Human insulin gene is consisted of the polymorphic region with the repeating units, the regulatory sequence, the structural gene including the intervening sequence, and 3'-flanking region. The polymerase chain reaction, which amplifies the target DNA between two specific primers, has been performed for the amplification of human insulin gene and simple one-step cloning of it into Escherichia coli. Out of 1727 nuceotides compared, only 4 sites were variable: 5'-regulatory region(G2101$\rightarrow$AGG); IVS I(T2401$\rightarrow$A); Exon II(C2411 deletion); IVS II(A2740 dejection). The variations at the G2101 and T2401 were the same as those found in one American allele. The other two variations were observed only in the specific Korean allele. And, the enzyme digestion patterns among normal, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus were the same. On the other hand, PCR method showed the possibility of the quickaccess for the polymorphic region in terms of the restriction fragment length of polymorphism.

The susceptibility of five different marine fish to iridovirus IVS-1 infection was analyzed and found a higher the cumulative mortality in the order of rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus), red sea bream (Pagrus major), sea perch (Lateolabrax sp.), rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) and black porgy (Acanthopagrus schlegeli). However, the concentrations of virus in the infected spleens of these species did not differ significantly. To determine the release of iridovirus from infected fish into culturing seawater, rock bream were challenged with iridovirus IVS-1 and the concentration of virus in the water was analyzed using PCR. Over the 10 days of the analysis, the linear relationship between the number of dead fish and viral DNA concentration found in culturing seawater should be considered direct evidence of horizontal iridovirus transmission.

Alkaptonuria (AKU, OMIM: 203500) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of tyrosine metabolism due to a defect of enzyme activity, homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase (HGD). The patients with AKU initially presented with dark urine discoloration, and ochronosis and arthritis develop after third decades of life. With advances of Internet resources, web-based health seekers for rare disease are increasing. Here, we report the case of an 18-year-old boy with AKU who visited our center due to dark black urine based on self-diagnosis via web searching of this rare condition. Compound heterozygous mutations in HGD gene, IVS5+3A>C and IVS12+6T>C were identified and both of mutations were detected in his parents. Our case illustrates the utility of publicly available Internet resources for diagnosis of rare disease.

To analyze longitudinal count data, Poisson linear mixed models are commonly used. In the models the random effects covariance matrix explains both within-subject variation and serial correlation of repeated count outcomes. When the random effects covariance matrix is assumed to be misspecified, the estimates of covariates effects can be biased. Therefore, we propose reasonable and flexible structures of the covariance matrix using autoregressive and moving average Cholesky decomposition (ARMACD). The ARMACD factors the covariance matrix into generalized autoregressive parameters (GARPs), generalized moving average parameters (GMAPs) and innovation variances (IVs). Positive IVs guarantee the positive-definiteness of the covariance matrix. In this paper, we use the ARMACD to model the random effects covariance matrix in Poisson loglinear mixed models. We analyze epileptic seizure data using our proposed model.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the internal fitness of prostheses fabricated with non-contact extra-oral scanner and those fabricated with intra-oral video scanner, with a comparative accuracy analyses of their precision and trueness. Methods: A polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) model was fabricated by replicating a master model. The prostheses in the first group were fabricated based on the PMMA model with an intra-oral video scanner (IVS group). Following the fabrication of work models with Type IV Stone that were based on the PMMA model, the prostheses in the second group were fabricated with a non-contact extra-oral scanner (ENB group). The precision and trueness of the prostheses were calculated from comparisons of the three-dimensional images of the internal surfaces of the prostheses and those of the master model. Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to determine the statistical significance, with the level of type 1 error set at 0.05. Results: Trueness (P < 0.009) and precision (P < 0.001) did not differ significantly between the ENB and IVS groups. The IVS group exhibited lower trueness values and larger precision values than the ENB group. Conclusion: Although no significant differences were found in the internal fitness of the prostheses that were fabricated by the two different scanners, the intraoral video scanner-fabricated prostheses had better trueness, whereas the non-contact extra-oral scanner-fabricated prostheses had better precision.

A stationary Type IV (IVs) radio burst was observed on September 24, 2011. Observations from the Nançay RadioHeliograph (NRH) show that the brightness temperature (TB ) of this burst is extremely high, over 10^11K at 150 MHz and over 10^8K in general. The degree of circular polarization (q ) is between -60%~-100%, which means that it is highly left-handed circularly polarized. The flux-frequency spectrum follows a power-law distribution, and the spectral index is considered to be roughly -3~-4 throughout the IVs. Radio sources of this event are located in the wake of the coronal mass ejection and are spatially dispersed. They line up to present a formation in which lower-frequency sources are higher. Based on these observations, it is suggested that the IVs was generated through electron cyclotron maser emission.

