  • After COVID-19, organizations have widely adopted platforms such as zoom or developed their proprietary online real-time systems for remote work, with recent forays into incorporating the metaverse for meetings and publicity. While ongoing studies investigate the impact of avatar customization, expansive virtual environments, and past virtual experiences on participant satisfaction within virtual reality or metaverse settings, the utilization of the metaverse as a dedicated workspace is still an evolving area. There exists a notable gap in research concerning the factors influencing the performance of the metaverse as a workspace, particularly in non-immersive work-type metaverses. Unlike studies focusing on immersive virtual reality or metaverses emphasizing immersion and presence, the majority of contemporary work-oriented metaverses tend to be non-immersive. As such, understanding the factors that contribute to the success of these existing non-immersive metaverses becomes crucial. Hence, this paper aims to empirically analyze the factors impacting personal outcomes in the non-immersive metaverse workspace and derive implications from the results. To achieve this, the study adopts the Embodied Social Presence (ESP) model as a theoretical foundation, modifying and proposing a research model tailored to the non-immersive metaverse workspace. The findings validate that the impact of presence on task engagement and task involvement exhibits a moderating effect based on the metaverse platform used. Following interviews with participants engaged in non-immersive metaverse workplaces (specifically Gather Town and Ifland), a survey was conducted to gather comprehensive insights.

  • As virtual realty has become an issue of providing immersive services, in the area of virtual realty, it has been actively investigated to develop user interfaces for immersive interaction. In this paper, we propose a gesture recognition based immersive user interface by using an IR LED embedded helmet and data gloves in order to reflect the user's movements to the virtual reality environments effectively. The system recognizes the user's head movements by using the IR LED embedded helmet and IR signal transmitter, and the hand gestures with the data gathered from data gloves. In case of hand gestures recognition, it is difficult to recognize accurately with the general recognition model because there are various hand gestures since human hands consist of many articulations and users have different hand sizes and hand movements. In this paper, we applied the Mixture-of-Experts based gesture recognition for various hand gestures of multiple users accurately. The movement of the user's head is used to change the perspection in the virtual environment matching to the movement in the real world, and the gesture of the user's hand can be used as inputs in the virtual environment. A head mounted display (HMD) can be used with the proposed system to make the user absorbed in the virtual environment. In order to evaluate the usefulness of the proposed interface, we developed an interface for the virtual orchestra environment. The experiment verified that the user can use the system easily and intuituvely with being entertained.

  • Under the influence of COVID-19, as a measure of social distancing for about two years and one month, non-face-to-face services using ICT element technology are expanding not only to the education sector but to all fields. In particular, as educational programs using the Metaverse platform spread to various fields, educators, and learners have more learning experiences using Edutech, but problems through non-face-to-face learning such as reduced immersion or concentration in education are raising In this paper, to overcome the problems raised through non-face-to-face learning and develop metaverse immersive media digital contents to improve the educational environment, we utilize VR (Virtual Reality) based on an immersive metaverse to provide education / Training contents and the educational environment was established. In this paper, we presented a system to increase immersion and concentration in educational contents in a virtual environment using HMD (Head Mounted Display) for learners who are put into military education/training. Immersion was further improved.

  • Extended reality (XR) provides an immersive virtual experience by using various media. The XR virtual environment enables interactions between the real and virtual worlds in virtual, augmented, and mixed reality scenarios. XR is being used in various areas such as industry, medical care, road transportation, gaming, education, and culture. XR and multimedia enhancement are important business scenarios for fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks. As users' demand for emerging media services gradually increases, enhancements in networks should be implemented for delivering multimedia services such as XR. We describe related standardization trends and requirements of the XR service in 5G mobile networks. We also discuss technological enhancements for 5G mobile networks as specified by the 3GPP SA2 working group.

  • Immersive media, also known as spatial media, has become essential with the decrease in face-to-face activities in the COVID-19 pandemic era. Teleconference, metaverse, and digital twin have been developed with high expectations as immersive media services, and the demand for hyper-realistic media is increasing. Under these circumstances, MPEG-I Immersive Media is being standardized as a technologies of navigable virtual reality, which is expected to be launched in the first half of 2024, and the Audio Group is working to standardize the immersive audio technology. Following this trend, this article introduces the trend in MPEG-I immersive audio standardization. Further, it describes the features of the immersive audio rendering technology, focusing on the structure and function of the RM0 base technology, which was chosen after evaluating all the technologies proposed in the January 2022 "MPEG Audio Meeting."

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the educational needs of virtual reality simulations that can be applied to novice nurses during the waiting period before starting work in a hospital. Methods: A convergent mixed methods was used. The survey data were collected from 230 novice nurses, and a focus group interview was conducted with 6 new nurses. The data were collected from November 2022 to January 2023. Descriptive statistics, a frequency analysis, independent t-test, and an Importance-Performance Analysis were performed using SPSS 24.0. Results: Appropriate topics for virtual reality simulation education were indicated to be medications and intravenous injections, which are high priority topics in quantitative and qualitative research. The novice nurses wanted group activity training three to four times a week for two weeks before beginning work in a hospital. They also wanted an immersive virtual reality system based on a real hospital environment. Conclusion: Based on the above results, this study provides basic data for the development of a virtual reality simulation education that can improve the adaptation of novice nurses to clinical practice. A strategy was suggested to utilize the waiting time before beginning work in a hospital as educational time.

  • We introduce a display for virtual-reality (VR) fire training. Firefighters prefer to wear and operate a real breathing apparatus while experiencing full visual immersion in a VR fire space. Thus, we used a thin head-mounted display (HMD) with a light field and folded optical system, aiming to both minimize the volume for integration in front of the face into a breathing apparatus and maintain adequate visibility, including a wide viewing angle and resolution similar to that of commercial displays. We developed the optical system testing modules and prototypes of the integrated breathing apparatus. Through iterative testing, the thickness of the output optical module in front of the eyes was reduced from 50 mm to 60 mm to less than 20 mm while maintaining a viewing angle of 103°. In addition, the resolution and image quality degradation of the light field in the display was mitigated. Hence, we obtained a display with a structure consistent with the needs of firefighters in the field. In future work, we will conduct user evaluation regarding fire scene reproducibility by combining immersive VR fire training and real firefighting equipment.
