We have presented our approach to build a 3D display system based on digital holography. For wide viewing angle, we have presented several techniques such as measurement, time-sharing display, and coherent amplification. These techniques can advance the wavefront 3D display system to next stage.
In this paper, we analyze the limitation on the expressible depth range that is one major problem of integral imaging. We provide the explanation that exactly predicts the experimental results and the way to evaluate the expressible depth range numerically. We also give the design method for the multi-central depth plane integral imaging system. Finally, we will show the experimental results for verification.
We investigated an anti-aliasing (AA) filter for digital camera photography by which the excessively high-frequency components of the image signal are suppressed to avoid the aliasing effect. Our optomechanical AA filter was implemented by applying rapid relative motions to the imaging sensor. By the engineered motion blur of the mechanical dithers, the effective point-spread function (PSF) of the imaging system could be tailored to reject the unwanted high-frequency components of the image. For optimal operations, we developed a spiral filter motion protocol that could produce a Gaussian-like PSF. We experimentally demonstrated that our AA filter provides an improved filtering characteristic with a better compromise of the rejection performance and the signal loss. We also found that the pass band characteristic can be enhanced further by a color-differential acquisition mode. Our filter scheme provides a useful method of digital photography for low-error image measurements as well as for ordinary photographic applications where annoying $moir{\acute{e}}$ patterns must be suppressed efficiently.

An integral imaging system resorting to multiple birefringence lens arrays using Jones Matrix was analyzed and implemented. Each birefringence lens array was produced by placing a liquid crystal layer on a conventional lens array. Its depth of field was proved to be extended theoretically.
Linear array imaging sensors are widely used in remote sensing satellites. The final products of an imaging sensor can only be used when they are geometrically, radiometrically, and spectrally calibrated. Therefore, at the first stages of sensor design, a detailed calibration procedure must be carefully planned based on the accuracy requirements. In this paper, focusing on inherent optical distortion, a step-by-step procedure for laboratory geometric calibration of a typical push-broom satellite imaging sensor is simulated. The basis of this work is the simulation of a laboratory procedure in which a linear imager mounted on a rotary table captures images of a pin-hole pattern at different angles. By these images and their corresponding pinhole approximation, the correction function is extracted and applied to the raw images to give the corrected ones. The simulation results illustrate that using this approach, the nonlinear effects of distortion can be minimized and therefore the accuracy of the geometric position of this method on the image screen can be improved to better than the order of sub-pixel. On the other hand, the analyses can be used to proper laboratory facility selection based on the imaging sensor specifications and the accuracy.

Photo Acoustic Tomography (PAT) is a hybrid imaging modality which combines high contrast of optical imaging and spatial resolution of ultrasound imaging, thus it is suitable to image biological tissue noninvasively. Laser-induced photoacoustic signals were measured from a sample by means of an unfocused ultrasound transducer, then PAT image was reconstructed based on a universal back-projection algorithm. To evaluate the feasibility of our system, phantom test was performed, consequently, the PAT images obtained using our system showed highly analogous shape and volume with those of the phantom. This result demonstrated that our system can provide a powerful tool for imaging the substructure of biological tissue in non-invasive manner.
A wavefront coding (WFC) technique provides an extension of the depth of field for a microscopy imaging system with slight loss of image spatial resolution. Through the analysis of the relationship between the incidence angle of light at the phase mask and the system pupil function, a mixing symmetrical cubic phase mask (CPM) applied to 5X-40X micro-objectives is optimized simultaneously based on point-spread function (PSF) invariance and nonzero mean values of the modulation transfer function (MTF) near the spatial cut-off frequency. Optimization results of the CPM show that the depth of field of these micro-objectives is extended 3-10 times respectively while keeping their resolution. Further imaging simulations also prove its ability in enhancing the defocus imaging.

A new cross disciplinary conception of transitional aero-optics is built up during analyzing and measuring the linkage between the hypersonic boundary layer transition on a flat plate and the jittering characteristics of the small-aperture beam through that boundary layer. Based on that conception, the Small-Aperture Beam Technique (SABT) and high-speed Imaging Camera System (ICS) used in aero-optical studies are considered as new techniques for the assessment of the hypersonic transition in the boundary layer on a flat plate. In the FD-20 gun tunnel, for the free stream parameters with Mach number of 8 and unit Reynolds number of $1{\times}10^7$ (1/m), those two optical techniques are used to measure the jitter of the small-aperture beam. At the same free stream parameters, the distribution of the heat transfer along the centerline of the flat plate is also measured by the thin film resistance gauge technique. The results show the similarity of the increase trend between the heat transfer and the jitter of the small-aperture beam in the transitional region. It helps us to surmise that it may be feasible to diagnose the transition in a hypersonic boundary layer on a flat plate by means of those above optical techniques.
Integral imaging combined with photon-counting detection has been researched for three-dimensional information sensing under low-light-level conditions. This paper addresses the extraction of distance information with photon-counting integral imaging. The longitudinal distance to the object is obtained utilizing photon-counting elemental images. The pixel disparity is estimated by maximizing the nonlinear correlation of photocounts. The first- and second-order statistical properties of the nonlinear correlation are theoretically derived. In the experiments, these properties are verified by varying the mean number of photocounts in the scene. The average distance is compared to that from the intensity information, showing the robustness of the proposed system even at low photocounts.
This paper discusses a coherence-gated three-dimensional imaging system based on photorefractive holography, which was applied to imaging through turbid media with a view to developing biomedical instrumentation. A rapid response photorefractive device doped with 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenylidene malononitrile was used to generate the hologram grating. The estimated depth resolution was $20{\mu}m$, which corresponds to the coherence length of the light source. In this coherence imaging system, tomographic imaging of a 3-dimensional object composed of a $50{\mu}m$ thick cylindrical layer was achieved. The proposed coherence imaging system using an organic photorefractive material can be used as an optical tomography system for biological applications.
