Estimation of Ice Load on Bow of a Icebreaking Research Vessel (쇄빙 과학조사선 선수부에 작용하는 빙하중 추정)

  • Ice load acting on a icebreaking research vessel is estimated. Existing measured ice loads are used to get the global load and the local load. The global load is for analyzing the bending behavior of the vessel during ice breaking operation mode and the local load for estimating the bow structural behavior. In the paper, the global load is predicted using the data from analysis of ship motion during ice breaking. And the local load is predicted using the data from strain gage attached to bow frames.

  • Recently, various efforts have been made to develop oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean. It is very important to consider the load caused by ice in designing floating structures in the area. The magnitude of the ice load and its impact on a structure should be considered. In this paper, we analyze ice parameters affecting the DP performance of FPSO with a DP-assisted mooring system. Several ice characteristics are selected, and the resulting ice load is calculated using GEM software. Numerous simulations are conducted while changing the values of the parameters, and DP capability plots are generated to visualize the effects of changing these parameters. It is shown that the ice drift speed and thickness are the major properties to be considered in DP system design. The limitations of the analysis and future work are discussed in the conclusion.

Physical and Sensory Properties of Ice Cream Containing Fermented Pepper Powder

  • This study was conducted to investigate the physical and sensory properties of ice cream containing fermented pepper powder. Three ice cream formulas were manufactured: 1, control; 2, supplemented with 0.1% fermented pepper powder; and 3, supplemented with 0.2% fermented pepper powder. Formulas 2 and 3 had significantly higher viscosity and lower overrun than formula 1 (p<0.05). Additionally, ice creams supplemented with fermented pepper powder were harder and maintained their forms longer than the controls. 0.2% fermented pepper powder added ice cream had no pungency as much as that of control and overall sensory attribute was not significantly different from control. Therefore, ice cream containing fermented pepper powder maintained physical and sensory properties similar to the controls, and maintenance was better. It means fermented pepper powder ice cream can be utilized as the material of functional food (dessert).

Comparative study on the resistance performance of an icebreaking cargo vessel according to the variation of waterline angles in pack ice conditions

  • The resistance performance of an icebreaking cargo vessel according to the variation of waterline angles is investigated numerically and experimentally. A recently developed Finite Element (FE) model is used in our analysis. A resistance test with synthetic ice is performed in the towing tank at Pusan National University (PNU) to compare and validate the computed results. We demonstrate good agreement between the experimental and numerical results. Shipice interaction loads are numerically calculated based on the Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) method in the commercial FE package LS-DYNA. Test results from model testing with synthetic ice at the PNU towing tank are used to compare and validate the numerical simulations. For each waterline angle, numerical and experimental comparisons were made for three concentrations (90%, 80%, and 60%) of pack ice. Ice was modeled as a rigid body, but the ice density was the same as that used in the experiments. A comparative study according to the variation of stem angles is expected to be conducted in the near future.

Ice Load Estimation Procedures for IBRV ARAON by Analyzing Shear Strain Data Measured in Arctic Sea (쇄빙연구선 아라온호의 북극해 실선 계측 전단변형 데이터 분석을 통한 빙하중 산정 기법 고찰)

  • This paper focuses on the estimation of local ice loads exerted from ship-ice interaction processes. The Korean IBRV ARAON was used to perform field ice trials during her 2015 Arctic voyage. During ARAON's general ice transit, a total of 72 channels of data from both strain gauges on the inner hull plates and those installed on the transverse frames of the ARAON's bow section structures were analyzed to calculate the local ice loads. The local ice loads estimated from the analysis of the shear strain data measured on the side frames were compared to those from the hull plate pressures.

A Study on Determinant Factors and Choice Intentions Ice Cream Stores (아이스크림 전문점의 고객 선택 요인과 만족에 관한 연구)

  • This study focused on the attribution factors affecting customers' satisfaction and revisit behaviors related to ice cream stores. For this study, 180 ice cream consumers who were patrons of ice cream franchise stores were randomly selected. Among them, 31 did not completed the survey. Therefore, a total of 149 survey questionnaires were analyzed for the results. All results were carried out using the frequency, factor analysis, cross tabs, and regression procedure of the SPSS 10.0 package. The results indicated that customers who visit ice cream stores $2{\sim}3$ times per month have a preference for a particular ice cream store. Determinant factors for ice cream specialty stores were summarized as the extensiveness of the menu, advertisements and familiarity, economical benefits, convenience inside the store, location and accessibility, and kindness. Among these, four factors (extensiveness of menu, advertisement and reputation, economical benefits, location and accessibility) significantly affected the level of customer satisfaction.

