  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate biomechanical changes of the lower limb including dynamic stability with changes in illumination (300Lx, 150Lx, and 5Lx) and slope (level and $15^{\circ}$ downhill) as risk factors for elderly falls. Method : Fifteen elderly females were selected for this study. Seven infrared cameras (Proreflex MCU 240: Qualisys, Sweden) and an instrumented treadmill (Bertec, USA) surrounded by illumination regulators and lights to change the levels of illumination were used to collect the data. A One-Way ANOVA with repeated measures using SPSS 12.0 was used to analyze statistical differences by the changes in illumination and slope. Statistical significance was set at ${\alpha}=.05$. Results : No differences in the joint movement of the lower limbs were found with changes in illumination (p>.05). The maximum plantar flexion movement of the ankle joints appeared to be greater at 5Lx compared to 300Lx during slope gait (p<.05). Additionally, maximum extension movement of the hip joints appeared to be greater at 5Lx and 150Lx compared to 300Lx during slope gait (p<.05). The maximum COM-COP angular velocity (direction to medial side of the body) of dynamic stability appeared to be smaller at 150Lx and 300Lx compared to 5Lx during level gait (p<.05). The minimum COM-COP angular velocity (direction to lateral side to the body) of dynamic stability appeared smaller at 150Lx compared to 5Lx during level gait (p<.05). Conclusion : In conclusion, elderly people use a stabilization strategy that reduces walk speed and dynamic stability as darkness increases. Therefore, the changes in illumination during gait induce the changes in gait mechanics which may increase the levels of biomechanical risk in elderly falls.

  • Machine vision inspection systems have replaced human inspectors in defect inspection fields for several decades. However, the inspection results of machine vision are often affected by small changes of illumination. When small changes of illumination appear in image histograms, the influence of illumination can be decreased by transformation of the histogram. In this paper, we propose an enhanced histogram matching algorithm which corrects distorted histograms by variations of illumination. We use the resolution resizing method for an optimal matching of input and reference histograms and reduction of quantization errors from the digitizing process. The proposed algorithm aims not only for improvement of the accuracy of defect detection, but also robustness against variations of illumination in machine vision inspection. The experimental results show that the proposed method maintains uniform inspection error rates under dramatic illumination changes whereas the conventional inspection method reveals inconsistent inspection results in the same illumination conditions.

  • A detection algorithm, based on the combined local-global (CLG) optical-flow model and Gaussian pyramid for a moving target appearing against a dynamic background, can compensate for the inadaptability of the classic Horn-Schunck algorithm to illumination changes and reduce the number of needed calculations. Incorporating the hypothesis of gradient conservation into the traditional CLG optical-flow model and combining structure and texture decomposition enable this algorithm to minimize the impact of illumination changes on optical-flow estimates. Further, calculating optical-flow with the Gaussian pyramid by layers and computing optical-flow at other points using an optical-flow iterative with higher gray-level points together reduce the number of calculations required to improve detection efficiency. Finally, this proposed method achieves the detection of a moving target against a dynamic background, according to the background motion vector determined by the displacement and magnitude of the optical-flow. Simulation results indicate that this algorithm, in comparison to the traditional Horn-Schunck optical-flow algorithm, accurately detects a moving target undergoing illumination changes against a dynamic background and simultaneously demonstrates a significant reduction in the number of computations needed to improve detection efficiency.

  • This paper focuses on the study of the face authentication system and the robustness of fact authentication methods under illumination changes. Four different face authentication methods are tried. These methods are as fellows; PCA(Principal Component Analysis), GMM(Gaussian Mixture Modeis), 1D HMM(1 Dimensional Hidden Markov Models), Pseudo 2D HMM(Pseudo 2 Dimensional Hidden Markov Models). Experiment results involving an artificial illumination change to fate images are compared with each other. Face feature vector extraction based on the 2D DCT(2 Dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform) if used. Experiments to evaluate the above four different fate authentication methods are carried out on the ORL(Olivetti Research Laboratory) face database. Experiment results show the EER(Equal Error Rate) performance degrade in ail occasions for the varying ${\delta}$. For the non illumination changes, Pseudo 2D HMM is $2.54{\%}$,1D HMM is $3.18{\%}$, PCA is $11.7{\%}$, GMM is $13.38{\%}$. The 1D HMM have the bettor performance than PCA where there is no illumination changes. But the 1D HMM have worse performance than PCA where there is large illumination changes(${\delta}{\geq}40$). For the Pseudo 2D HMM, The best EER performance is observed regardless of the illumination changes.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved distributed multi-view video coding method that is robust to illumination changes among different views. The use of view dependency is not effective for multi-view video because each view has different intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters. In this paper, a modified distributed multi-view coding method is presented that applies illumination compensation when generating side information. The proposed encoder codes DC values of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients separately by entropy coding. The proposed decoder can generate more accurate side information by using the transmitted DC coefficients to compensate for illumination changes. Furthermore, AC coefficients are coded with conventional entropy or channel coders depending on the frequency band. We found that the proposed algorithm is about 0.1~0.5 dB better than conventional algorithms.

