  • Feature matching using image descriptors is robust method used recently. However, mismatches occur in 3D transformed images, illumination-changed images and repetitive-pattern images. In this paper, we observe that there are a lot of mismatches in the images which have repetitive patterns. We analyze it and propose a method to eliminate these mismatches. MDMF(Multiple Descriptors-based Mismatch Filtering) eliminates mismatches by using descriptors of nearest several features of one specific feature point. In experiments, for geometrical transformation like scale, rotation, affine, we compare the match ratio among SIFT, ASIFT and MDMF, and we show that MDMF can eliminate mismatches successfully.

  • Numerical analysis has been conducted to characterize deposition rates of aerosol particles onto a heated, rotating disk with electrostatic effect under the laminar flow field. The particle transport mechanisms considered were convection, Brownian diffusion, gravitational settling, thermophoresis and electrophoresis. The aerosol particles were assumed to have a Boltzmann charge distribution. The electric potential distribution needed to calculate local electric fields around the disk was calculated from the Laplace equation. The Coulomb, the image, the dielectrophoretic and the dipole-dipole forces acting on a charged particle near the conducting rotating disk were included in the analysis. The averaged particle deposition vetocities and their radial distributions on the upper surface of the disk were calculated from the particle concentration equation in a Eulerian frame of reference, along with a rotation speed of 0∼1,000rpm, a temperature difference of 0∼5K and a charged disk voltage of 0∼1000V.Finally, an approximate deposition velocity model for the rotating disk was suggested. The present numerical results showed relatively good agreement with the results of the present approximate model and the available experimental data.

  • In this paper, the recirculation flow motion and mixing characteristics driven by air bubble flow in a rectangular water tank is studied. The Time-resolved PIV technique is adopted for the quantitative visualization and analysis. 532 nm Diode CW laser is used for illumination and orange fluorescent particle images are acquired by a PCO 10bit high-speed camera. To obtain clean particle images, 545 nm long pass optical filter and an image intensifier are employed and the flow rates of compressed air is changed from 2 l/min to 4 l/min at 0.5 MPa. The recirculation and mixing flow field is further investigated by the POD analysis technique. It is observed that the large scale counterclockwise rotation and main vortex is generated in the upper half depth from the free surface and one quarter width from the sidewall. When the flow rates are increased, the main vortex core is moved to the side and bottom wall direction.

  • In this paper, we not only take advantage of the SIFT features in banknote recognition, which has robustness to illumination changes, geometric rotation as well as scale changes, but also propose the hierarchical banknote recognition algorithm, which comprised of feature vector extraction from the frame grabbed image of the banknotes, and matching to the prepared data base of multinational banknotes by ANN algorithm. The images of banknote under the developed UV, IR and white illumination are used so as to extract the SIFT features peculiar to each banknotes. These SIFT features are used in recognition of the nationality as well as face value. We confirmed successful function of the proposed algorithm by applying the proposed algorithm to the banknotes of Korean and USD as well as EURO.

  • In this paper, we introduce the fingerprint recognition system based on Radial Basis Function Neural Network(RBFNN). Fingerprints are classified as four types(Whole, Arch, Right roof, Left roof). The preprocessing methods such as fast fourier transform, normalization, calculation of ridge's direction, filtering with gabor filter, binarization and rotation algorithm, are used in order to extract the features on fingerprint images and then those features are considered as the inputs of the network. RBFNN uses Fuzzy C-Means(FCM) clustering in the hidden layer and polynomial functions such as linear, quadratic, and modified quadratic are defined as connection weights of the network. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm optimizes a number of essential parameters needed to improve the accuracy of RBFNN. Those optimized parameters include the number of clusters and the fuzzification coefficient used in the FCM algorithm, and the orders of polynomial of networks. The performance evaluation of the proposed fingerprint recognition system is illustrated with the use of fingerprint data sets that are collected through Anguli program.

  • The characteristics of starting flow of a six-blade Rushton turbine mixer were investigated by using a cinematic Particle Image Velocimetry technique. The flows were quantified by measurements of velocity fields with a 4 ms time interval for a blade rotational speed of 100 r.p.m, so that the turbine Reynolds number(ND$^2$/ ν) was fixed to 6,960. The radial shedding of the trailing vortices starts from passing four blades after the beginning of rotation. It clearly shows that the vortex pairing phenomena caused by the interactions between trailing cortices firm consequtive blades. The average convection velocity of the radial flow is found to be 28 % of the tip velocity. The starting flow seems to arrive at a steady state after 8 revolutions in this study, which corresponds nearly one circulation through the bulk flow trajectory with the average radial convection velocity.

