  • The combustion test of LMP-103S, a propellant based on ADN(Ammonium Dinitramide), was performed with a 50 mN scale micro-thruster. The micro-thruster was made with photosensitive glass using MEMS manufacturing process. $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was used as a catalyst to decompose LMP-103S. After injecting 90 wt.% hydrogen peroxide into combustion chamber to preheat the catalyst, LMP-103S was injected for the combustion test. As a result, the ignition and combustion of LMP-103S was confirmed in platinum catalyst environment with the combustion chamber temperature going up to $650^{\circ}C$.

  • The method of methanol using in diesel engines hasn't been established yet because of it's low ignition characters. But many studies about it with many methods have been doing recently. If alcohol can be used in diesel engines, smoke and NO$\sub$x/, which is a big problem in diesel engines, can be reduced large. The purpose of this study is to establish using method of alcohol, as a substitute fuel. In this study, Combustion characters, engine performance and exhaust gas emissions are checked by using gasfication diesel method. Concluding remarks of this study are as follows. (1) Methanol can be used within 30% of total inducing energy, if above that rate, it can't be used because of knocking and bad operating condition. (2) Under the low load, the effect of methanol inducing of fuel consumption is somewhat bad, but under the high load, the effect is very good. (3) Under the high load, smoke limit is a marked improvement with methanol inducing.

  • The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the effects of thermal stratification and partial fuel stratification on reducing the pressure-rise rate and emission in HCCI combustion. The engine is fueled with Di-Methyl Ether(DME) which has unique 2-stage heat release. Computational work is conducted with multi-zones model and detailed chemical reaction scheme. Calculation result shows that wider thermal stratification and partial fuel stratification prolong combustion duration and reduce pressure rise rate. But too wide partial fuel stratification increases CO and NOx concentration in exhaust gas, and decreases combustion efficiency.

  • Traditional propellants which have a hypergolic characteristic have a high performance but also have disadvantages of toxicity and complex handling requirement. In order to replace these propellants, one of the alternatives is hydrogen peroxide which generates high temperature oxygen and water vapor after catalytic reaction. In this paper, autoignition characteristics of kerosene by decomposed hydrogen peroxide were investigated to perform fundamental research for designing a thruster using hydrogen peroxide and kerosene propellants. Contraction ratio, whether flame holder exists or not, and feeding pressure of propellants were selected as variables. From the experiments for different mixture ratio, we confirmed the ignition stability is strongly affected by a feeding pressure of propellants.

  • The confinement degradation of the energetic particles during RMP would be a key issue in success of realizing the successful energy production using fusion plasma, because a 3.5 MeV energetic alpha particle should be able to sustain the burning plasma after the ignition. As KSTAR recent results indicate the generation of high-performance plasma(${\beta}_p{\sim}3$), the confinement of the energetic particles is also an important key aspect in neutral beam driven plasma. In general, the measured absolute value of the neutron intensity is generally used for to estimating the confinement time of energetic particles by comparing it with the theoretical value based on transport calculations. However, the availability of, but for its calculation process, many accurate diagnostic data of plasma parameters such as thermal and incident fast ion density, are essential to the calculation process. In this paper, the time evolution of the neutron signal from an He3 counter during the beam blank has permitted to facilitate the estimation of the slowing down time of energetic particles and the method is applied to investigate the fast ion effect on ELM suppressed KSTAR plasma which is heated by high energy deuterium neutral beams.

  • This study conducted a simulation to observe the performance of a multi-turbocharged gasoline internal combustion engine for a high-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (HALE UAV). The WAVE 1-D engine simulation software from Ricardo was used for the engine system modeling and simulation. The specifications of a 2.4-L four cylinder gasoline engine from commercial vehicles and maps of commercial vehicle turbochargers were applied to the multi-stage turbocharged engine system model. Three turbochargers and intercoolers were installed in series for the appropriate intake of pressure for the gasoline engine at a high altitude of 60,000 ft. There was one wastegate for the turbochargers. The operability of the engine system was analyzed via this simulation model.

