  • In the immersive virtual reality environment, we can select and manipulate various virtual objects. in order to select a virtual object, we generally use Ray-casting method that fires a virtual line in user's view and selects an object when the line and the object match, or Cone-casting method that is widely used to select multiple objects at the same time. However, since the virtual objects used in CAD are composed of small and complex objects in detail, when selecting an object in the user's view by existing methods, there occurs a ambiguity problem that needs additional realignment operation even though an object is selected as a group. in this paper, even if a virtual object is composed of several small virtual objects, it calculates the spatial and logical relationship among objects and expands or shrinks desired objects, so that the user can quickly and accurately select a desired object. in order to evaluate the proposed method, performance comparison were performed using Our and Ray-Casting and Cone-Casting methods. Experimental results show that the proposed method has the fastest speed and the highest accuracy when selecting the desired objects.

  • The metaverse is expected to evolve into an immersive environment based on photorealistic stereoscopic imaging to integrate real and virtual worlds. To transition from flat images to immersive stereoscopic images, such as light fields and holograms, a continuous cycle of technological development should be reached in media, content, and device technologies, ranging from acquisition and generation to transmission and synthesis as well as reproduction and interaction. Additionally, owing to the multitude of components involved in the metaverse, proper service realization will be challenging without concurrent advancements in computing and communication technologies that facilitate the integration of such components. We introduce research and development trends in media, contents, and devices at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute toward the next generation of stereoscopic images.

  • The increasing complexity of complex buildings, such as high-rise buildings and underground subway stations, presents new challenges to firefighters. In a fire in complex buildings, the importance of the collaboration between firefighters is clear. The increased demand on firefighter training for such environment is now evident. Due to cost, time, and safety issues, it is impossible to experience a real fire in such environments for training. In addition, the use of real fire for training does not enable repeatable training and the evaluation of the training is difficult. We developed a team-based firefighter training simulator for complex buildings using the virtual reality technology. It provides the training and evaluation of firefighting and mission-based team training. To model real fire phenomena in virtual space, a numerical analysis method based on fire dynamics is used. To achieve an immersive virtual environment, an augmented reality technique for the compensation of real world image and a haptic technique for heat experience are adopted. The developed training simulator can help the firefighter to respond to large and complex firefighting scenarios, while maintaining the safety of the trainees.

  • In this paper, we present an immersive videoconferencing system that enables gaze correction between users in the internet protocol TV (IPTV) environment. The proposed system synthesizes the gaze corrected images using the depth estimation and the virtual view synthesis algorithms as one of the most important techniques of 3D video system. The conventional processes, however, causes several problems, especially temporal inconsistency of a depth video. This problem leads to flickering artifacts discomforting viewers. Therefore, in order to reduce the temporal inconsistency problem, we exploit the joint bilateral filter which is extended to the temporal domain. In addition, we apply an outlier reduction operation in the temporal domain. From experimental results, we have verified that the proposed system is sufficient to generate the natural gaze-corrected image and realize immersive videoconferencing.

  • Interaction technique in .3D virtual environment is a decisive factor that affects the immersion and presence felt by users in virtual space. Especially, in fields that require exquisite manipulation of objects such as electronic manuals in desktop environment, interaction technique that supports effective and natural manipulation of object is in demand. In this paper, 3D scene graph can be internally divided and reconstructed to a list defending on the users selection and through moving focus among the selection candidate objects list, the user can select 3D object more accurately Also, by providing various feedbacks for each manipulation stage, more effective manipulation is possible. The proposed technique can be used as 3D user interface in areas that require exquisite object manipulation.

  • In this paper, we planned to see the positive effects of the immersive virtual environment. In particular, the positive effect of presence on physical performance was explored. A total of 25 participants were recruited for this experiment and his/her physical performance was measured by Electromyography (EMG) while they were exercising (rowing), and presence was measured by a self-reported measure. The participants were randomly assigned to experience either a) Virtual Reality (VR) or b) non-VR (2D screen) condition when they played the exergame. The result showed that 1) there was a positive relationship between representation mode and presence and 2) the higher level of presence reinforced the user's physical performance. The limitation of the study and future study were also discussed.

  • Immersive contents is content that provides a realistic experience by maximizing the user's five senses, and includes virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. In order to provide a sense of reality to users in immersive content, it is necessary to provide realistic visual images, hearing, and touch. However, due to the rapid change in the environment for developing immersive content, experts in training human resources are having difficulties in designing the curriculum. In this study, we propose a series of educational courses that use drones to acquire and process real-world measurement data and apply the derived data to VR, AR, and MR to help experts in training immersive content develop talent. The design of training process composes through demand survey and analysis of companies, students, and local communities. This study can be a useful resource for education experts who want to train immersive contents manpower.

  • Virtual reality that we have seen from the movies in 80's and 90's is hawing near based on the rapid progress of science together with a computer technology. Various virtual reality system developments (such as VRML, HMD FishTank, Wall Type, CAVE Type, and so on) and the advancement of those systems make for the embodiment of virtual reality that gives more sense of the real. Virtual reality is so immersive that makes people feel like they are in that environment and enable them to manipulate without experiencing the environment at first hand that is hard to experience in reality. Virtual reality can be applied to the spheres, such as education, high-level programming, remote control, surface exploration of the remote satellite, analysis of exploration data, scientific visualization, and so on. For some connote examples, there are training of a tank and an aeroplane operation, fumiture layout design, surgical operation practice, game, and so on. In these virtual reality systems, the actual operation of the human participant and virtual workspace are connected each other to the hardware that stimulates the five senses adequately to lend the sense of the immersion. There are still long way to go, however, before long it will be possible to have the same feeling in the virtual reality as human being can have by further study and effort. In this thesis, the basic definition, the general idea, and the kind of virtual reality were discussed. Especially, CAVE typed in reality that is highly immersive was analyzed in definition, and then the method of VR programming and modeling in the virtual reality system were suggested by showing the restoration process of Kyongbok Palace (as the content of the original form of the culture) that was made by KISTI(Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information) in 2003 through design process in virtual reality system. Through these processes, utilization of the immersive virtual reality system was discussed and how to take advantage of this CAVE typed virtual reality system at the moment was studied. In closing the problems that had been exposed in the process of the restoration of the cultural property were described and the utilization plan of the virtual reality system was suggested.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the educational needs of virtual reality simulations that can be applied to novice nurses during the waiting period before starting work in a hospital. Methods: A convergent mixed methods was used. The survey data were collected from 230 novice nurses, and a focus group interview was conducted with 6 new nurses. The data were collected from November 2022 to January 2023. Descriptive statistics, a frequency analysis, independent t-test, and an Importance-Performance Analysis were performed using SPSS 24.0. Results: Appropriate topics for virtual reality simulation education were indicated to be medications and intravenous injections, which are high priority topics in quantitative and qualitative research. The novice nurses wanted group activity training three to four times a week for two weeks before beginning work in a hospital. They also wanted an immersive virtual reality system based on a real hospital environment. Conclusion: Based on the above results, this study provides basic data for the development of a virtual reality simulation education that can improve the adaptation of novice nurses to clinical practice. A strategy was suggested to utilize the waiting time before beginning work in a hospital as educational time.