  • The mechanization efficiency using high ability machines such as tractors or combines in a paddy field rice farm is high. Mechanization in harvesting fruits and vegetables is difficult, because they are easy to be damaged. Therefore, Advanced techniques for careful handling fruits and vegetables are necessary in automation and robotization. An apple harvesting robot must have a recognition device to detect the positioning of fruit, manipulators which function like human arms, and hand to take off the fruit. This study is related to the development of a rotatic hand as the first stage in developing the apple harvesting robot. The results are summarized as follows. 1. It was found that a hand that was eccentric in rotatory motion, was better than a hand of semicircular up-and-down motion in harvesting efficiency. 2. The hand was developed to control changes in grasp forces by using tape-type switch sensor which was attatched to fingers' inside. 3. Initial finger positioning was set up to control accurate harvesting by using a tow step fingering position. 4. This study showed the possibility of apple harvesting using the developed robot hand.

  • Using Brandt model the mess distribution of the late type spiral galaxy NGC 6946 was derived, and the total mass was reestimated to understand the M/L ratio of this galaxy. Two kinds of the rotation curve with shape parameter n=1 and 3.3 were examined. The following are the main results; (1) The total masses of NGC 6946 are $3.1\times$$10^{11}$ M(n=1) AND $2.8\times$$10^{11}$ M(n=3.3) respectively. and the corresponding M/L are about 17 and 16 for both cases. (2) The optical image in the blue light, whose radius is 9.6 kpc, has 8$\times$$10^{10}$ M and 1.4$\times$$10^{11}$ M. These give the value of M/L about 5 and 8 respectively. (3) The masses and M/L of the nuclear region within 1.2 kpc are 4.0$\times$$10^{9}$ M 4.7$\times$$10^9$ M and 3, 4 for both cases. Those of the disk from 1.2 kpc to 9.6 kpc are 7.6$\times$1$10^{10}$M, 1.4$\times$$10^{11}$M, and 5, 8. (4) The masses of the outer halo extended to few hundreds kiloparsecs are 2.3$\times$$10^{11}$ M and 1.4$\times$$10^{11}$M. The corresponding M/L are about 62 and 37.

  • The flow and noise characteristics of wake behind wind-turbine blades have been investigated experimentally using a two-frame particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. Experiments were carried out in a POSTECH subsonic large wind-tunnel ($1.8^W{\times}1.5^H{\times}4.3^L\;m^3$) with KBP-750D (3-blade type) wind-turbine model at a freestream velocity of $U_o\;=\;15\;m/s$ and a tip speed ratio $\lambda\;=\;6.14$ (2933 rpm). The wind-turbine blades are connected to an AC servo motor, brake, encoder and torque meter to control the rotational speed and to extract a synchronization signal for PIV measurements. The wake flow was measured at four azimuth angles ($\phi\;=\;0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$) of the wind-turbine blade. The dominant flow structure of the wake is large-scale tip vortices. The turbulent statistics such as turbulent intensity are weakened as the flow goes downstream due to turbulent dissipation. The dominant peak frequency of the noise signal is identical to the rotation frequency of blades. The noise seems to be mainly induced by the tip vortices.

  • Pod shape of twenty soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) genotypes was evaluated quantitatively by image analysis using elliptic Fourier descriptors and their principal components. The closed contour of each pod projection was extracted, and 80 elliptic Fourier coefficients were calculated for each contour. The Fourier coefficients were standardized so that they were invariant of size, rotation, shift, and chain code starting point. Then, the principal components on the standardized Fourier coefficients were evaluated. The cumulative contribution at the fifth principal component was higher than $95\%$, indicating that the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth principal components represented the aspect ratio of the pod, the location of the pod centroid, the sharpness of the two pod tips and the roundness of the base in the pod contour, respectively. Analysis of variance revealed significant genotypic differences in these principal components and seed number per pod. As the principal components for pod shape varied continuously, pod shape might be controlled by polygenes. It was concluded that principal component scores based on elliptic Fourier descriptors yield seemed to be useful in quantitative parameters not only for evaluating soybean pod shape in a soybean breeding program but also for describing pod shape for evaluating soybean germplasm.