  • This study examined the changes in the walking pattern during level walking under low illumination conditions. Fourteen male subjects ($22.1{\pm}2.21$ years, $174{\pm}3.74\;cm$, $68.86{\pm}10.81\;kg$) with normal vision and no disabilities were enrolled in this study. All experiments were performed on a level walkway with three conditions: normal walking (preferred & low speed) and walking with low illumination. 3D motion capturing system was used for acquisition and analysis of the walking motion data with a sampling frequency of 120Hz. The walking speed, normalized jerk(NJ) at the center of mass(COM), wrist and heel, knee and elbow joint angle, ratio of the knee joint angle to elbow joint angle and the toe clearance on stance phase were used to compare the differences in walking pattern between the two illumination conditions, The results showed that the walking speed and joint angles decreased in low illumination, whereas the NJ and toe minimum clearance increased. In low illumination, most variables were similar to effects of low speed walking, but toe clearance was different from the effects of low speed. These results can be used as primary data for examining the changes in the level walking pattern of young adults under low illumination. Further study will be needed to compare these results in young adults with those in the elderly.

  • Real-Time object tracking has emerged as an important component in several application areas including machine vision. surveillance. Human-Computer Interaction. image-based control. and so on. And there has been developed various algorithms for a long time. But in many cases. they have showed limited results under uncontrolled situation such as illumination changes or cluttered background. In this paper. we present a novel. computationally efficient algorithm for tracking human face robustly under illumination changes and cluttered backgrounds. Previous algorithms usually defines color model as a 2D membership function in a color space without consideration for illumination changes. Our new algorithm developed here. however. constructs a 3D color model by analysing plenty of images acquired under various illumination conditions. The algorithm described is applied to a mobile head-eye robot and experimented under various uncontrolled environments. It can track an human face more than 100 frames per second excluding image acquisition time.

  • There are many image processing based algorithms and applications that fail when illumination change occurs. Therefore, the illumination change has to be detected then the illumination change occurred images need to be enhanced in order to keep the appropriate algorithm processing in a reality. In this paper, a new method for detecting illumination changes efficiently in a real time by using local region information and fuzzy logic is introduced. The effective way for detecting illumination changes in lighting area and the edge of the area was selected to analyze the mean and variance of the histogram of each area and to reflect the changing trends on previous frame's mean and variance for each area of the histogram. The ways are used as an input. The changes of mean and variance make different patterns w hen illumination change occurs. Fuzzy rules were defined based on the patterns of the input for detecting illumination changes. Proposed method was tested with different dataset through the evaluation metrics; in particular, the specificity, recall and precision showed high rates. An automatic parameter selection method was proposed for contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization method by using entropy of image through adaptive neural fuzzy inference system. The results showed that the contrast of images could be enhanced. The proposed algorithm is robust to detect global illumination change, and it is also computationally efficient in real applications.

  • We present an efficient face recognition method that is robust to illumination changes. We named the proposed method as SKKUfaces. We first compute eigenfaces from training images and then apply fisher discriminant analysis using the obtained eigenfaces that exclude eigenfaces correponding to first few largest eigenvalues. This way, SKKUfaces can achieve the maximum class separability without considering eigenfaces that are responsible for illumination changes, facial expressions and eyewear. In addition, we have developed a method that efficiently computes beween-scatter and within-scatter matrices in terms of memory space and computation time. We have tested the performance of SKKUfaces on the YALE and the SKKU face databases. Initial Experimental results show that SKKUfaces performs greatly better over Fisherfaces on the input images of large variations in lighting and eyewear.

  • This paper studies on the recognition rate change with respect to illumination variance and the confidence level of PCA(Principal Component Analysis) based face recognition by measuring the cumulative match score of CMC(Cumulative Match Characteristic). We studied on the confidence level of the algorithm under illumination changes and selection of training images not only by testing multiple training images per person with illumination variance and single training image and but also by changing the illumination conditions of testing images. The experiment shows that the recognition rate drops for multiple training image case compared to single training image case. We, however, confirmed the confidence level of the algorithm under illumination variance by the fact that the training image which corresponds to the identity of testing image belongs to upper similarity lists regardless of illumination changes and the number of training images.
