This paper presents the virtual mass method to implement the prediction of total resistance for ice-going ship in floe ice region based on the combined method of CFD and DEM. Two ways of floe ice distribution are adopted for the analysis and comparison. The synthetic ice model test has been conducted to determine the optimal virtual mass coefficients for the two different floe ice distributions. Moreover, the further verification and prediction are developed in different ice conditions. The results show that, the fixed and random distributions in numerical method can simulate the interaction of ship and ice vividly, the trend of total resistance varying with the speed and ice concentration obtained by the numerical simulation is consistent with the model test. The random distribution of floe ice has higher similarity and better accuracy than fixed distribution.

Knowledge about ice load distribution along the ship hull due to ship-ice interaction can provide important background information for the development of design codes for ice-going vessels. The objective of this study is to understand ship and ice interaction phenomena and determine the magnitude of ice load acting along a ship hull. The model tests were performed in the ice model basin in Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (KRISO) with the model of icebreaking ship Araon. Self-propulsion tests in level ice were performed with three difference model ship speeds. In the model tests, three tactile sensors were installed to measure the spatial distribution of ice load acting at different locations on a model ship, such as the bow and shoulder areas. Variation in the distribution of ice load acting on a model hull with ship speed is discussed.

Experiments were carried out to evaluate performance of the cold air distribution systems with an ice storage tank in test room. Cold air distribution systems provide primary air for comfort conditioning or process cooling at coil discharge temperatures$4^{\circ}C$ to$11^{\circ}C$. The application of a cold air distribution system allows for the downsizing of air distribution equipment and central plant equipment when ice storage tank is used. The benefit of a cold air distribution system include a decrease in the floor-to-floor height, increase floor space, reduced building capital costs, reduced energy use and demand. The use of cold air distribution can result in the most cost effective system and is currently being implemented world wise as the new standard in air conditioning systems. In this study, the cold air distribution system is compared with the general ice storage system. Under the same cooling load conditions, experimental results show that the supply air volume of cold air distribution system decrease 38%, and decrease 45% flow rate of brine for the general ice storage system.

This paper presents 2D numerical modeling to calculate ship-ice interactions that occur when an icebreaker advances into ice-covered water. The numerical model calculates repeated icebreaking of an ice plate and removal of small ice floes. The icebreaking of the ice plate is calculated using a ship-ice contact detection technique and fluid-structural interaction of ice plate bending behavior. The ship-ice interactions in small ice floes are calculated using a physically based modeling with 3DOF rigid body equations. The ice plate is broken in crushing, bending, and splitting mode. The ice floes drift by wind or current and by the force induced by the ship-ice interaction. The time history of ice force and ice floe distribution when an icebreaker advances into the ice-covered water are obtained numerically. Numerical results demonstrate that the time history of ice force and distribution of ice floes (ice channel width) depend on the ice floe size, ship motion and ice drifting by wind or current. It is shown that the numerical model of ship maneuvering in realistic ice conditions is necessary to obtain precise information about the ship in ice-covered water. The proposed numerical model can be useful to provide data of a ship operating in ice-covered water.
This paper reviews various bulk-type cloud microphysics parameterizations (BCMPs). BCMP, predicting the moments of size distribution of hydrometeors, parameterizes the grid-resolved cloud and precipitation processes in atmospheric models. The generalized gamma distribution is mainly applied to represent the hydrometeors size distribution in BCMPs. BCMP can be divided in three different methods such as single-moment, double-moment, and triple-moment approaches depending on the number of prognostic variables. Single-moment approach only predicts the hydrometeors mixing ratio. Double-moment approach predicts not only the hydrometeors mixing ratio but also the hydrometeors number concentration. Triple-moment approach predicts the dispersion parameter of hydrometeors size distribution through the prognostic reflectivity, together with the number concentrations and mixing ratios of hydrometeors. Triple-moment approach is the most time expensive method because it has the most number of prognostic variables. However, this approach can allow more flexibility in representing hydrometeors size distribution relative to single-moment and double-moment approaches. At the early stage of the development of BMCPs, warm rain processes were only included. Ice-phase categories such as cloud ice, snow, graupel, and hail were included in BCMPs with prescribed properties for densities and sedimentation velocities of ice-phase hydrometeors since 1980s. Recently, to avoid fixed properties for ice-phase hydrometeors and ad-hoc category conversion, the new approach was proposed in which rimed ice and deposition ice mixing ratios are predicted with total ice number concentration and volume.

The finite element method is used to simulate the navigation of an ice-area bulk carrier in broken ice fields. The ice material is defined as elastic, and the simulations are accomplished at four model speeds and three ice concentrations. The movements of ice floes in the simulation are consistent with those in the model test, and the percentage deviation of the numerical ice resistance from the ice resistance in the model test can be controlled to be less than 15 %. The key characteristics of ice loads, including the average ice loads, extreme ice loads, and characteristic frequency, are analyzed thoroughly in a comprehensive manner. Moreover, the effects of sailing speed and ice concentration on the ice loads are analyzed. In particular, the stress distribution of ice floes is presented to help understand how model speed and concentration affect the ice loads. The "ice pressure" phenomenon is observed at 90 % ice concentration, and it is realistically reflected both in the time―and frequency―domain ice force curves.

