A variety of actuators fur an implantable artificial heart have been studied. They, all, however, share the disadvantages of a complicated energy conversion mechanism and of the need to use bearings. A ferrofluidic actuator directly drives magnetic fluids by applying a magnetic field to these fluids; it does not require bearings. In this study, the feasibility of a ferrofluidic actuator for an implantable artificial heart was studied. An way of two Poles of ring solenoids was mounted near the acrylic tube $({\phi}\;7.4mm)$. A rubber sack (volume : $2m{\ell}$ was connected to both ends of the acrylic tube. The sack were encased in a rigid chamber that had inlet and outlet ports. The acrylic tube and the rubber sack were filled with water encased in a rigid chamber magnetic fluid and the iron cylinder were immersed in the water. Two experiment method was conducted. 1) distance between stoppers were 72mm and 2) distance between stoppers were 104mm. A stroke volume was stability and $0.96m{\ell}$ was obtained in the experiment 1 and $1.92m{\ell}$ in the experiment 2. The energy efficiency of Experiment method 2 is about five times than Experiment method 2. A magnetic fluid-driven blood pump could be feasible if the magnetic fluid with high magnetization (3 times yester than the current value) is developed.

To make an automated system for a salt field, it is necessary to measure the salinity and water level of the evaporation site. In this paper, a method to simultaneously measure the salinity and water level by measuring the buoyancy forces of two fixed buoyancy bodies is proposed. The proposed measurement method measures the buoyancy of the main part and reference part when the measuring device is immersed in the salty water, and simultaneously measures the salinity and water level through the sum and difference of the two buoyancy forces. Since there is no mechanical movement in the measurement of buoyancy, measurement errors and maintenance needs can be reduced in the mudy environment of salt field. By applying the proposed method, we developed a system that can simultaneously measure salinity and water level remotely at the evaporation site of a salt field. Through a measurement experiment using a reference salty water having various levels of salinity, the results of a salinity error of 0% and a water level error of 2mm were obtained, and the effectiveness of the proposed salinity and water level measuring device was verified. When an automated system is constructed using the developed salinity and water level measuring device, labor reduction, work environment improvement, and productivity improvement are expected.

Boron(B) is a rare resource used for various purposes such as glass, semiconductor materials, gunpowder, rocket fuel, etc. However, Korea depends entirely on imports for boron. Considering the global boron reserves and its current production rate, boron will be depleted on earth in 50 years. Thus, a process including proper adsorbent materials recovering boron from seawater is demanded. This research proposed carbonized nanofibers prepared from electrospun PAN(polyacrylonitrile) mats as promising materials to adsorb boron in aqueous solution. First, the mechanism of boron adsorption on carbonized nanofibers was investigated by DFT(density functional method)-based molecular modeling and the calculated energetics demonstrated that the boron chemisorption on the nitrogen-doped graphene surface by a two-step dehydration is possible with viable activation energies. Then, the electrospun PAN mats were stabilized in air and then carbonized in an argon atmosphere before being immersed in the boric acid aqueous solution. Analytically, SEM(scanning electron microscopy) and Raman measurements were employed to confirm whether the electrospinning and carbonization of PAN mats proceeded successfully. Then, XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) peak analysis showed whether the intended nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber surface was formed and boron was properly adsorbed on nanofibers. Those results demonstrated that the carbonized nanofibers prepared from electrospun PAN mats could be feasible adsorbents for boron recovery in seawater.

