  • In order to accurately perform multispectral imaging using a multiplexed illumination, intensity of illumination in a scene must be uniform. For image acquisition that requires accurate color information, even if not multispectral imaging, the illumination information must be accurate, and a flat light source or illumination calibration is performed for accurate illumination characteristics. In this paper, we propose a method of color correction to uniformly illuminate an image with non-uniform illumination intensity. The proposed method uses multispectral imaging instead of illumination calibration for color correction. First of all, we perform multispectral imaging with two images obtained from non-uniformity illumination to acquire spectral reflectance. The obtained reflection spectrum is relit as the illumination characteristic of the image obtained from general planar light such as fluorescent light or sunlight. By comparing the image obtained by relighting with the uniformly illuminated image, the non-uniformity of the illumination is confirmed, and the color correction is performed as the image obtained from the uniform image. It is expected that the experimental results will confirm whether the non-uniformity of the illumination is uniformly corrected and reduce the restriction of illumination in obtaining the color information of the image.

  • In this paper, the illumination performances of three freeform lenses optimally designed for a point source were investigated for several LEDs with different source sizes, and also the tolerance characteristics of the lenses were analyzed. For comparison, two lenses with different sizes were designed with a divergent illumination model, and the last one was done with an overlapped illumination model. As the LED source size increased, the illuminance uniformity decreased more strongly, and the influence of a source misalignment on illumination performance became insignificant. However, the variation of LED radiation characteristics had strong effect on the illumination performance, irrespective of LED source size. Even though the lens based on a divergent illumination model showed superior performance compared to the lens based on an overlapped illumination model, the latter was less sensitive to the variation of LED radiation characteristics.

  • Color in an image is determined by illuminant and surface reflectance. So, to recover unique color of object, estimation of exact illuminant is needed. In this study, the illumination models suggested to get the object color constancy with the physical illumination model based on physical phenomena. Their characteristics and application limits are presented and the necessity of an extended illumination model is suggested to get more appropriate object colors recovered. The extended illumination model should contain an additional term for the ambient light in order to account for spatial variance of illumination in object images. Its necessity is verified through an experiment under simple lighting environment in this study. Finally, a reconstruction method for recovering input images under standard white light illumination is experimented and an useful method for computing object color reflectivity is suggested and experimented which can be induced from combination of the existing illumination models.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved distributed multi-view video coding method that is robust to illumination changes among different views. The use of view dependency is not effective for multi-view video because each view has different intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters. In this paper, a modified distributed multi-view coding method is presented that applies illumination compensation when generating side information. The proposed encoder codes DC values of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients separately by entropy coding. The proposed decoder can generate more accurate side information by using the transmitted DC coefficients to compensate for illumination changes. Furthermore, AC coefficients are coded with conventional entropy or channel coders depending on the frequency band. We found that the proposed algorithm is about 0.1~0.5 dB better than conventional algorithms.

  • In this research, an overlapped illumination model was newly proposed for designing a freeform LED lens with a uniform illuminance distribution on its illuminating plane. Based on the proposed model and conventional illumination models, freeform lenses were designed and their performances and tolerances were compared. As a result of the tolerance analysis about thickness change in lens, position, size change, central direction change of light emission and characteristic change in LED source. This proposed model and divergent illumination model are similar to the performance about central direction change of light emission in LED source. but the uniformity illumination value in this proposed model is more remarkably value than it in divergent illumination model about characteristic change in LED source.

  • In this research, the overlapped illumination model was used for designing a freeform LED lens with a uniform illuminance distribution on its illuminating plane, and their performances and tolerances were compared. And, the illuminations on a illumination plane was measures for change with average illuminance and illuminance uniformity. As a result of the tolerance analysis about z-axis direction change, thickness change in lens and tilt change of light emission and characteristic change in LED source, overlapped model and divergent illumination model are similar to the performance about Z-axis direction change of light emission in LED source. but the uniformity illumination value in this overlapped model is more remarkably value than it in divergent illumination model about thickness change in LED lens. Also, even though the lens based on a divergent illumination model showed good performance compare to the lens based on an overlapped illumination model, the latter was less the deviation to variation of LED beam radiation ability.

  • This study presents a new method to improve the speed of high quality volume rendering. We improve the speed of ambient occlusion which is one of the global illumination techniques used in traditional volume visualization. Calculating ambient occlusion takes much time because it determines an illumination value of a sample by integrating opacities of nearby samples. This study proposes an improved method for this by using local statistics such as averages and standard deviations. We calculate local statistics for each volume block, a set of nearby samples, in pre-processing time. In the rendering process, we efficiently determine the illumination value by assuming the density distribution as a normal distribution. As the results, we can generate high quality images that combine ambient occlusion illumination with local illumination in real time.

  • To combat the adverse impact imposed by illumination variation in the face recognition process, an effective and feasible algorithm is proposed in this paper. Firstly, an enhanced local texture feature is presented by applying the central symmetric encode principle on the fused component images acquired from the wavelet decomposition. Then the proposed local texture features are combined with Deep Belief Network (DBN) to gain robust deep features of face images under severe illumination conditions. Abundant experiments with different test schemes are conducted on both CMU-PIE and Extended Yale-B databases which contain face images under various illumination condition. Compared with the DBN, LBP combined with DBN and CSLBP combined with DBN, our proposed method achieves the most satisfying recognition rate regardless of the database used, the test scheme adopted or the illumination condition encountered, especially for the face recognition under severe illumination variation.

  • This study suggests a binarization method that minimizes information loss for night illumination images. The object of the night illumination image is an image which is not focused due to the influence of illumination and is not identifiable. Also, the image has a brightness area in only a part of the brightness histogram. So the existing simple binarization method is hard to get good results. The proposed binarization method uses image segmentation method and image merging method. In the stepwise divided blocks, we divide into two regions using the triangular type of fuzzy logic. The value 0 of the membership degree is binarized at the present step, and the value of the membership degree 1 is binarized after the next step. Experimental results show that night illumination images with minimal loss of information can be obtained in a dark area brightness range.

  • With the increasing popularity of mobile devices, it has become necessary to protect private information and content in these devices. Face recognition has been favored over conventional passwords or security keys, because it can be easily implemented using a built-in camera, while providing user convenience. However, because mobile devices can be used both indoors and outdoors, there can be many illumination changes, which can reduce the accuracy of face recognition. Therefore, we propose a new face recognition method on a mobile device robust to illumination variations. This research makes the following four original contributions. First, we compared the performance of face recognition with illumination variations on mobile devices for several illumination normalization procedures suitable for mobile devices with low processing power. These include the Retinex filter, histogram equalization and histogram stretching. Second, we compared the performance for global and local methods of face recognition such as PCA (Principal Component Analysis), LNMF (Local Non-negative Matrix Factorization) and LBP (Local Binary Pattern) using an integer-based kernel suitable for mobile devices having low processing power. Third, the characteristics of each method according to the illumination va iations are analyzed. Fourth, we use two matching scores for several methods of illumination normalization, Retinex and histogram stretching, which show the best and $2^{nd}$ best performances, respectively. These are used as the inputs of an SVM (Support Vector Machine) classifier, which can increase the accuracy of face recognition. Experimental results with two databases (data collected by a mobile device and the AR database) showed that the accuracy of face recognition achieved by the proposed method was superior to that of other methods.
