  • Recently, applications of integrated large composite structures have been attempted to many structures of vehicles. To improve the cost performance and reliability of the integrated composite structures, it is necessary to judge structural integrity of the composite structures. For the judgement, we need fracture simulation techniques for composite structures. Many researches oil the fracture simulation method using FEM have been reported by now. Most of the researches carried out simulations considering only matrix cracking and fiber breaking as fracture modes, and did not consider delamination. Several papers have reported the delamination simulation, but all these reports require three-dimensional elements or quasi three- dimensional elements for FEM analysis. Among fracture mechanisms of composite laminates, delamination is the most important factor because it causes stiffness degradation in composite structures. It is known that onset and propagation of delamination are dominated by the strain energy release rate and interfacial moment. In this study, laminated composite has been described by using 3 dimensional finite elements. Then impact behavior of the laminated composite is simulated using FEM(ABAQUS/Explicit) with progressive failure mechanism. These results are compared with experimental results.

  • This paper will examine the possibilities of the virtual tests of composite structures by simulating mechanical behaviors by using supercomputing technologies, which have now become easily available and powerful but relatively inexpensive. We will describe mainly the applications of large-scale finite element analysis using the direct numerical simulation (DNS), which describes composite material properties considering individual constituent properties. DNS approach is based on the full microscopic concepts, which can provide detailed information about the local interaction between the constituents and micro-failure mechanisms by separate modeling of each constituent. Various composite materials such as metal matrix composites (MMCs), active fiber composites (AFCs), boron/epoxy cross-ply laminates and 3-D orthogonal woven composites are selected as verification examples of DNS. The effective elastic moduli and impact structural characteristics of the composites are determined using the DNS models. These DNS models can also give the global and local information about deformations and influences of high local in-plane and interlaminar stresses induced by transverse impact loading at a microscopic level inside the materials. Furthermore, the multi-scale models based on DNS concepts considering microscopic and macroscopic structures simultaneously are also developed and a numerical low-velocity impact simulation is performed using these multi-scale DNS models. Through these various applications of DNS models, it can be shown that the DNS approach can provide insights of various structural behaviors of composite structures.

  • In this study, the numerical simulation using AUTODYN-3D program was investigated angle trajectory prediction for inclined impacts of projectiles. The penetration and perforation of polycarbonate plate by 7.62 mm projectile was investigated numerically. The characteristic structure of the projectile's trajectory in the polycabonate plates was studied. Two combined failure criteria were used in the target plate, and the target plate was modeled with the properties of polycarbonate for simulating the ricochet phenomenon. The effect of the angle of inclination on the trajectory and kinetic energy of the projectile were studied. The dynamic deformation behaviors tests of polycabonate were compared with numerical simulation results which can be used as predictive purpose. From the simulation, the ricochet phenomenon was occurred for angles of inclination of $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}{\leq}20^{\circ}$. The projectile perforated the plate for ${\theta}{\leq}30^{\circ}$, thus defining a failure envelope for numerical configuration. The numerical analyses are used to study the effect of the projectile impact velocity on the depth of penetration (DOP). It can be observed that the residual velocities were almost linear relative to penetration velocities. It means that polycarbonate has high resistance at higher velocities.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a profound impact on large-scale gatherings throughout the world. Social distancing has become one of the most common measures to restrict the spread of the novel Coronavirus. Islamic pilgrimage attracts millions of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia annually. One of the mandatory rituals of pilgrimage is the symbolic stoning of the devil. Every pilgrim is required to perform this ritual within a specified time on three days of pilgrimage. This ritual is prone to congestion due to strict spatiotemporal requirements. We propose a pedestrian simulation model for implementing social distancing in the stoning ritual. An agent-based simulation is designed to analyze the impact of inter-queue and intra-queue spacing between adjacent pilgrims on the throughput and congestion during the stoning ritual. After analyzing several combinations of intra-queue and inter-queue spacings, we conclude that 25 queues with 1.5 meters of intra-queue spacing result in an optimal combination of throughput and congestion. The Ministry of Hajj in Saudi Arabia may benefit from these findings to manage and plan pilgrimage more effectively.

