  • In this paper, the narrow band-pass filter with compact-size using the ${\lambda}g/2$ open stubs is proposed. The filter size is reduced by realization of transmission line at second harmonics and at the same time the power can be transferred to the output by using the fundamental wave generated in the resonator and the transmission line in which the impedance mismatch technique is adopted. Thus, the proposed filter can be reduced to half-length of horizontal transmission line than the conventional one. The experimental results show that insertion loss is 1.58 dB and return loss is 9.86 dB, and the fractional bandwidth is 10 % at the center frequency of 5.8 GHz. The filter size is $10.34{\times}18.56\;mm2$.

  • Finite difference analysis were applied to study the principle operation of monopole antenna for moisture determination in oil palm fruit at 2 GHz. The electromagnetic field interact with oil palm fruit on the interface between the antenna and oil palm fruit and cause a reflection. The reflection measurement is based on mismatch impedance or dielectric properties between two media. Reflection coefficient is used to quantify the level of reflection. The monopole antenna was made of RG405/U semi-rigid coaxial cable with an inner and outer diameter of 0.45 mm and 1.50 mm, respectively with 2.23 mm length of protruding conductor over 5.66 cm length of monopole antenna. This monopole antenna for moisture detection was compared with induced EMF method in terms of reflection coefficient at 2 GHz. The results show that the complex reflection coefficient measured using monopole antenna provides significant results to predict moisture content in oil palm fruit.

  • Since Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes have a high risk for the formation of blisters during their operation in pressurized heavy water reactors, there has been a strong incentive to develop a method for the non-destructive detection of blisters grown on the tube surfaces. However, because there is little mismatch in acoustic impedance between the hydride blisters and zirconium matrix, it is not easy to distinguish the boundary between the blister and zirconium matrix with conventional ultrasonic methods. This study has focused on the development of a special ultrasonic method, so called ultrasonic velocity ratio method for a reliable detection of blisters formed on Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes. Hydride blisters were grown on the outer surface of the Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube using a cold finger attached to a steady state thermal diffusion equipment. To maximize a difference in the ultrasonic velocity in hydride blisters and the zirconium matrix, the ultrasonic velocity ratio of longitudinal wave to shear wave, $V_L/V_S$, has been determined based on the flight time of the longitudinal echo and reflected shear echo from the outer surface of the tubes. The feasibility of the ultrasonic velocity ratio method is confirmed by comparing the contour plots reproduced by this method with those of the blisters grown on the Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes.

  • We herein propose a calibration method for a sampling oscilloscope. The proposed method can correct the systematic errors in the oscilloscope such as time-based distortion and impedance mismatch. In addition, it can accurately estimate the residual jitter that remains after a time-based correction and the scale factor that varies in accordance with the setting of the pulse generator. The proposed method is validated thorough the comparison and verification with the power meter, and the uncertainty of the measurement method is analyzed.

  • Ti : $LiNbO_3$ traveling-wave phase optical modulators at wavelength 1.3㎛ have been designed and fabricated, focusing on the optical waveguide and asymmetric coplanar electrode structure. To improve the phase-mismatch of traveling-wave ACPS electrode, the characteristic impedance, effective microwave index, and electrode loss have been presented as a function of geometric parameters including electrode and buffer layer thickness. Low-loss channel optical waveguides on $LiNbO_3$ were fabricated by the Ti diffusion method with $O_2$ water-vapor environment. $2.5{\mu}m$ thick electrode was successfully fabricated by double-spin image reversal process. Modulation bandwidth was limited by a resonance at 2.9 GHz and modulation bandwidth up to 2.5GHz was approxirnately measured.

  • A highly efficient multi-mode balanced power amplifier(PA) structure is proposed for W-CDMA handset applications. The proposed PA has 2-stage amplifier configuration and the stage-bypass and load impedance switching techniques were applied to enhance power efficiency at medium power level as well as low output power level. Using the two techniques, four highly efficient power modes were realized. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed structure, a GaAs HBT balanced PA module was designed, fabricated, and measured.

  • Propulsion of gene coated micro-particles is desired for non-intrusive drug delivery inside biological tissue. This has been achieved by the development of a device that uses high power laser pulses. The present paper looks at the mechanisms of micro-particle acceleration. Initially, a high power laser pulse is focused onto the front side of a thin aluminium foil leading to its ablation. The ablation front drives a compression wave inside the foil, thus leading to the formation of a shock wave, which will later reflect from the rear side of the foil, due to acoustic impedance mismatch. The reflected wave will induce an opposite motion of the foil, characterized by a very high speed, of the order of several millimeters per microsecond. Micro-particles, which are deposited on the rear side of the foil, thus get accelerated and ejected as micro-projectiles and are able to penetrate several hundreds of micrometers inside tissue-like material. These processes have been observed experimentally by using high-speed shadowgraphy and considered analytically.

  • In this paper, we design, fabricate and measure two kinds of high-frequency packages for K-band CMOS FMCW radar chips using RF via structures. The packages are fabricated with the conventional PCB process and LTCC process. The design centering of the packages is performed at 24 GHz and impedance variation caused by the wire bonding and RF via structure is fully evaluated using 3D electromagnetic simulation. The RF via structure with characteristic impedance of $50{\Omega}$ is used to reduce impedance mismatch loss. Two kinds of test packages with back-to-back connected RF paths are fabricated and measured for the design verification of the PCB-based package and LTCC package. Their measured results show an insertion loss of less than 0.4 dB at 24 GHz and less than 0.5 dB for 20~29 GHz. The measured return loss is less than -13 dB for the PCB-based package and less than -15 dB for the LTCC package in the frequency band, but the return loss of the package itself is predicted to be better than that of the test package by about 5 dB, because the ripples of the back-to-back connection typically degrade the return loss by 5 dB or more.

  • This paper addresses the analysis and the design optimization of differential interconnects for Low-Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) applications. Thanks to the differential transmission and the low voltage swing, LVDS offers high data rates and improved noise immunity with significantly reduced power consumption in data communications, high-resolution display, and flat panel display. We present an improved model and new equations to reduce impedance mismatch and signal degradation in cascaded interconnects using optimization of interconnect design parameters such as trace width, trace height and trace space in differential flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) transmission lines. We have carried out frequency-domain full-wave electromagnetic simulations, time-domain transient simulations, and S-parameter simulations to evaluate the high-frequency characteristics of the differential FPCB interconnects. The 10% change in trace width produced change of approximately 6% and 5.6% in differential impedance for trace thickness of $17.5{\mu}m$ and $35{\mu}m$, respectively. The change in the trace space showed a little change. We believe that the proposed approach is very helpful to optimize high-speed differential FPCB interconnects for LVDS applications.

  • The monitoring and investigation of underwater landslide help to understand its mechanism, increase the usefuless of design and construction and reduce the losses. This paper presents three high resolution geophysical techniques electrical resisitance, ultrasonic wave reflection imaging, and shear wave tomography conducted to determine the lab-scaled submerged landslide. Electrical resistance profiles of a soil mass obtained by an electrical resistance probe provide detailed information to assess the spatial distribution of the soil mass with milimetric resolution. An ultrasonic wave image obtained by recording the reflections from interfaces of different impedance materials permits detecting layers and landslide with submilimetric resolution. The pixel based image of immersed landslides is created by the inversion of the boundary information achieved from the traveling time of shear waves. The experimental results show that the ultrasonic wave imaging and the electrical resistance can provide complementary information; and their association with S-wave tomography image can produce a 3-D view of the underwater landslide. This study suggests that geophysical techniques may be effective tools for the detection of the underwater landslides and spatial distribution offshore.
