Alyssin and Iberin in Cruciferous Vegetables Exert Anticancer Activity in HepG2 by Increasing Intracellular Reactive Oxygen Species and Tubulin Depolymerization

  • To determine the chemopreventive potential of alyssin and iberin, the in vitro anticancer activities and molecular targets of isothiocyanates (ITCs) were measured and compared to sulforaphane in hepatocellular carcinoma cell HepG2. The SR-FTIR spectra observed a similar pattern vis-a-vis the biomolecular alteration amongst the ITCs-treated cells suggesting a similar mode of action. All of the ITCs in this study cause cancer cell death through both apoptosis and necrosis in concentration dependent manner ($20-80{\mu}M$). We found no interactions of any of the ITCs studied with DNA. Notwithstanding, all of the ITCs studied increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and suppressed tubulin polymerization, which led to cell-cycle arrest in the S and $G_2/M$ phase. Alyssin possessed the most potent anticancer ability; possibly due to its ability to increase intracellular ROS rather than tubulin depolymerization. Nevertheless, the structural influence of alkyl chain length on anticancer capabilities of ITCs remains inconclusive. The results of this study indicate an optional, potent ITC (viz., alyssin) because of its underlying mechanisms against hepatic cancer. As a consequence, further selection and development of effective chemotherapeutic ITCs is recommended.

Antibacterial activity of isothiocyanates from cruciferous vegetables against pathogenic bacteria in olive flounder (십자화과 채소 유래 isothiocyanates의 넙치 어병세균에 대한 항균활성)

  • The antimicrobial effects of ten isothiocyanates (ITCs) present in cruciferous vegetables and radish root hydrolysate were investigated against pathogenic bacteria from olive flounder. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were measured against two gram-positive bacterial strains (Streptococcus parauberis, S. iniae) and four gram-negative bacterial strains (Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio ichthyoenteri, V. harveyi, Photobacterium damselae) by using a broth microdilution technique. The antibacterial activity of ITCs was in the order sulforaphane > sulforaphene > phenylethyl ITC > erucin > benzyl ITC > iberin > I3C > allyl ITC > phenyl ITC > hexyl ITC. The susceptibility of fish pathogens to ITCs was in the order of V. harveyi > E. tarda > P. damselae > S. parauberis > S. iniae > V. ichthyoenteri. Antimicrobial activity (MIC) of radish root hydrolysate was 0.250 mg/mL against S. iniae, 0.438 mg/mL against S. parauberis, and 0.500 mg/mL against both E. tarda and V. harveyi. The aliphatic ITCs were potent inhibitors of the growth of fish pathogens, followed by aromatic ITCs and indolyl ITC. The presence of a double bond in the chemical structure of ITCs decreased antibacterial activity, while ITCs with a thiol (-S-) group and a longer carbon chain increased antibacterial activity. These results suggest that ITCs have strong antibacterial activities and may be useful in the prevention of fish pathogens.

Antimicrobial Effects of Allyl Isothiocyanates on Several Microorganisms (휘발성 Allyl Isothiocyanate계 화합물의 항균 활성에 관한 연구)

  • Volatile antimicrobial compounds, isothiocyanates (ITCs), were compared their antimicrobial activity against 9 strains, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Escherichia coli, Erwinia carotovora, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans, Aspergillus oryzae and Penicillium roqueforti. And synergistic antimicrobial effect of ITCs was examined with acetic acid. Allyl isothiocyanate (AIT), benzyl isothiocyanate (BIT), and ethyl isothiocyanate (EIT) were more effective than other ITCs. MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) of these compounds was $100{\sim}200\;{\mu}g/dish$ against microorganisms tested and their inhibitory actions were more effective in order of fungi>yeast>Gram-negative bacteria>Gram-positive bacteria. MIC of acetic acid was $50{\sim}500\;{\mu}g/dish$ as lower concentration than ITCs. Using a mixture of volatile antimicrobial compounds and acetic acid, the synergistic effect was increased in $2{\sim}10$ times than ITCs used solely.

Relationship between Chemical Structure and Antimicrobial Activities of Isothiocyanates from Cruciferous Vegetables against Oral Pathogens

  • We evaluated the potentials of 10 isothiocyanates (ITCs) from cruciferous vegetables and radish root hydrolysate for inhibiting the growth of oral pathogens, with an emphasis on assessing any structure-function relationship. Structural differences in ITCs impacted their antimicrobial activities against oral pathogens differently. The indolyl ITC (indol-3-carbinol) was the most potent inhibitor of the growth of oral pathogens, followed by aromatic ITCs (benzyl ITC (BITC) and phenylethyl ITC (PEITC)) and aliphatic ITCs (erucin, iberin, and sulforaphene). Sulforaphene, which is similar in structure, but has one double bond, showed higher antimicrobial activity than sulforaphane. Erucin, which has a thiol group, showed higher antimicrobial activity than sulforaphane, which has a sulfinyl group. BITC and iberin with a short chain exhibited higher antimicrobial potential than PEITC and sulforaphane with a longer chain, respectively. ITCs have strong antimicrobial activities and may be useful in the prevention and management of dental caries.

