Micro-Pattern Machining Characteristics Evaluation of $Si_3N_4$-hBN based Machinable Ceramics Using Powder Blasting Process (파우더 블라스팅에 의한 $Si_3N_4$-hBN계 머시너블 세라믹스의 미세패턴 가공성 평가)

  • Sandblasting has recently been developed into a powder blasting technique for brittle materials. In this study, the machinability of $Si_3N_4$-hBN based machinable ceramics are evaluated for micro - pattern making processes using powder blasting. Material properties of the developed machinable ceramics according to the variation of h-BN contents give a good machinability to the ceramics. The effect of scanning times, the size of patterns and variation of BN contents on the erosion depth of samples without mask and samples with different mask patterns in powder blasting of $Si_3N_4$-hBN ceramics are investigated. The Parameters are the impact angle of $90^{\circ}$, the scanning times of nozzle up to 40, and the stand-off distances of 100mm The widths of masked pattern are 0.1mm 0.5mm and 1mm. The powder used is Alumina particles, WA#600. and the blasting pressure of powder is 0.2MPa. Through required experiments, the results are investigated and analyzed. As the results, the machinability of the developed ceramics increases as the BN contents in the ceramics.

Analysis of Biomechanical Differences based on Distance Changes in Connection with Approach Swings of Tour-professional Golfers

  • Objective: This study aimed to compare differences in biomechanical factors according to distance changes in relation to approaches during a round of golf to obtain basic data on golf swings. Methods: The research subjects were 8 KPGA-affiliated professional golfers who performed approach shots that put a ball into a circle of 8 feet in diameter from distances of 30, 50, and 70 m. Data were collected by using six infrared cameras and a ground reaction force device, which were applied to calculate biomechanical factors by using Kwon3D XP. The calculated data were subjected to one-way ANOVA by using SPSS 20.0, with the significance level set at p value of 0.05. Results: Elapsed time, stance width, clubhead position variation, clubhead synthesis speed, and cocking angle significantly differed according to distance change during the approach swing. Clubhead speed was positively related with stance width and clubhead displacement. Ground reaction force significantly differed according to distance change during the approach swing. Factors before and after showed differences in other states, except in the impact state. Conclusion: In the present study, we drew several conclusions regarding biomechanical factors and ground reaction forces according to distance change in the approach swing of professional golfers. According to these conclusions, we suggest that distance control with swing range is more important than power control in maintaining the accuracy and consistency of golf swing and is the most important mechanism of golf swing.

  • A robust controller with the sliding mode is proposed for stable dynamic walking of the biped robot in this paper. For the robot system to be controlled, which is modeled as 14 DOF rigid bodies by the method of multi-body dynamics, the joint angle trajectories are determined by the velocity transformation matrix. Also Hertz force model and Hysteresis damping element are utilized for the ground reaction and impact forces during the contact with the ground. The biped robot system becomes unstable since those forces contain highly confused noise components and some discontinuity, and modeling uncertainties such as parameter inaccuracies. The sliding mode control is applied to solve above problems. Under the assumption of the bounded estimation errors on the unknown parameters, the proposed controller provides a successful way to achieve the stability and good performance in spite of the presence of modeling imprecisions of uncertainties.

Heat input effects on microstructure quenched and tempered steel ASTM A517 to stainless steel AISI 316L

  • In this study, the effect of heat input on weld metal microstructure and the effects of dissimilar weld heat affected zone in quenched and tempered ASTM A517 on the stainless steel AISI 316L is investigated through the optimization of welding parameters. For this purpose, two welding techniques are used, tungsten-conventional gas and pulsed gas with weld wire ER 309MoL with Diameter 2.4 mm. Research showed that the grain size of the heat affected zone in pulsed welding is less compared with conventional welding; weld metal structure is fully austenitic, it has a finer structure in the pulsed method. Additionally, the growth of weld metal adjacent steel A517 is different from steel 316L. Further, investigation showed that the rate of dilution is less in the pulsed method and the impact energy is increased in each three regions of the weld metal and heat affected zones in the pulsed method; the fracture in the weld metal and heat affected zone of steel 316L is quite soft and it is semi-crispy in the heat affected zone of steel A517.

Genome-wide association study to identify canine hip dysplasia loci in dogs

  • Korean army dogs are raised for special purposes and have contributed much to society. However, several diseases occur in dogs. Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is a musculoskeletal disorder that occurs frequently in Korean army dogs and interferes with their activities. If we could control CHD, this would have a positive effect on their performance. This study performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 69 Korean army dogs to find significant loci for CHD using 170K single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). CHD was classified according to the Norberg angle criterion. The control group comprised 62 dogs classified as relatively normal, and 7 dogs with severe CHD formed the case group. From the GWAS analysis, we concluded that SNPs present on chromosome 4 might have a significant impact on the overall expression of canine hip dysplasia.

