a Questionnaire of six questions requiring written responses. Out of the six questions, the first three were concerned with basic idealized concepts, the next two with the making of the assumptions of ideal conditions for given problem settings, and the last with the identification of the idealization used in the given solution of a problem. Students' written responses were grouped into patterns and the relative frequencies of the patterns were counted. It was found that the students had limited understanding of the idealization and their ideas were diverse and frequently incorrect. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to the roles of idealization in physics education.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze secondary school chemistry education in Korea and China in order to identify implications for the improvement of Korean chemistry education. The school systems, curricula, and teacher education related to secondary chemistry education of both countries were compared and analyzed. The 6-3-3-4 school system is used in both countries, and national school curricula are formulated by the Ministries of Education in both countries. The 1996 chemistry curricular standard for advanced middle schools in China, and 1997 chemistry curriculum for Korean high schools were compared in several aspects, followed by comparisons of chemistry teacher education in both countries. Based on the comparative analysis of chemistry education, some ideas and issues which provide implications for improving Korean high school chemistry education were identified. Chemistry teaching in the junior secondary schools, tentative implementation of curricula, required course work in chemistry, structure of curricula, oral assessments, probation of teachers and other issues are identified and discussed in this study.

  • The purpose of the study was to provide useful implications for management of dessert cafe by discovering selection attributes for product satisfaction and long-term orientation. Using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 220 Version, the collected data from customers of dessert cafe in Seoul and metropolitan areas were analyzed for frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, and covariance structure analysis. As results of hypothesis verification, firstly, service standard and product diversity had a significant effect on product satisfaction of dessert cafe. Secondly, tastes and nutrients influenced positively long-term orientation of dessert cafe. Meanwhile, service standard, mood, and product diversity did not have a significant effect on long-term orientation. Thirdly, product satisfaction affected positively long-term orientation. The results of the study provided useful implications for management of dessert cafe.

  • The objectives of this study were 1) to evaluate the first year of localization of agricultural extension in Korea, 2) to present the development directions and implications of agricultural extension service in the next year of localization. The major results and implications were as follows. 1. The positive changes in localization were to establish local special projects and to work in agricultural extension without personnel changes. 2. The negative changes in localization were increase of unnecessary work load and decrease of morale because of lowered status. 3. The development directions were to cut back unnecessary work load, to rearrange an office, and to return to the national status of extension personnels.

  • This is an effort to project health care resources in need for the elderly in the future when advanced transportation systems would greatly reduce geographical accessibility to health care services for the rural elderly. Two areas, Kimhae and Chuncheon, were selected for the study. Projection of health professionals and health care institutions for the elderly were made based on the analysis for the morbidity and illness behavior reported to two data sources, National Survey for the Elderly in 1992 by Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs and beneficiary data by Korea Medical Insurance Cooperation for those living in the study areas in 1992. Projected number of health professionals and health care institutions were estimated for each area under study in years of 2010 and 2030, with those in a Japanese being used as a standard. Policy implications were discussed.

  • This study investigated various alternatives for childcare among dual-earner families and discussed implications for public policy development. Eight employed married women and two of their husbands were interviewed about work-family balance. All the interviewees complained that taking cue of the children in dual-earner families is a challenge. They resort to all available alternatives because public childcare support is insufficient and inadequate. There were five different types chilcare: extended family network, public and private institutions, paid help (nannies), rearranging work schedules, and training their children to take cue of themselves. However, all these alternatives entail various problems. More and better childcare facilities and programs should be built and after-school programs should be designed. On the other hand, parents should also make more effort to prioritize children's needs in finding a balance between work and family.

  • Alexithymia represents deficits in the cognitive processing and regulation of emotions. It is observed in many cases of psychosomatic disease, anorexia nervosa, panic disorder, depression etc. Many studies have shown that alexithymia is associated with maladaptive styles of emotion regulation, low emotional intelligence, interhemispheric transfer deficit, and reduced rapid eye movement density. Psychotherapies that enhance emotional awareness may be effective in alleviating the difficulties of alexithymic individuals. Aexithymia is useful for constructing the role of personality and emotions in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders. It may serve as a bridge between neurobiology and psychology. We review recent alexithymia theory and research and their implications for treatment of psychosomatic disorders.