We investigated the distribution of sea ice using Topex/Poseidon (T/P) and ERS-1 .ada. altimeter data in the northwest Weddell Sea, Antarctica, between the area $45-75^{\circ}W\;and\;55-66^{\circ}S$. Using the Geo_Bad_1 flag of the Merged GDR of the T/P, we classified the surface into ocean, land, and sea. Total 257 cycles of altimeter measurements between Oct. 1992 and Sep. 1999 (for nearly 2570 days) were used to analyze the distribution of the Antarctic sea ice. We then calculated the surface area of ice coverage using SUTM20 map projection to monitor the periodic variations. Each year, the maximum and minimum coverage of the sea ice were found in late August and February in the study area, respectively. We also studied the sea ice distribution using ERS-1 altimeter data between $45-75^{\circ}W\;and\;55-81.5^{\circ}S$ to compare with the T/P Using the Valid/Invalid flag of the Ocean Product, we analyzed the sea ice distribution between March and August of 1995, which showed very good coherence with the T/P measurements. Our preliminary results showed that the altimeter measurements can be effectively used to monitor the distribution of the sea ice in the polar region. However, the size of radar footprint, typically 2-6km depending on the roughness of the sea surface, may be too big to monitor the sharp boundary between ice and water/land. If more other altimeter mission data with dense coverage such as Geosat GM are analyzed together, this limitation can be significantly improved. If we also combine other microwave remote sensing data such as radiometer, and SSM/I, the result will be significantly enhanced.
A parameterization for the scattering of longwave radiation by ice clouds has been developed based on spectral scattering property calculations with shapes and sizes of ice crystals. For this parameterization, the size distribution data by Fu (1996) and by Michell and Arnott (1994) are used. The shapes of ice crystal considered in this study are plate, solid column, hollow column, bullet-rosette, droxtal, aggregate, and spheroid. The properties of longwave scattering by ice crystals are presented as a function of the extinction coefficient, single-scattering albedo, and asymmetry factor. The heating rate and flux by the radiative parameterization model are calculated for wide range of ice crystal sizes, shapes, and optical thickness. The results are compared with the calculated results using a six-stream discrete ordinate scattering algorithm and Chou's method. The new method (with various habits and size distributions) provides a good simulation of the scattering properties and cooling rate in optically thin clouds (optical thickness < 5). Depending on the inclusion of scattering by ice clouds, the errors in the calculation of the cooling rates are significantly different.
We investigated the distribution of sea ice using various microwave remote sensing techniques including radar altimeter, radiometer, and scatterometer data in the part of Drake passage, Antarctica, between the area 45$^{\circ}$-75$^{\circ}$W and 55$^{\circ}$-66$^{\circ}$S. Topex/poseidon radar altimeter data were used to analyze the monthly distribution of sea ice surface area between 1992 and 1999 by using Geo_bad_1 flag or MGDR. From satellite radiometer measurements of DMSP's SSM/I, sea ice concentration was extracted during the period from 1993 to 1996. To select a value of ice concentration, normally ranging from 0 to 100%, that can be used as a critical value of judging the existence for ice, sea ice areas estimated from various ice concentrations of radiometer measurements were correlated with the area estimated from the radar altimeter measurements. As a result, 20% of ice concentration was selected, and, then this value was used to integrate radiometer data with radar altimeter and ERS-1/2 scatterometer data. To indirectly verify the result, the last 20 year's sea ice concentration was correlated with surface temperature data near Esper-anza Observation Station. The two data showed a high correlation coefficient of 0.86. The amount of sea ice and temperature variation were found to be closely related in the study area, and this indirectly verifies the result of this study. We provided a method to judge the existence of sea ice from ice concentration of satellite radiometer data and suggested a method to monitor more detailed temporal and spatial variation of sea ice distribution by integra-tion of various microwave remote sensing techniques.

Interstellar ices (e.g., $H_2O$, $CO_2$, and CO ices) are formed on the surface of dust grains in dense molecular clouds. In a near-infrared spectrum, we can observe deep absorption features particularly due to $H_2O$ ice at $3.05{\mu}m$ and $CO_2$ ice at $4.27{\mu}m$. These interstellar ices have many pieces of information on the interstellar environment. Among various ices, $CO_2$ ice is one of the most important ones as a probe of the interstellar environment. That is because $CO_2$ ice is a secondary product unlike $H_2O$ and CO ices which are primarily formed on dust grains. Past studies for $CO_2$ ice in nearby galaxies were performed only for the galactic center in a few galaxies. In order to utilize the information from $CO_2$ ice effectively, it is valuable to perform mapping observations of ices on a galactic scale. With AKARI, we obtain the spatially-resolved near-infrared ($2.5-5.0{\mu}m$) spectra for the central ~1 kpc region of the nearby starburst galaxy M 82. These spectra clearly show the absorption features due to interstellar $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ ices, and we created their column density maps. As a result, we find that the spatial distribution of $H_2O$ ice is significantly different from that of $CO_2$ ice; $H_2O$ ice is widely distributed, while $CO_2$ ice is concentrated near the galactic center. Our result for the first time reveals spatial variations in $CO_2/H_2O$ ice abundance ratio on a galactic scale, suggesting that the ice-forming interstellar environment changes within a galaxy. In this presentation, we discuss the cause of the variations in the ice abundance ratio.