  • Gust load is a very important load factor in designing various structures of an aircraft and judging its stability. This is because the blast effect on the aircraft in operation increases the risk of damage to the structure of the aircraft and causes a negative impact such as shortening the fatigue life by generating vibration. Particularly in the case of wing, a change in angle of attack is caused by gust load, and an additional lift acts on the wing, thereby being exposed to various excitational environments. Severe structural damage to the aircraft may occur if the natural frequencies of the aircraft wing are close to or coincident with the frequencies of the gust load applied to the wing. Recent trends of research include flight dynamics analysis considering discontinuous gusts or structural optimization of the blades under gust load. A number of studies have been conducted to interpret gust load response in consideration of irregularities in gusts. In this paper, we tried to imagine the situation of the aircraft subjected to the gust load as realistic as possible, and proposed an algorithm to track back the critical gust profile according to given aircraft characteristics from the viewpoint of preliminary engineering prediction.

  • The performance of a vertical type centrifugal distributor of granular materials was studied by means of mathematical models and experimental investigations. To develop the mathematical description of particle motion, some assumptions were made. The distribution process consisted of three stages: the entrance of a particle to the blade, the motion of the particle on the blade, and the motion of the particle in the air. The physical properties of fertilizer, which affected the particle motion, were investigated: bluk density, coefficient of friction, coefficient of restitution, and particle size distribution. The particle motion were simulated by using a computer. A prototype distributor was designed and constructed for experimental tests. The following conclusions were drawn from the computer simulation and experiment results. 1. The fertilizer may slide or roll at the point of contact when they impact on the blade and move along the blade. 2. The interaction among fertilizers may prevent them from bouncing. 3. When fertilizers roll on the blade, rolling resistance is one of the factors affecting the particle's motion. 4. The trajectory angle and position of fertilizers from a disc depend on the blade position and particle shape, but the rotating speed of the disc affected them only slightly.

Effects of Rolling and Cooling Conditions on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of High-Deformable Pipeline Steels (고변형능 라인파이프강의 미세조직과 기계적 특성에 미치는 압연 및 냉각 조건의 영향)

  • Effects of rolling and cooling conditions on microstructures and mechanical properties of high-deformable pipeline steels were investigated in this study. Six kinds of pipeline steels were fabricated by varying rolling and cooling conditions, and their microstructures were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Tensile and Charpy impact tests were conducted on the steels in order to examine the mechanical properties. The steels rolled in the two-phase region showed better low-temperature toughness than those in the single-phase region due to the larger amount of ferrites having high-angle boundaries, although they have lower strength and absorbed energy. The steel rolled in single-phase and finish-cooled at higher temperature showed a good combination of high strength and good low-temperature toughness as well as excellent deformability of the lowest yield ratio and the highest uniform elongation because of the presence of fine ferrite and a mixture of various low-temperature transformation phases.

  • This research investigates injury values and vehicle deformation for vehicle frontal crash compatibility. To investigate compatibility in an individual case, it is possible to impact two vehicles and evaluate the injury values and deformations in both vehicles. In this study, four tests were conducted to evaluate compatibility. A large and mini vehicle were subjected to a frontal car-to-car crash test at a speed of 48.3 km/h with an offset of 40%. An inclination car-to-car crash test using the large and small vehicle were conducted at 30 km/h at a $30^{\circ}$ angle. The results of the 48.3 km/h, car-to-car frontal crash revealed extremely high injury values on the chest and upper leg of the Hybrid III 50% driver dummy with seatbelt in the mini vehicle compared to the large vehicle. For the 30 km/h, car-to-car inclination crash, however, injury values in the small vehicle were 1.5 times higher compared to the large vehicle.

  • The design point of the cross-flow fan is generally based on the region within low static pressure and high flow rate. It relatively makes high dynamic pressure at low speed because a working fluid passes through an impeller blade twice. However, it has low static pressure efficiency between $30\%$ and $40\%$ because of relative high impact loss. The purpose of this study is to research the reciprocal relation among each parameter. Experiments and numerical analyses are conducted on effects of a stabilizer and a rearguider on performance analysis of a cross-flow fan. Two-dimensional, unsteady governing equations are solved using FVM, PISO algorithm, sliding grid system and standard $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model. Experiments are also carried out to estimate the performance of the modeled cross-flow fan. It is clarified that the rearguider of Archimedes type has excellent results for the most part.
