Purpose - We investigate whether a potential missing pricing factor plays a significant role in the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle. Design/methodology/approach - We theoretically show how a missing pricing factor can affect the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle, and also show how to get around the problem empirically. We adopt the Fama-French five factor model for the estimation of the idiosyncratic risk and use randomly constructed portfolios as test assets. Findings - We find that a missing factor does not drive the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle. Thus, we conclude that the idiosyncratic volatility does affect the risk premium of its stock. Research implications or Originality - The Fama-French five factor model does a pretty good job in explaining the risk premiums of stocks, and it can be used to reliably estimate idiosyncratic risk of stocks.

This paper examines the relationship between idiosyncratic volatility(IVOL) puzzle and trading volumes by trader types in the Korean stock market. The data set includes all stock in both KRX and KOSDAQ for the period from January 1999 through December 2013. Idiosyncratic volatility is measured by using the Fama-French's three-factor model. Traders are classified into individual, institution, and foreign trader. We construct (5X5) portfolios based on each trader's net buying and idiosyncratic volatility. We find that there are some special portfolios that show the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle. For individual investors, top net buying portfolios show clear the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle. However, for institution and foreign investors, lowest net buying portfolio show the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle. This results imply that the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle in the Korean stock market is mainly caused by individual investors.
In this study, we examined whether common idiosyncratic volatility(CIV), a risk factor for idiosyncratic volatility, can be evaluated as a pricing factor. The sample is listed on the Korea Exchange. The analysis period is 288 months from July 1992 to June 2016. The main results of this study are as follows. First, in the empirical verification of the market excess returns of the testing portfolios, the difference in the return on the CIV factor sensitivity difference was statistically significant. In other words, we confirmed that there is a risk premium for CIV factors. Second, CAPM, FF3 factor model, and FF5 factor model do not explain the risk premium for CIV factors, whereas factor models that add CIV factors explain the risk premium for CIV factors. In other words, the CIV factor can be evaluated in terms of pricing factors.
Purpose - This paper examines whether overnight returns and idiosyncratic volatility (IVOL) jointly affects the cross-section of expected stock returns in the Korean stock market. Design/methodology/approach - Constructing 5×5 bivariate monthly portfolios independently sorted on overnight returns and IVOL, this paper tests whether overpricing of stocks with high overnight returns is more pronounced for the stocks that also have high IVOL. In addition, we also investigate whether time-variation in the degree of overpricing for those stocks can be explained by market volatility. Findings - Our results show that stocks having both high overnight returns and high IVOL exhibit strong negative returns in the future. In contrast, we are unable to observe such negative returns for the stocks that have high overnight returns and low IVOL. This suggests that overpricing of stocks with high overnight returns is concentrated for the stocks having high IVOL. Moreover, we also find that the degree to which such stocks are overpriced is negatively related to market volatility. Research implications or Originality - his paper is the first attempt to explore whether degree of overpricing of stocks having high overnight returns is related to IVOL. We also discover time-varying property of overpricing is jointly driven by overnight returns and IVOL. Our results indicate that IVOL might help explain other previously documented stock return anomalies, suggesting interesting topics for future research.
Purpose - This study examines whether flight-to-liquidity (FTL) explains the dynamic liquidity risk on stock returns, and whether it has a significant influence on determinants the cross-section of stock returns. Design/methodology/approach - This study suggests a new risk factor, dynamic liquidity hedge portfolio (DLP), to reflect the dynamic impact of liquidity risk on stock returns and the Fama-MacBeth 2 stage regression analysis is employed in order to analyze the data. Findings - First, the DLP factor shows more positive and significant beta for the small or illiquidity stocks. Second, the DLP shows a different influence than SMB (size risk factor), HML (value risk factor), NMP (liquidity risk factor), FTVOL (total volatility factor) in determining the cross-section of stock returns. In addition, the DLP has a statistically significant risk premium of around 5%, which is relatively larger than other risk factors. Research implications or Originality - This study has academic value in terms of newly confirming that the DLP factor has a more significant impact on cross-sectional determination of stock returns than other risk factors by proposing a conditional liquidity factor that can explain the FTL phenomenon.

