Tar spots have been observed on Ilex cornuta in Korea since 2015. Based on morphological and molecular analyses, the fungus responsible was determined to be a Rhytisma species, with characteristics similar to R. ilicis-latifoliae observed on Ilex latifolia from Japan. Herein, we document the first report of Rhytisma sp. on I. cornuta.
These studies had performed a plans for preservation and distribution of Ilex cormuta community Mt. Keumsung($35^{\circ}05'\;N,\;126^{\circ}04'\;E$) in Naju, Chonnam from Arpil, 1997 to October by Braun-Blanquet' method(1964). According to the vegetation table of community, the plant communities of the investigated sites were classified Ilex corunta-Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium commnity. Now there still remains the natural environment to be developed in coast district around the riverside distributing Ilex cornuta Lindl., so it has scientifically high value to predict change of the ecosystem and preserve the community distribution. It needs plan for preservation high value to predict change of the ecosystem and preserve the community distribution. It needs plan for preservation
A new taxon of Ilex is described from Wando Island, Province Jeonnam, Korea. Ilex x wandoensis C. F. Miller & M. Kim hybrid nov. originates from the natural hybridization of the parent species, I. cornuta Thunb. and I. integra Thunb. Leaves of the new taxon have smooth, spinose margins, a condition that is intermediate between the twisted, spinose leaf margins of I. cornuta and the smooth, entire margins of I. integra. The new hybrid species shares several characters with its two parents, including evergreen leaves, dioecy, and red drupes.
Background: Dioecious plant species having both male and female plants have been investigated regarding sex-related characteristics such as sex ratio, sex-differential resource requirements, and spatial segregation of the sexes. Habitat loss and fragmentation are major threats to the survival of plant populations, but dioecious species are particularly more prone to such habitat degradation than non-dioecious species because of their dimorphic sexual system. We examined the sex-related demographics of two Ilex cornuta populations being different regarding land use history. Methods: During 2016-2017, we examined I. cornuta trees with a basal diameter ${\geq}1.5cm$ in the Yongsu-ri population (YS population) and the Gotjawal Provincial Park population (GP population). Plant sex (male, female, or unsexed) was identified. The tree size (basal diameter and height of the main stem), clonal production (the ramet numbers per genet), and vitality for each clone were measured. The associations between population, sex, tree size, clonal production, and vitality were examined using ANOVAs and contingency table analyses. Finally, point pattern analyses using O-ring statistics were conducted to assess spatial patterns. Results: Upon excluding unsexed trees, the YS population with 74 trees was significantly male-biased (0.66), while the GP population with only 26 trees had a 1:1 sex ratio. In both populations, males and females did not differ in tree size. Although the mean number of ramets differed significantly between populations, females tended to produce more ramets than males. The proportion of weak trees was significantly higher in the YS than in the GP population. Neither population showed evidence of spatial segregation of the sexes. Conclusions: The two populations of dioecious I. cornuta are characterized by the small number of trees and relatively high frequencies of non-reproductive trees. Both indicate that these populations are quite susceptible to environmental and genetic stochasticity. On the other hand, the differences between populations in sex ratio, clonal production, and vitality suggest that conservation efforts for I. cornuta need to be population-specific. In order to help recover and enable this vulnerable species to persist, it is necessary to find ways to enhance their sexual reproduction and simultaneously reduce habitat disturbances due to anthropogenic activities.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of planting time on the survival rate and growth. Ilex cornuta Lindl., I. aquifolium 'Silver Queen', Ardisia pusilla 'Variegata', and Rhododendron indicum(Satsuki azalea) were planted in pottery pot six times such as April 1, June 1, July 1, August 1, October 1, and December 1 in 2017. The survival rate of I. cornuta Lindl. planted in April, October, and December was 100%, whereas the survival rates were 90% in June, 50% in July, and 60% in August, respectively. The survival rates of I. aquifolium 'Silver Queen' and R. schlippenbachii were also shown about 60% in July and 70% in August, which were lower than in the other planting times at 100%. However, the survival rate of A. pusilla 'Variegata' was shown 100% in the all planting times. The growth rates of plant length, plant height or leaf length or any others of I. cornuta Lindl. were shown 20.0%, 15.5% and 16.5% planted in June, July, and August, respectively, while those planted in April, October and December were 3.2%, 12.3% and 10.7% respectively. Similarly, the growth rates of leaf numbers and plant length of I. cornuta Lindl., A. pusilla 'Variegata', and R. indicum(Satsuki azalea) planted in summer season from June to August for all plat (not only leaf numbers and plant length in was facilitated, while the growth was restrained in planting for spring or autumn. Therefore, the plantation during summer is better for increasing the survival rate and promoting the growth.
This study was carried out to analyze the vegetation and soil characteristic, and ordination of the Ilex cornuta population, in the Yongsu Reservoir of Jeju Island. The Ilex cornuta population was classified into Cudrania tricuspidata dominant population, Sageretia theezans dominant population, and Mallotus japonicus dominant population. In the study sites, soil organic matter(O.M.), total nitrogen(T.N.), available phosphorus($P_2O_5$), changeable potassium, changeable calcium, changeable magnesium and soil pH were 14.62~17.35%, 0.39~0.51%, 8.83~20.15mg/kg, 0.44~0.64cmol+/kg, 5.79~6.87cmol+/kg, 3.43~4.19cmol+/kg and 5.41~5.80, respectively. The Mallotus japonicus dominant population was mainly found in the high percentage of available phosphorus, organic matter. It was also showed the lowest concentration of exchangeable K, and Mg. Cudrania tricuspidata dominant population and Sageretia theezans dominant population were found in the low percentage of available phosphorus, organic matter and there were also showed the highest concentration of exchangeable K, and Mg. It is one of the evidence that Ilex cornuta community indicated an intensive site management likes clearance of creeper is proper habitat management protocol. Thus, further researches should be followed to determine the other disturbance factors as management techniques.
Four kinds of leaves with different shapes of leaf blade were used as experimental materials to establish an optimum condition for treating leaves to obtain skeleton leaves. Effective concentration and length of soaking time in a hot NaOH solution, which resulted in high valued ornaments, were 60% (v/v) for 50 minutes for Acer buergerianum (palmatifid), 20% (v/v) for 50 minutes for Ilex cornuta (serrate), 20-60% (v/v) for 70 minutes for Quercus mongolia (lobed), and 20-40% (v/v) for 70 minutes for Quercus palustris (parted). Through a series of the process of soaking leaves in a hot NaOH solution, rinsing or brushing to remove mesophyll, drying, and dying, high quality ornaments could be obtained.
Genetic variation of Ilex cornuta Lindley et Paxton was examined by sequence analyses of ITS for 65 individuals from Korea and China. The length of ITS 1 ranged from 253 to 259 bp. The 5.8S was 159 bp and ITS2 was observed to be 231 bp. A total of 8 different ITS types (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism haplotypes), which showed the difference of 1 - 6 bp, were detected from 65 individuals. The sequence polymorphisms of ITS appeared at 9 different sites. All of four individuals collected at Daejeong-eup in Jeju-do exhibited different types, but all individuals from Naju-si and Muan-gun in Jeollanam-do were identical. The variation of ITS was higher in Jeju-do population than in inland population. Since I. cornuta contains various types of ITS sequences, ITS analyses will provide important information on genetic diversity and conservation of this species.
