Feasibility Study of Improved Patch Group Prior Based Denoising (PGPD) Technique with Medical Ultrasound Imaging System

  • The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate image quality using intensity profile, coefficient of variation (COV), and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) with respect to noise reduction techniques in the ultrasound images. For that purpose, we compared with the median filter, Rudin-Osher-Fatemi (ROF), Anscombe and proposed patch group prior based denoising (PGPD) techniques. To evaluate image quality, the Shepp-Logan phantom and the ultrasound image were acquired using simulation and experiment, respectively. According to the results, the difference of intensity profile using PGPD technique is lowest compared with original Shepp-Logan phantom. In simulation, the measured COV was 0.249, 0.198, 0.198, 0.177, and 0.080 using noisy, median, ROF, Anscombe and PGPD technique, respectively. Also, in experimental image, the measured COV was 0.245, 0.230, 0.231, 0.242 and 0.187 using noisy, median, ROF, Anscombe and PGPD technique, respectively. Especially, when we used PGPD technique, the PSNR has highest value in both simulation and experiment. In this study, we performed simulation and experiment study to compare various denoising techniques in the ultrasound image. We can expect the PGPD technique to improve in medical diagnosis with excellent noise reduction.

  • Applications of LCD panel are getting more increased for motion-image applications. However, when the motion-images are displayed on LCD panels, they may be blurred due to slow response time of liquid crystal (LC). One of the solutions of the problem is overdrive technique. The technique has a lot of memory usage. In this paper, we propose a reduction method of the frame memory that is required for LCD overdrive. Proposed overdrive architecture consists of line-based lifting integer (5, 3) DWT filter for image data reduction and BLI (Bi-Linearly Interpolation) LUT for pixel value accelerating.

  • In order to increase the survivability of combatant ship, measuring and analyzing the infrared radiation is important. Consequently, providing analysis report is also important for the progress of the new combatant ship design. This paper proposes a design and software implementation of filtering for the noise reduction of mid-wave IR camera image. We reduced the total test cost by using the suggested software filtering technique instead of hardware replacement or re-calibration. In addition, we enhanced the accuracy of analysis results by adjusting the parameters of software filtering according to the results of filtered image.

  • Noise reduction in the image is very important to improve the quality of the image. This paper discusses a new noise reduction technique which uses the On/Off spatio-temporal structure of the receptive fields. Also this paper proposes a structurally improved artificial vision system which incorporates the sphere type retina structure, an improved On/Off spatio-temporal receptive fields structure, and chiasm for hemianopia testing.

Bitrate Reduction in Vector Quantization System Using a Dynamic Index Mapping (동적 인텍스 매핑을 이용한 벡터 양자화 시스템에서의 비트율 감축)

  • This paper proposes an efficient noiseless encoding method of vector quantization(VQ) index using a dynamic index mapping. Using high interblock correlation, the proposed index mapper transforms an index into a new one with lower entropy. In order to achieve good performance with low computational complexity, we adopt 'the sum of differences in pixel values on the block boundaries' as the cost function for index mapping. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme reduces the average bitrate by 40 - 50 % in ordinary VQ system for image compression. In addition, it is shown that the proposed index mapping method can be also applied to mean-residual VQ system, which allows the reduction of bitrate for VQ index by 20 - 30 %(10 - 20 % reduction in total bitrate). Since the proposed scheme is one for noiseless encoding of VQ index, it provides the same quality of the reconstructed image as the conventional VQ system.

  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid filter for noise reduction. The proposed method adjusts rational filtering direction according to an edge in the image using median filtered data. Rational filter modulates the coefficients of a linear lowpass filter to limit its action in presence of image details. By the ratio of polynomials in the input variables, rational filter reduces noise adaptively. Median filter is widely used to reduce impulse noise, but removes some details for highly corrupted images. Also, desirable details are removed when the window size is large. Our proposed algorithm combines rational filter and median filter. Thus, proposed method not only preserves edge, but also reduces noise in uniform region. Experimental results show that our proposed method has better quality than those by existing median and rational filtering methods.

  • A technique for fast image reduction or expansion, in which the reduction(expansion) factor is either any integer or any rational number M/L Is represented. The multiresolution is modeled as an interpolation and filtering followed by a decimation. The model enables frequency domain analysts of the muitiresolution representations as well as convenient design of the Kernels(filters). Using any rin linear phase(Type I) filters a fine to coarse multiresolution structure can be generated.

  • In this paper, we propose a wavelet - based image noise reduction algorithm. We develop wavelet transform of existing Mallat Tree method. First, we propose a multiple filtering method. Maximizes the energy concentration characteristic of the wavelet transform considering the energy of each subband in the wavelet domain. We apply the proposed multiple filtering to the noise image. Finds energy subbands that can not be seen in normal images and removes them to remove noise.

  • We tried to design and manufacture an iris photographing optical-system which is used in the Oriental medicine or medical diagnostics. The whole system consists of a light source part, an image focusing part, a CCD transfer part and a diagnosis S/W. We designed the image focusing part to the reduction optical-system with 0.58X magnification of which the chromatic aberration is removed by using materials of FD60 and BACD5. The image focusing part's localization did big contribution in coot reduction of products. The manufactured iris photographing optical-system had superior performance in aspect that has stereoscopic effects of images in comparison with the foreigner's.

  • Cellular Automata is a discrete dynamical system that can be completely described in terms of local relation. For any given image, the system can save its features as well as increase or decrease the brightness of it locally through consideration of optimized transition in succession. These transitions in succession satisfy the function "Lyapunov" and have sequential movements. This study suggests the way of noise reduction for each image with the use of the Sequential Cellular Automata system. The mentioned transition in succession gives stable results with high-convergence performance to random noises and PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) using histograms and MSE (Mean Square Error) for verification of effectiveness.