This study examines the effect of block diversity on the risk of firms listed on the Korean Stock Exchange between 2010 and 2017. To examine the effect of block diversity on corporate risk, we measure block diversity in terms of a single component, portfolio size, by referring to prior literature. This diversity component accounts for the differences in portfolio size across corporate blocks. In line with existing research on corporate risk, we consider several variables to measure corporate risk: volatility, beta, and idiosyncratic risk. The results show a negative relationship between the size of a block shareholder's portfolio and corporate risk. We also show no difference in the effect of block diversity on the corporate risk between KOSPI and KOSDAQ. This implies that the difference in portfolio size among corporate blocks reduces corporate risk. This may be due to the effect of inter-block monitoring activities in the Korean securities market, which benefits from block diversity. This empirical result supports previous studies that predicted that block diversity would have beneficial influences on firm monitoring in general. This study is significant in that it analyzes the relationship between block diversity and firm risk and provides relevant information to business practitioners and investors.

This paper investigates the relationship between the ownership of the largest family blockholders and corporate risk. We also examine whether firms that belong to 30 main Chaebol groups lower corporate risk. We use panel analysis for companies listed on the Korea Exchange from 2005 to 2017. We use beta, volatility, and idiosyncratic risk as a proxy for corporate risk. We employ both the ownership of the largest family blockholders and firms that belong to 30 main Chaebol groups as a major independent variable. The results show that the ownership of the largest family blockholders is associated with low beta. In terms of the effects of the ownership of the largest family blockholders on beta, we find that a firm that belongs to the 30 main Chaebol group reinforces the lower beta. These results suggest that the ownership of the largest family blockholders and firms that belongs to 30 main Chaebol groups may be associated with low systematic risk in the Korean stock market. Our findings can provide meaningful information to investors and field officers who are interested in the relationship between firm risk and both the largest family blockholders' ownership and firms that belong to 30 main Chaebol groups.
This paper explores the relationship between firm-specific volatility and some firm characteristics such as size, the market-to-book ratio of equity, PER, PBR, PCR, PSR and turnover in KOSDAQ market. In addition, I investigate whether portfolios with difference to realized range-based volatility and firm-specific volatility have different investment performance using CAPM and FF-3 factor model. The main findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, firm-specific volatility have mostly positive relationship between firm-specific volatility and some firm characteristics. Second, this study found that realized range-based volatility and firm-specific volatility are positively related to expected return. It means that portfolios with high idiosyncratic volatility have significantly higher expected return than portfolios with low firm-specific volatility.
This paper investigates the influence of stock-level left-tail risk, which is defined using Value-at-Risk(VaR) estimates of past one-year daily stock returns, in the expected stock returns in the Korean stock market. Our results are summarized as follows: First, monthly-constructed zero-cost portfolios that buy (shortsell) the highest (lowest) left-tail risk decile in the previous month exhibit an average monthly return (called left-tail risk premium) of -2.29%. Second, Fama-MacBeth cross-sectional regressions suggest that left-tail risk in the previous month shows significant and negative explanatory power over return in this month, after controlling for various firm characteristics such as firm size, B/M, market beta, liquidity, maximum daily return, idiosyncratic volatility, and skewness. Third, the stocks with larger recent month loss have lower returns in the next month. Fourth, the magnitude of left-tail risk premium is negatively related with lagged market-level volatility. These results support the hypothesis from a perspective of behavioral finance that the overpricing of stocks with left-tail risk is attributed to the investors' underreaction to it.
This study provides empirical evidence that the stochastic beta model based on Bayesian analysis outperforms the existing conditional beta model and GARCH model in terms of the estimation accuracy and the explanatory power in the cross-section of stock returns in Korea. Betas estimated by the stochastic beta model explain $30{\sim}50%$ of the cross-sectional variation in stock-returns, whereas other time-varying beta models account for less than 3%. Such a difference in explanatory power across models turns out to come from the fact that the stochastic beta model absorbs the variation due to the market anomalies such as size, BE/ME, and idiosyncratic volatility. These results support the rational asset pricing model in that market anomalies are closely related to the variation of expected returns generated by time-varying betas.