  • In this study, we investigated the impact of different initial data on atmospheric modeling results using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model. Four WRF simulations were conducted with different initialization in March 2015, which showed the highest monthly mean $PM_{10}$ concentration in the recent ten years (2006-2015). The results of WRF simulations using NCEP-FNL and ERA-Interim were compared with observed surface temperature and wind speed data, and the difference of grid nudging effect on WRF simulation between the two data were also analyzed. The FNL simulation showed better accuracy in the simulated temperature and wind speed than the Interim simulation, and the difference was clear in the coastal area. The grid nudging effect on the Interim simulation was larger than that of the FNL simulation. Despite of the higher spatial resolution of ERA-Interim data compared to NCEP-FNL data, the Interim simulation showed slightly worse accuracy than those of the FNL simulation. It was due to uncertainties associated with the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) field in the ERA-Interim data. The results from the Interim simulation with different SST data showed significantly improved accuracy than the standard Interim simulation. It means that the SST field in the ERA-Interim data need to be optimized for the better WRF simulation. In conclusion, although the WRF simulation with ERA-Interim data does not show reasonable accuracy compared to those with NCEP-FNL data, it would be able to be Improved by optimizing the SST variable.

  • This paper proposed a new impact equation by analyzing the form of the proposal section 1 and section 2 proposed by Korea Highway Corporation, F-type, NJ-type and SS-type with HVOSM program Because the impact equation proposed by Ministry Construction & Transportation(1992) considered an only impact velocity, the values of impact loads calculated by HVOSM program are 21.5∼44 times as large as those using equation of MCT. The values of HVOSM program are 1.4 times as large as those of Olson's model because Olson's equation consider impact vehicle, impact velocity and impact angle. But, it does not consider geometric characters, while HVOSM program considers characters. Considering the shapes of sections and the conditions of colliding, HVOSM program can calculate imuact load. As Multiple Regression Analysis is conducted with the calculated values, the R² values of the proposed equations are 0.984 in SB1∼SB3 and 0.958 in SB4∼SB6. After all, the equation proposed in this study have better results than Olson's equation.

  • This study conducted a visual impact assessment of an apartment complex project proposed in Jungkye-dong, Seoul. Three design alternatives of the project-alternatives 1, 2, and 3-which differed in form, color, scale, and arrangement of buildings were simulated with computer image processing technique. The simulations were presented to the public who were mainly residents in the project area, and visual impact resulted from the alternatives was assessed by them. Their responses were then statistically analyzed. It was found that, in terms of compatibility with the surrounding landscape, alternative 1 was the most favourable because it was more traditional, natural, and diverse than alternatives 2 and 3. At the same time, the alternative was most preferred by the public because it was more plain, natural, and diverse than other alternatives. It was suggested that the visual impact assessment with public participation conducted in this study would help both planners and the public to make more intelligent decisions.

  • The importance of cost reduction has grown bigger to ensure the competetive power of products in the electric home appliances industry. Thus, it is necessary to assess the reliability due to drop-impact happenning in process of distribution of microwave ovens with the panel and cavity of thinner thickness for cost reduction. In the present study, the drop/impact simulation using the explicit code LS-DYNA3D has been carried out for improving the impact resistance of a microwave oven. This CAE-based design approach can be successfully applied to enhance the deteriorated dynamic behavior under the impact conditions of dropping height 70cm according to ISTA procedure 2A.

  • Crash box is introduced to vehicle design to improve the impact performance and reduce the damage of vehicle body at impact speed. The crash box behind bumper can absorb impact energy effectively to improve vehicle safety. Repair cost at collision accident can be cut down by use of this box. The configuration of car body must be designed by considering the characteristic of material due to the deformation of car body happened at impact. Many papers have been published about material of crash box all over the world. The study of crash box with tube expansion type has been going on Korea. This study is done by the simulation analysis about front collisions against 5 kinds of aluminum crash boxes with the basic structure of square section.

  • A structural health monitoring (SHM) technique for locating impact position in a composite plate is presented in this paper. The technique employs a single sensor and spatial focusing properties of time reversal (TR) and inverse filtering (IF). We first examine the focusing effect of back-propagated signal at the impact position and its surroundings through simulation. Impact experiments are then carried out and the localization images are found using the TR and IF signal processing, respectively. Both techniques provide accurate impact location results. Compared to existing techniques for locating impact or acoustic emission source, the proposed methods have the benefits of using a single sensor and not requiring knowledge of material properties and geometry of structures. Furthermore, it does not depend on a particular mode of dispersive Lamb waves that is frequently used in the SHM of plate-like structures.