Despite recent efforts for fabricating flexible transparent conducting films (TCFs) with low resistance and high transmittance, several obstacles to meet the requirement of flexible displays still remain. Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films, which have been traditionally used as the TCFs, have a serious obstacle in TCFs applications. SWNTs are the most appropriate materials for conductive films for displays due to their excellent high mechanical strength and electrical conductivity. Recently, it has been demonstrated that acid treatment is an efficient method for surfactant removal. However, the treatment has been reported to destroy most SWNT. In this work, the fabrication by the spraying process of transparent SWNT films and reduction of its sheet resistance by Au-ionic doping treatment on PET substrates is researched. Arc-discharge SWNTs were dispersed in deionized water by adding sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant and sonicated, followed by the centrifugation. The dispersed SWNT was spray-coated on PET substrate and dried on a hotplate. When the spray process was terminated, the TCF was immersed into deionized water to remove the surfactant and then it was dried on hotplate. The TCF film was then was doped with Au-ionic doping treatment, rinsed with deionized water and dried. The surface morphology of TCF was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The sheet resistance and optical transmission properties of the TCF were measured with a four-point probe method and a UV-visible spectrometry, respectively. This was confirmed and discussed on the XPS and UPS studies. We show that 87 ${\Omega}/{\Box}$ sheet resistances with 81% transmittance at the wavelength of 550 nm. The changes in electrical and optical conductivity of SWNT film before and after Au-ionic doping treatments were discussed. The effects of hole transport interface layer using Au-ionic doping SWNT on the performance of organic solar cells were investigated.
An improved crystal rotation method with increased accuracy and range is proposed and experimentally verified for simultaneous measurement of molecular tilt angle and thickness of LC (liquid crystal) layer of an LC cell. The improvement is brought about by direct determination of difference between phases instead of intensities of two components of orthogonal linear polarization of the light passing through an LC cell filled with uniformly oriented molecules. By comparing the experimental data with theoretical result the thickness and pretilt angle are determined more precisely. Further improvement is brought about by use of a liquid gate filled with an index matching liquid in which the LC cell is immersed. Because of the index matching liquid reflection of light at the surfaces of an LC cell almost completely disappears and the range of angle of refraction in the LC layer increases significantly, which gives rise to increased signal to noise ration as well as decreased statistical error. With this improvement precise measurement for either very thin (<10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and/or higher pretilt angle($\geq$10$^{\circ}$) LC cells become possible.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of a calcium hydroxide plug treated with a bonding agent. Ninety extracted human anterior teeth and premolars with single canal were used in this study. Crowns were removed. the canal's were instrumented. and the roots were randomly divided into three groups of 30 each. In control group. a single apical seat was prepared with #60 K file 1mm short of the apex and the root canal was obturated with Gutta-percha and Sealapex by the lateral condensation method. In experimental group 1 and group 2. to prepare an apical isthmus of 1mm in length. the first apical seat was prepared with a #45 K file 1mm short of the anatomical apex and with a #60 K file 2mm short for the second apical seat. Dry calcium hydroxide powders were packed in the apical isthmus with a hand plugger and #60 K file and then. the root canal was obturated with Gutta-percha and Seal apex by the lateral condensation method. In experimental group 2. following an application of the bonding agent to the plug. the root canal was obturated in the same way. The teeth of each group were immersed in a 2% methylene blue dye solution. for 1, 2, and 4 weeks. The distance from the tip of the cone to the deepest penetration was measured using the Tool maker's microscope. The results were as follows : 1. The teeth having the calcium hydroxide plug treated with the dentin bonding agent (experimental group 2) showed the lowest leakage with 1.4705mm and the control group without apical plug(no apical isthmus) showed the highest leakage with 3.1735mm. 2. The control group without apical plug showed higher leakage than experimental group 1 having the calcium hydroxide plug treated without the dentin bonding agent(p>0.05). 3. The control group without apical plug and experimental group 1, having the calcium hydroxide plug treated without the dentin bonding agent. showed higher leakage than experimental group 2. having the calcium hydroxide plug treated with the dentin bonding agent(p<0.001). 4. The immersion time had no significant effect on the degree of leakage. In conclusion, the results showed that the calcium hydroxide plug treated with the dentin bonding agent could decrease the microleakage from the root apex effectively.
A QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) multiresidue method was developed for the simultaneous analysis of 124 pesticides in soil by LC-MS. The procedure involved liquid extraction of soil immersed with 0.2N $NH_4Cl$ by acetonitrile with 1% acetic acid, followed by anhydrous $MgSO_4$ and sodium acetate, and dispersive SPE cleanup with $MgSO_4$, primary secondary amine (PSA) and $C_{18}$. The extracts were analyzed with LC-MS/MS in ESI positive mode. Standard calibration curves were made by matrix matched standards and their correlation coefficients were higher than 0.99. Recovery studies for the validation were carried out using two type soils, loam and sandy loam, at four concentration levels (0.005, 0.01, 0.02, and 0.1 mg/kg). The recoveries of pesticides were in the range of 70-120% with < 20% RSD except 4 pesticides, Benfuracarb, Ethiofencarb, Pymetrozine, and Pyrethrin. This result indicated that the method using QuEChERS and LC-MS/MS could be applied for the simultaneous determination of pesticide residues in soils.
The purpose of this study was to measure the polymerization shrinkage and hygroscopic expansion of resin-based temporary filling materials and to evaluate microleakage at the interface between the materials and cavity wall. Five resin-based temporary filing materials were investigated: Fermit (Vivadent), Quicks (Dentkist), Provifil (Promedica), Spacer (Vericom), Clip (Voco). Caviton (GC) was also included for comparison. Polymerization shrinkage of five resin-based temporary filling materials was measured using the bonded disc method. For the measurement of hygroscopic expansion, the discs of six cured temporary filling materials were immersed in saline and a LVDT displacement sensor was used to measure the expansion for 7 days. For estimating of microleakage, Class I cavities were prepared on 120 extracted human molars and randomly assigned to 6 groups of 20 each. The cavities in each group were filled with six temporary filling materials. All specimens were submitted to 1000 thermocycles, with temperature varying from $5^{\circ}C/55^{\circ}C$. Microleakage was determined using a dye penetration test. The results were as follows: 1. Fermit had significantly less polymerization shrinkage than the other resin-based temporary fill ing materials. Fermit (0.22%) < Spacer (0.38%) < Quicks (0.64%), Provifil (0.67%), Clip (0.67%) 2. Resin-based temporary filling materials showed 0.43-1.1% expansion in 7 days. 3. Fermit showed the greatest leakage, while Quicks exhibited the least leakage. 4. There are no correlation between polymerization shrinkage or hygroscopic expansion and microleakage of resin-based temporary filling materials.
Traditional computer simulation uses only traditional input and output devices. With the recent emergence of haptic techniques, which can give users kinetic and tactile feedback, the field of computer simulation is diversifying. In particular, as the virtual-reality-based surgical simulation has been recognized as an effective training tool in medical education, the practical virtual simulation of surgery becomes a stimulating new research area. The surgical simulation framework should represent the realistic properties of human organ for the high immersion of a user interaction with a virtual object. The framework should make proper both haptic and visual feedback for high immersed virtual environment. However, one model may not be suitable to simulate both haptic and visual feedback because the perceptive channels of two feedbacks are different from each other and the system requirements are also different. Therefore, we separated two models to simulate haptic and visual feedback independently but at the same time. We propose an adaptive mass-spring method as a multi-modal simulation technique to synchronize those two separated models and present a framework for a dual model of simulation that can realistically simulate the behavior of the soft, pliable human body, along with haptic feedback from the user's interaction.
Titanium oxide film was deposited on the commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) by thermal oxidation method for its medical application. The cp-Ti disks were cleaned and then heat-treated at the temperatures of 500, 550, 600, 650, and 700${\circ}C$, respectively, for 10 min in air or Ar. To test the ability of calcium phosphate formation, the specimens were immersed in the Eagle's minimum essential medium solution at 36.5${\circ}C$ for 15 days. The morphology and chemical composition of the surfaces before and after soaking were analyzed by using FE-SEM and EDS. The in-vitro formation of carbonated calcium phosphate on the thin films containing nano-sized $TiO_2$ crystals was identified.
