  • This study was conducted to find out environment-friendly disease control method to Alternaria blight caused by Alternaria panax of ginseng. For this study, 150 methanol extracts from medicinal plants were evaluated and the extract of Impatiens balsamina showed most strong antifungal activity against A. panax. The methanol extract of I. balsamina showed also stable antifungal activity against other ginseng pathogens such as Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium sp., when treated by heat or pH. In vivo, Alternaria blight incidence rate was low of 13% with the treatment of I. balsamina methanol extract compared to 35% of the non-treatment. The antifungal compound of I. balsamina was purified and identified by using a silica gel column chromatography, TLC and ESI-LC/MS/MS analysis. The compound which showed strong antifungal activity was identified as 2-methoxy-1,4-naphtoquinone ($C_{11}H_8O_3$).

  • Kaempferol was isolated and identified from the methanol extract of the flowers of Impatiens balsamina. Kaempferol showed inhibitory activity against mushroom tyrosinase with an $ID_{50}$ of 0.042 mM. Inhibition kinetics, as determined using a Lineweaver-Burk plot, showed kaempferol to be a competitive inhibitor of mushroom tyrosinase with a $K_i$ value of 0.011 mM. The lag phase of tyrosine hydroxylation catalyzed by mushroom tyrosinase clearly increased on increasing the concentration of kaempferol. In addition to its tyrosinase inhibiting activity, kaempferol strongly inhibited melanin production by Streptomyces bikiniensis, in a dose-dependent manner, without inhibiting cell growth. For comparative purposes, the tyrosinase inhibitory activity of kaempferol was also assayed versus quercetin, a positive standard.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of plant growth retardants (daminozide, chlormequat, uniconazole, paclobutrazole) and fungicides of triazole chemical (hexaconazole, microbutanil, difenoconazole, terbuconazole, bitertanol) on the growh of 'New Guinea' impatiens. Plant height and canopy were decreased by all kinds of plant growth retardants tested in both 'Anguilla' and 'Papete'. Especially, uniconazole and paclobutrazole were most effective in inhibition of top growth. However, the content of chlorophyll increased at all treatments of plant growth retardants and stem diameter tended to be increased at the highest concentration of all kinds of plant growth retardants tested. The results in all cultivars tested, with the experiment of triazole fungicides, were similar to the results of experiment with plant growth retardants. These results suggest that fungicides of triazole chemical such as hexaconazole, microbutanil, difenoconazole, terbuconazole and bitertanol can be used for the promotion of quality in potted 'New Guinea' impatiens.

  • The purification of the MeOH extract from Impatiens basamina by repeated column chromatography led to the isolation of one new tetrahydronaphthalene (1), together with eleven known compounds (2 - 12). The structure of the new compound (1) was determined by spectral data analysis ($^1H$ and $^{13}C$-NMR, $^1H-^1H$ COSY, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY, and HR-ESI-MS). Isolated compounds (1 - 12) were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on NO production in LPS-activated murine microglial BV-2 cells and their effects on NGF secretion from C6 glioma cells. Compounds 3, 7, and 10 reduced NO levels in LPS-activated murine microglial cells with $IC_{50}$ values of 26.89, 25.59, and $44.21{\mu}M$, respectively. Compounds 1, 5, and 9 upregulated NGF secretion to $153.09{\pm}4.66$, $156.88{\pm}8.86$, and $157.34{\pm}3.30%$, respectively.

  • An effective pollinator was investigated based on visiting insects to confirm the pollination mechanism of Impatiens furcillata Hemsl. (cheo-jin-mul-bong-seon), an annual herb that is also a species endemic to Korea that has hardly been studied in relation to pollination ecology. The insects that visited the group of I. furcillata studied here consisted of four orders, 11 families, and 16 species; Hymenoptera had seven species (43.8%), Lepidoptera had four (25.0%), Diptera four (25.0%), and Hemiptera one (6.2%). Visiting insects were divided into those that took only nectar, those that took nectar and pollen, and those that took neither. Insects that are effective for pollination are judged considering the length and body type of their mouth parts, and Amegilla florea Smith (huin-jul-beol) is judged to be the most effective pollinator in the survey area. As a result of observing pollination behavior, when visiting a flower, A. florea, which extended its glossa, approached the front, landed on a wing petal of I. furcillata, crawled into the flower tube, and then backed up and reversed its steps, with pollen adhered to its back. The findings here present basic information about species biology related to both I. furcillata and A. florea.

  • Plants produce extrafloral nectar (EFN), liquid of carbohydrates to protect themselves against various insect herbivores through attracting natural enemy, ants, wasp and parasitoids, so EFN production is well known as one of indirect defense mechanisms. In many plants, EFN production is increased or induced when plants are attacked and damaged by insect feeding, whereas there are some plants whose EFN production is not altered or even decreased upon insect attack. The feeding types (chewing or sap feeding) of insects attacking plants also affect EFN production. The objective of this study was to examine how insect herbivore alters production of extrafloral nectar of Impatiens balsamina. Two different types of herbivores, leaf chewing and sap feeding insects, Spodoptera litura and Impatientinum impatiens respectively, are utilized. Plants were mechanically damaged by making holes on leaves with Jasmonic acid (JA) and regurgitate of S. litura added on. Two different densities of aphids were confined on leaves. The results of the study was that mechanical damage and JA or regurgitate addition did not affect EFN production in I. balsamina. Aphid feeding, regardless of density treated, decreased EFN production. The results of the study suggest that production of extrafloral nectar of Impatiens balsamina can be changed by insect feeding, and the effects of insect feeding can depend on the type of insects.
