In this paper, we proposed a liver extracting procedure for computer aided liver diagnosis system. Extraction of liver region in an abdominal CT image is difficult due to interferences of other organs. For this reason, liver region is extracted in a region of interest(ROI). ROI is selected by the window which can measure the distribution of Hounsfield Unit(HU) value of liver region in an abdominal CT image. The distribution is measured by an existential probability of HU value of lever region in the window. If the probability of any window is over 50%, the center point of the window would be assigned to ROI. Actually, liver region is not clearly discerned from the adjacent organs like muscle, spleen, and pancreas in an abdominal CT image. Liver region is extracted by the watershed segmentation algorithm which is effective in this situation. Because it is very sensitive to the slight valiance of contrast, it generally produces over segmentation regions. Therefore these regions are required to merge into the significant regions for optimal segmentation. Finally, a liver region can be selected and extracted by prier information based on anatomic information.

Medical image segmentation techniques based on convolution neural networks indulge in feature extraction triggering redundancy of parameters and unsatisfactory target localization, which outcomes in less accurate segmentation results to assist doctors in diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a multi-level semantic-rich encoding-decoding network, which consists of a Pooling-Conv-Former (PCFormer) module and a Cbam-Dilated-Transformer (CDT) module. In the PCFormer module, it is used to tackle the issue of parameter explosion in the conservative transformer and to compensate for the feature loss in the down-sampling process. In the CDT module, the Cbam attention module is adopted to highlight the feature regions by blending the intersection of attention mechanisms implicitly, and the Dilated convolution-Concat (DCC) module is designed as a parallel concatenation of multiple atrous convolution blocks to display the expanded perceptual field explicitly. In addition, MultiHead Attention-DwConv-Transformer (MDTransformer) module is utilized to evidently distinguish the target region from the background region. Extensive experiments on medical image segmentation from Glas, SIIM-ACR, ISIC and LGG demonstrated that our proposed network outperforms existing advanced methods in terms of both objective evaluation and subjective visual performance.

Recently, Fire watching and dangerous substances monitoring system has been being developed to enhance various fire related security. It is generally assumed that fire flame extraction plays a very important role on this monitoring system. In this study, we propose the fire flame extraction method of Non-Residential Facilities based on core object extraction in image. A core object is defined as a comparatively large object at center of the image. First of all, an input image and its decreased resolution image are segmented. Segmented regions are classified as the outer or the inner region. The outer region is adjacent to boundaries of the image and the rest is not. Then core object regions and core background regions are selected from the inner region and the outer region, respectively. Core object regions are the representative regions for the object and are selected by using the information about the region size and location. Each inner region is classified into foreground or background region by comparing its values of a color histogram intersection of the inner region against the core object region and the core background region. Finally, the extracted core object region is determined as fire flame object in the image. Through experiments, we find that to provide a basic measures can respond effectively and quickly to fire in non-residential facilities.
This paper addresses a problem of extraction of parameteric motion estimation and structural motion segmentation for compact image sequence representation and object-based generic video coding. In order to extract meaningful motion structure from image sequences, a direct parameteric motion estimation based on a pre-segmentation is proposed. The pre-segmentation which considers the motion of the moving objects is canied out based on probabilistic clustering with mixture models using optical flow and image intensities. Parametric motion segmentation can be obtained by iterated estimation of motion model parameters and region reassignment according to a criterion using Gauss-Newton iterative optimization algorithm. The efficiency of the proposed methoo is verified with computer simulation using elF real image sequences.
In the medical image application the difference of intensity is widely used for the image segmentation and feature extraction, and a well known method is the threshold technique that determines a threshold value and generates a binary image based on the threshold. A frequently-used threshold technique is the Otsu algorithm that provides efficient processing and effective selection criterion for choosing the threshold value. However, we cannot get good segmentation results by applying the Otsu algorithm to chest X-ray images. It is because there are various organic structures around lung regions such as ribs and blood vessels, causing unclear distribution of intensity levels. To overcome the ambiguity, we propose in this paper an effective algorithm to extract pulmonary regions that utilizes the Otsu algorithm after removing the background of an X-ray image, constructs intensity-level maps, and uses them for segmenting the X-ray image. To verify the effectiveness of our method, we compared it with the existing 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional Otsu algorithms, and also the results by expert's naked eyes. The experimental result showed that our method achieved the more accurate extraction of pulmonary regions compared to the Otsu methods and showed the similar result as the naked eye's one.

Image segmentation is the process where an image is segmented into regions that are set of homogeneous pixels. The result has a ciritical effect on accuracy of image understanding. In this paper, an Markov random field (MRF) image segmentation is proposed using genetic algorithm(GA). We model an image using MRF which is resistant to noise and blurring. While MRF based methods are robust to degradation, these require accurate parameter estimation. So GA is used as a segmentation algorithm which is effective at dealing with combinatorial problems. The efficiency of the proposed method is shown by experimental results with real images and application to automatic vehicle extraction system.
In this paper, we propose a novel background segmentation and feature point extraction method of a human motion for the augmented reality game. First, our method transforms input image from RGB color space to HSV color space, then segments a skin colored area using double threshold of H, S value. And it also segments a moving area using the time difference images and then removes the noise of the area using the Hessian affine region detector. The skin colored area with the moving area is segmented as a human motion. Next, the feature points for the human motion are extracted by calculating the center point for each block in the previously obtained image. The experiments on various input images show that our method is capable of correct background segmentation and feature points extraction 12 frames per second.
In this paper we propose a new robust method to extract accurate human silhouettes indoors with active stereo camera. A prime application is for gesture recognition of mobile robots. The segmentation of distant moving objects includes many problems such as low resolution, shadows, poor stereo matching information and instabilities of the object and background color distributions. There are many object segmentation methods based on color or stereo information but they alone are prone to failure. Here efficient color, stereo and image segmentation methods are fused to infer object and background areas of high confidence. Then the inferred areas are incorporated in graph cut to make human silhouette extraction robust and accurate. Some experimental results are presented with image sequences taken using pan-tilt stereo camera. Our proposed algorithms are evaluated with respect to ground truth data and proved to outperform some methods based on either color/stereo or color/contrast alone.

Extracting the brain from magnetic resonance imaging head scans is an essential preprocessing step of which the accuracy greatly affects subsequent image analysis. The currently popular Brain Extraction Tool produces a brain mask which may be too smooth for practical use to reduce the accuracy. This paper presents a novel and indirect brain extraction method based on non-brain tissue segmentation. Based on ITK, the proposed method allows a non-brain contour by using region growing to match with the original image naturally and extract the brain tissue. Experiments on two set of MRI data and 2D brain image in horizontal plane and 3D brain model indicate successful extraction of brain tissue from a head.

To classify the vehicle targets automatically using thermal images, there are usually two main categories of feature extraction method, local and shape feature extraction methods. Since thermal images have less texture information than color images, the shape feature extraction method is useful when the segmentation results are correct. However, if there are some errors in target segmentation, the shape feature may contain some errors, then the classification accuracy can be decreased. To overcome these problems, in this paper, we propose the segmentation reliability estimation method for target classification. The segmentation reliability can be estimated by using the difference information of average intensities and edge energies between the target and the background area. The estimated segmentation reliability is applied in the decision level fusion method of classification results using both shape and local features. Experiment results using the thermal images of the vehicle targets (main battle tank, armored personnel carrier, military truck, and an estate car) show that the proposed classification method and the segmentation reliability estimation method have a good performance in classification accuracy.