  • In this parer, face recognition method which can be applied to ITCS (interactive TV control system) is proposed. We extracted ULBP(uniform local binary pattern) histogram feature from infra-red images, and we detected left-right eyes and face region by using SVM classifier. Then, We implemented face recognition system which is using Gabor transform and ULBP histogram feature and applied to personal verification for ITCS.

  • There has been a growing need for interaction between human operator and a remote system to perform a complex task in an unpredictable environment and to operate an important work at a remote distance. The interaction becomes an important parameter in the teleautonomous operation because it permits the operator to control the system at remote distance. As the environmental uncertainties to be applied are getting increased, so is the difference between the plan of the operator and the execution of the system increased. Since the operator may be difficult to know the latest information from frequently changing environment due to time-varying delays, remote system may be hard to control in accordance with the operators command. Interactive Teleautonomous Control System (ITCS) is an approach based on interactions at these environments. The ITCS can be regarded as a control system using the transmitted a system's intnetion. The interactive teleautonomous control does not mean the interaction from operators point of view only considering feedback environmental information and forward simulation but an interaction between the operator and the system that transmits or receives intentions. The proposed ITCS is based on the intention communication that transmits their intentions to each other. The ITCS can correctly control the system in accordance with the operator's intention. Using the intention communication, a system intention is helpful to the operator. In the interactive teleautonomous control, the intention communication has to be provided by the interaction between the operator and the system.

Extraction and Identification of Volatile Isothiocyanates from Wasabi using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (초임계 이산화탄소를 이용한 고추냉이로부터 휘발성 Isothiocyanates류 추출 및 동정)

  • The aim of this study was to identifyisothiocyanates (ITCs) from wasabi (Wasabi japonica Matsum) using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCO_2$) and to compare the composition in the extracts between $SCO_2$ and organic solvents extraction. A semi-continuous high pressure apparatus was used to extract wasabi (roots, stems and leaves) at following conditions pressure 80$\sim$120 bar, temperature $40\sim50^{\circ}C$. Ether, ethanol, chloroform and dichloromethane were used as organic solvents. The ITCs extracted by means of both separation technologies were analyzed by a gas chromatography system. As the results of study, AITC and ITCs were highly extracted at 40$^{\circ}C$ and 80 bar. To extract AITC from wasabi, $SCO_2$ extraction is more effective than organic solvents extraction, resulted in thermal degeneration and remaining of organic solvents.

Wind turbulence characteristics over an industrial landscape in neutral atmospheric conditions

  • The atmospheric turbulence characteristics measured at a meteorological station in northwest part of the Czech Republic are presented for selected time periods in the year 2017. The terrain of this region is influenced by surface coal mining and the related industry. The datasets used in this study were measured using four ultrasonic anemometers installed on an 80 m high meteorological mast at heights of 20, 40, 60 and 80 m, respective. From the primary high-frequency datasets, time intervals in order of hours were selected and integral turbulence characteristics (ITCs), turbulence intensities and turbulence spectra were analyzed. The time intervals were selected with respect to atmospheric stability parameter, known as Obukhov number. We concentrated on the days with higher wind velocity and neutral atmospheric stratification. The wind characteristics investigated in this study include the wind speed, wind direction and its histograms, turbulence intensity, friction velocity and wind power spectra. The ITCs and spectral characteristics were compared with the theoretical models and values from the literature. The resulting ITCs showed the values for urban locations similar to those found in other studies and can be used in practical design. The computed turbulence spectra followed the shape of theoretical spectra of turbulence for both horizontal and vertical velocity components. The computed integral length scales have shown to be unsuitable for further use due to their highly scattered values.

  • We analyze competitiveness of material and component industry(MCI) of Korea, China and Japan using trade data, OECD ITCS database with HS-code system. We use unit price indices, export unit price index, import unit price index, and TOT unit price index. These indices provide quality information from trade data of value and quantity. Our results show that there are quality gaps among three countries, and that China expand development potential, and the results vary as sectors. It implies that R&D investment to improve quality of MCI products is essential and that sector-specific policy is necessary.

  • Over the last few decades, various innovative technologies have emerged that have significantly contributed to making life easier for humans. Various information and communication technologies (ITCs) have emerged as a result of the global technological revolution, including big data, IoT, 4G and 5G networks, cloud computing, mobile computing, and artificial intelligence. These technologies have been adopted in urban planning and development, which gave rise to the concept of smart cities in the 1990s. A smart city is a type of city that uses ITCs to exchange and share information to enhance the quality of services for its citizens. With the global population increasing at unprecedented levels, cities are overwhelmed with a myriad of challenges, such as the energy crisis, environmental pollution, sanitation and sewage challenges, and water quality issues, and therefore, have become a convergence point of economic, social, and environmental risks. The concept of a smart city is a multidisciplinary, unified approach that has been adopted by governments and municipalities worldwide to overcome these challenges. Though challenging, this transformation is essential for cities with differing technological and social features, which all have the potential to determine the success or failure of the digital transformation of cities into smart cities. In recent years, researchers, businesses, and the government have all turned their attention to the emerging field of smart cities. Accordingly, this paper aims to represent a thorough understanding of the movement toward smart cities. The key themes identified are smart city definitions and concepts, smart city dimensions, and smart city architecture of different layers. Furthermore, this article discusses the challenges and some examples of smart cities.
