  • In this study, we compare two image denoising methods which are the Rudin-Osher-Fatemi total variation (TV) model and the nonlocal means (NLM) algorithm on medical images. To evaluate those methods, we used two well known measuring metrics. The methods are tested with a CT image, one X-Ray image, and three MRI images. Experimental result shows that the NML algorithm can give better results than the ROF TV model, but computational complexity is high.

  • Internal cracks in products are invisible and can lead to fatal crashes or damage. Since X-rays can penetrate materials and be attenuated according to the material’s thickness and density, they have rapidly become the accepted technology for non-destructive inspection of internal cracks. This paper presents a robust crack filter based on local gray level variation and multiscale analysis for automatic detection of cracks in X-ray images. The proposed filter takes advantage of the image gray level and its local variations to detect cracks in the X-ray image. To overcome the problems of image noise and the non-uniform intensity of the X-ray image, a new method of estimating the local gray level variation is proposed in this paper. In order to detect various sizes of crack, this paper proposes using different neighboring distances to construct an image pyramid for multiscale analysis. By use of local gray level variation and multiscale analysis, the proposed crack filter is able to detect cracks of various sizes in X-ray images while contending with the problems of noise and non-uniform intensity. Experimental results show that the proposed crack filter outperforms the Gaussian model based crack filter and the LBP model based method in terms of detection accuracy, false detection ratio and processing speed.

  • In this study, we have constructed the acoustic microscope using quadrature technique and analyzed the relative variation of image intensity and the quality of image by reconstructing the amplitude and phase image for surface defects with tiny hight variation. In this experiment, we have constructed the scanning acoustic microscope using the focused transducer with 3㎒ center frequency and the quadrature detector. And we have fabricated aluminum samples with round defects whose depth is different and reconstructed the amplitude and phase images for the samples. One sample has round defects with 2㎜ diameter and 100㎛ depth and the other has round defects with 4㎜ diameter and 5㎜ depth. In the result of line scanning for the sample with 100㎛ round defects, it has been shown that the variation rate of amplitude image intensity is 7% and the variation rate of phase image intensity is 89%. The phase image has better contrast than amplitude image for the sample. In contrast to this, the amplitude image has better contrast than phase image for the sample with 5㎜ depth's defects. Accordingly there is big difference between amplitude image and phase image for depth variation of defects whose boundary is 1 wavelength. Consequently the acoustic microscope using quadrature detector can be evaluated efficiently more than using envelope detector, for detecting defects which have height variation less than 1 wavelength. And also the phase image and the amplitude image can be used for detecting defects of tiny height variation with complimentary relation.

  • Image quality and selection of optimized window for good quality reconstruction in coronary angiography using multi-detector row CT (MDCT) have not been studied by heart rate and its variation. Therefore, the effect of heart rate and its variation was systemically analyzed. Eighty-three patients were undergone contrast-enhanced coronary angiography using MDCT. In this study, sixty cases were enrolled. Two radiologists graded image quality as follows: 4, excellent; 3, good; 2, fair; l, bad. The starting points of the reconstruction window were chosen at seventy and forty percent of R wave interval. Optimized window was scored as 1 when 40% reconstruction was better quality than 70%, as 2 when 40% reconstruction is same as 70%, and as 3 when 70% reconstruction was better than 40%. Regression analysis was performed. The range of variation of beats per minute (BPM) was well correlated with image quality (r=-0.55, p=0.000), however correlation with optimized window percentage was not statistically significant (p=0.969). By contraries, median value of BPM was comparatively well correlated with optimized window grade (r=-0.24, p=0.086). Median value of BPM was not well correlated with image quality (r=0.l70, p=0.l97). Image quality is more affected by variation of heart rate (VHR) than by higher heart rate. Selection of optimized reconstruction window for good image quality is mainly affected by heart rate and there is a tendency that systolic phase reconstruction is better in image quality than diastolic reconstruction in higher heart rate.

  • In this study, a visual sensor system which can detect I-butt weld joint with height variation and includes a seam tracking algorithm was investigated. Three-dimensional position of an object can be acquired by using the method of distance measurement, i.e., an optical trigonometry which results from the spatial relations between the camera, the object and the structured light by a visible laser. Effects of laser intensity and iris number for the image quality as well as object material were investigated for the optical system design. For the image processing, a region of interest is defined from the whole image and a line image of laser is drew by using the gray level difference in the image. From the drew laser line, the weld joint can be recognized in searching the biggest point position calculated from the central difference method. Through a series of welding experiments, a good tracking performance was confirmed under GMA welding.

  • In this paper, we first propose a new total variation-based regularization model for image restoration. We next propose a fixed-point-like method for solving the new image restoration model, and then we provide convergence analysis for the fixed-point-like method. To evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of the fixed-point-like method for the new proposed total variation-based regularization model, we provide numerical experiments for several test problems.

  • This paper presents the unified Bayesian Tikhonov regularization method as a solution to total variation regularization. The integrated method presents a formula for obtaining the regularization parameter by transforming the total variation term into a weighted Tikhonov regularization term. It repeats until the reconstructed image converges to obtain a regularization parameter and a new weighting factor based on it. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method for the image restoration problem.

  • In the paper, the Image SNR(Signal-to-Noise) distribution proposed in [1] is reviewed from the three points of views: verification, variation, and application of the distribution. First, the proposed Image SNR distribution is verified through the noise-based simulation over a 2D image detector. Second, its variation over the linear/nonlinear gains shows that the noise-effect itself cannot explain every reason for the degraded Image SNR distribution. Third, through the application to optimal selection of the operation parameters, the usefulness of the proposed distribution is clarified.