1995년 한국 최초로 VLBI관측이 이루어졌다. 일본 측의 26m 안테나(일본 국토연구원 소재)와 한국 측의 3.6m 안테나(국토지리정보원 소재)로 수행되었으며, 이 때 결정된 관측점의 좌표가 세계 공통으로 사용되는 "세계측지계(ITRF)"에 의거한 새로운 국가기준좌표계의 경위도 원점이다. 그 후 측지VLBI관측국의 설치를 위해, "측지VLBI구축 타당성조사 및 기본계획 수립을 위한 연구(2003년)"와 "측지VLBI구축 실시설계(2006년)"를 수행하였다. 그 결과 국가 차원에서 측지VLBI관측소(22m 안테나)를 건설하기 위해 2008년에 관측소 후보지를 세종시로 확정해서 공사에 들어갔다. 2012년에 준공되었으며, 명칭을 "우주측지관측센터"로 하였다. 그 후 1년 동안의 시험관측의 성공으로 아시아에서 3번째로 정식으로 IVS(International VLBI Service)에 가입하였다. 현재 독일, 일본, 미국 등의 측지VLBI관측국들과 정기적으로 관측을 수행하게 되었으며, 실적을 올리고 있다. IVS사업 뿐 만 아니라, 한국천문연구원의 KVN(천문 VLBI)연구팀과도 공동연구를 수행해서 우리나라의 천문 VLBI 및 측지VLBI관측사업의 활성화에 기여하고 있다. 장차 동남아 각국에 마이크로SAR위성의 관측데이터를 수신하기 위한 지상국(3m급 소형안테나)이 설치되면, 이를 활용해서 측지VLBI관측을 수행할 계획을 수립하고 있다. 이것은 위성용 수신기를 VLBI용 수신기로 교체하면 된다. 한국과 일본이 VLBI관측을 수행했던 것처럼 세종시에 설치된 우주측지관측소가 허브역할을 하면 된다. 즉 동남아 지역에 우주 VLBI관측망을 구축하게 된다.

We have identified an iridovirus CH-1 from sea perch Lateolabrax sp. healthy externally and imported from China to Korea. In a comparison of the nucleotide sequences of the five different genomic regions, the CH-1 appears to be closely related to the ISKNV, IVS-1 and Ehime-1 strains detected in China, Korea and Japan respectively. In quantitative comparison of the viral DNA, level of CH-1 in tissue of imported fish was 10,000 times lower than that of IVS-1 strain presented in the infected rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus of moribund stage. It allowed us to speculate the possibility of the asymtomatic iridovirus infection in the culturing sea perch. Such possibility of asymptomatic infection was supported by result of no appearance of dead fish with typical symptoms of iridoviral disease in keeping experiment of the imported sea pearch in laboratory for more than three weeks. Such asymptomatic infections with iridovirus were also found in spleen of the culturing and externally healthy sea perch of Korea by the presence of the iridoviral DNA in nested PCR.

Absent pulmonary valve syndrome with intact ventricular septum(APVS with IVS) is a rare congenital anomaly. The severe form of this syndrome, characterized by severe respiratory distress presented soon after birth, has been attributed to the compression of the airways caused by aneurysmal dilatation of pulmonary artery. Several operative treatments such as pulmonary valve insertion, or reductive angioplasty of pulmonary artery have been applied. We present a 3-day-old male who showed improvement after PDA ligation, reductive angioplasty of pulmonary artery, pulmonary valve reconstruction, and ASD closure.

Background: Ovarian cancer is the number one killer among all the gynecological cancers. We undertook association study to identify potential alterations in the genomic DNA of a DNA repair gene, DNA polymerase beta ($pol{\beta}$), involved in base excision repair (BER), in ovarian carcinomas of patients from Haldia, India. Mutations, splice variants have been reported earlier in different tumors other than ovarian tumors. Aim: In this study we explored the possibility of association of any mutation of $pol{\beta}$ (Exon 8) with prognosis in 152 ovarian cancer samples. Results: Alteration in the exon 8 region (Exon 8:468, $A{\rightarrow}C$; 15.1%) was noted among fifty seven polymorphism positive samples. Alteration in the intervening sequence 8 (IVS8, -25, $A{\rightarrow}C$; 3.9%) was also noted. All alterations are heterozygous in nature. Conclusions: We found no significant association among the samples from serous type, stage IV, and the $pol{\beta}$ mutations ($P{\leq}0.01$). Only a slight tendency of association was evident between IVS8, -25, A to C; and stage III. Further analysis with a larger number of samples is needed.