  • The mechanical deformation of a battery separator causes internal short-circuiting of the cathode - anode, which directly affects the explosion/ignition of batteries. To increase the mechanical properties of the separator fabricated by electro-spinning, use of a thermal pressing method is inevitable. Therefore, this research aims to maximize the mechanical strength of a porous separator by finding the proper thermal press temperatures given to Electro-spun Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers. The different thermal press temperatures $25^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, $75^{\circ}C$, and $100^{\circ}C$ were applied to the electro-spun fiber at 30 MPa pressure for one hour. The higher the temperature, the higher the resultant tensile strength; however, a higher temperature also lowered the strain and porosity. Thus, the membrane thermal pressed at $50^{\circ}C$ showed the best mechanical properties and the second highest porosity. Using the data, $50^{\circ}C$ was judged as the best thermal pressing temperature in terms of performance.

  • This study aims to suggest the partition ratio (Q-factor) of healthy Koreans and the comparison results of breath alcohol concentration (BAC) measurements using two methods (photoacoustic and electrochemical methods) for developing breath alcohol ignition interlock devices (BAIIDs). Given the relationship between BACs and BrACs and the Q-factor, the alcohol metabolism of healthy Koreans (96 males and 91 females) is revealed for understanding the digestion of alcohol and surveying the fundamental data of alcohol-related problems, CO2 concentrations vs. alcohol concentrations, and the performance of alcohol sensors in the marketplace. The average Q-factor of healthy Korean males and females are 1,913 (95% confidence interval from 1,889-1,937) and 1,991 (95% confidence interval from 1,945-2,036). Photoacoustic measurements could be applied to predict the BACs of drinkers, which is confirmed by the Bland-Altman plots presented in this study. The biases based on the partition ratios (Q=1,913 and Q=1,991) in the Bland-Altman plots were -0.0004% (95% CI from -0.0011 to +0.0003% for males) and -0.0017% (95% CI from -0.020 to +0.017% for females).

  • This work investigated the characteristics of a packed-bed plasma reactor system and the performances of the plasma reactors connected in series or in parallel for the decomposition of ethylene. Before the discharge ignition, the effective capacitance of the ${\gamma}$-alumina packed-bed plasma reactor was larger than that of the reactor without any packing, but after the ignition the effective capacitance was similar to each other, regardless of the packing. The energy of electrons created by plasma depends mainly on the electric field intensity, and was not significantly affected by the gas composition in the range of 0~20% (v/v) oxygen (nitrogen : 80~100% (v/v)). Among the various reactive species generated by plasma, ground-state atomic oxygen and ozone are understood to be primarily involved in oxidation reactions, and as the electric field intensity increases, the amount of ground-state atomic oxygen relatively decreases while that of nitrogen atom increases. Even though there are many parameters affecting the performance of the plasma reactor such as a voltage, discharge power, gas flow rate and residence time, all parameters can be integrated into a single parameter, namely, specific input energy (SIE). It was experimentally confirmed that the performances of the plasma reactors connected in series or in parallel could be treated as a function of SIE alone, which simplifies the scale-up design procedure. Besides, the ethylene decomposition results can be predicted by the calculation using the rate constant expressed as a function of SIE.

  • The objective of this work presented here was focused on analysis of in-cylinder combustion characteristic, engine performance, and nitrogen oxides emission characteristic from marine gas oil for propulsion diesel engine of naval vessels and biodiesel with fuel injection timing in a single cylinder diesel engine. In addition, combustion process was analyzed with a high speed camera of marine gas oil and biodiesel fuel. Retarding the fuel injection timing from $BTDC25^{\circ}CA$ to $BTDC5^{\circ}CA$, in cylinder peak combustion pressure was gradually decreased, however, engine torque showed a tendency to increase. The highest nitrogen oxides level was measured at $BTDC15^{\circ}CA$, they were reduced at retarded and advanced condition on the basis of $BTDC15^{\circ}CA$. Comparing with combustion process of marine gas oil and biodiesel fuel at $BTDC5^{\circ}CA$, self-ignition timing of biodiesel fuel included oxygen content was faster than marine gas oil, however, a cautious observation indicates a slightly higher flame intensity for marin gas oil than biodiesel as a diffusion flame is developing.