Downscaling of AMSR2 Sea Ice Concentration Using a Weighting Scheme Derived from MODIS Sea Ice Cover Product (MODIS 해빙피복 기반의 가중치체계를 이용한 AMSR2 해빙면적비의 다운스케일링)

  • Sea ice is generally accepted as an important factor to understand the process of earth climate changes and is the basis of earth system models for analysis and prediction of the climate changes. To continuously monitor sea ice changes at kilometer scale, it is demanded to create more accurate grid data from the current, limited sea ice data. In this paper we described a downscaling method for Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) from 10 km to 1 km resolution using a weighting scheme of sea ice days ratio derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sea ice cover product that has a high correlation with the SIC. In a case study for Okhotsk Sea, the sea ice areas of both data (before and after downscaling) were identical, and the monthly means and standard deviations of SIC exhibited almost the same values. Also, Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analyses showed that three kinds of SIC data (ERA-Interim, original AMSR2, and downscaled AMSR2) had very similar principal components for spatial and temporal variations. Our method can apply to downscaling of other continuous variables in the form of ratio such as percentage and can contribute to monitoring small-scale changes of sea ice by providing finer SIC data.

  • KOPRI(Korea Polar Research Institute) have researhed Arctic sea ice by using satellite remote sensing data since 2017 as a mission of KOPRI. The title of the reseach is "Development of Satellite Observation and Analysis for Arctc sea-ice". This project has three major aims; 1) development of prototype satellite data archive/manage system for Arctic sea ice monitoring, 2) development of sea ice remote sensing data processing and analysis technique, and 3) development of international satellite observing network for Arcitc. This reseach will give us that 1) deveolpment of sea ice observing system for northern sea route, 2) development of optimal remote sensing data processing technique for sea ice and selected satelite sensors, 3) development of international satellite onbservation network. I hope that this letter of introducton KOPRI satellite program for Arctic will help to understand Arctic remote sensing and will introduce you to step into the Arctic remote sensing, which Iis like a blue ocean of remote sensing.

  • The accumulated ice and snow during the operation of aircraft and railway vehicles can degrade aerodynamic performance or damage the major components of vehicles. Therefore, it is crucial to predict the temporal growth of ice for operational safety. Numerical simulation of ice is widely used owing to the fact that it is economically cheaper and free from similarity problems compared to experimental methods. However, numerical simulation of ice generally divides the analysis into multi-step and assumes the quasi-steady assumption that considers every time step as steady state. Although this method enables efficient analysis, it has a disadvantage in that it cannot track continuous ice evolution. The purpose of this study is to construct a surrogate model that can predict the temporal evolution of ice shape using reduced-order modeling. Reduced-order modeling technique was validated for various ice shape generated under 100 different icing conditions, and the effect of the number of training data and the icing conditions on the prediction error of model was analyzed.

Storage Effects of Seawater and Tapwater Ice For Freshness of Mackerel(Scomber japonicus) (고등어 신선도 유지를 위한 해수와 담수 얼음의 저장효과)

  • This study was conducted to see the effect of maintaining the freshness of mackerel caught offshore, through the chemical analysis method in seawater slurry ice(SS), sea water cube ice(SC), tap water slurry ice(TS) and tap water cube ice(TC). Among each ice mass, bacteria were below the drinking water standard and ammonia nitrogen was over the threshold of 11 mg/l in sea water. The turbidity of the seawater was severe compared to that of fresh water. Proximate compositions showed 72.7% moisture content, 20.5% protein, 5.25% lipid, and 1.3% ash content. Sea slurry ice was kept low in pH compared with fresh water ice. VBN increases were inhibited in all reservoirs at the beginning of the storage. Generally Sea ice was kept lower VBN value than the fresh water ice.
