  • Recently, there have been increasing studies on the application of digital technology, which has its focus of the irregular building. However, most of these studies have not clarified the objective of the technology and the effectiveness of professional manpower on its performance. This study analyzes actual used technology and the role of specialty contractor. It presents a framework to quantify the performance of the specialty contractor. For these purposes, this paper presents a proposed method to evaluate the activities of specialty contractors using a queueing model. As an attempt to verify the model, an actual irregular building project, in which digital fabrication is applied, is investigated during the construction phase. In order to collect the digital fabrication data, digital fabrication reports and specialty contractor's work log of project are reviewed. In addition, Digital Fabrication input personnel, productivity data are collected through interviews with experts involving in the case project. Analysis of specialty contractor's performance in digital fabrication reveals that the wait status of project participants varies probabilistically depending on the digital technology application level. The results of this study are expected to contribute toward the improvement of the production level in the construction industry.

  • From the mid-1990s in Korea, performance assessment has been continuously emphasized in school mathematics and thus many researchers and teachers have been steadily studying this topic. But the concepts relevant to performance assessment and its purposes are very confusing because the mathematics educators' different views and voices are vary. As a result most mathematics teachers experience trouble in executing performance assessment properly and effectively in their math class. This unability for proper execution of performance assessment was once again revealed in this study which dealt with 15 articles on performance assessment. These 15 articles includes almost every article written on the topic of performance assessment that have been published in 4 domestic journals since December 1997. By examining this inability, it is required that its concepts and purposes should be organized with a common view and newly defined in the near future. Therefore, to successfully accomplish this, this paper outlines the basic problems on the understanding of performance assessment as follows: ㆍWhat is the relationship between performance assessment and alternative assessment\ulcorner ㆍWhat is the proper types(methods) of performance assessment\ulcorner ㆍIs the subject test a type of performance assessment\ulcorner ㆍWhat is the difference between subject test and essay test\ulcorner ㆍWhat is the relationship between performance assessment and performance tasks\ulcorner ㆍWhat is the relationship between performance tests and project method\ulcorner ㆍWhat is a project method\ulcorner ㆍIs it assessment standard or scoring standard to score a test result\ulcorner ㆍWhat is the difference between analytic scoring method and holistic scoring method?

  • Simulation is becoming increasingly popular in construction for training, planning and for assessment of projects. There are, however, significant problems inherent in simulating construction which are not common to other simulations. This paper describes the development and use of computer-based game for teaching and learning of some aspects of construction project management. It is concerned with the development of a model used to simulate the construction of a rock- and clay-fill dam. It includes detailed physical modelling of the performance of individual pieces of equipment and their interaction with the ground, the geography of the project and the weather in which the equipment operates. The behaviour of all of the individual pieces of equipment when acting as fleets is also discussed. The paper also describes the modelling issues of non-technical aspects of earthmoving operations. These include environmental impact, safety, quality and risks. The problems of integrating these with the physics-based models of the equipment performance are discussed. The paper also draws on real experience of using the game in classes in three universities in different countries.

  • This study aims to analyze on the change status in the project plan of the housing complex as evaluated through the Housing Performance Grading Indication System. This a a system for assessing quantitatively the comprehensive, unified performance of housing by an objective standard from the design stage since January 9, 2006. As housing is a composite with various performances, it is required necessary to objectively assess the various performances from the design stage for building better housing. Thus, this study analyzed the change status and objectively described objectively it centering on the construction and structure drawings for 12 items posted in the Facility Management System_(FMS) out of examples recognized by 2011 since the implementation of the system. The changes were analyzed though observing each performance item-specific characteristics and confirming the books approved for use. In various parts, such as the site area, landscape plan, plane plan for unit, supplementary welfare facility plan, finishing materials, window size and location, the project plan was changed. These changes may result in a grading change in of the performance items of the system. This study purpose is for it to be used as a basic resource required for future system development by supplementing the limitation of the design phase and then through playing a basic role for the assessment after completion.

  • No single project is identical to one another in the construction industry. Furthermore, many construction projects are suffering from tighter budget, shortened schedule and higher client satisfaction level. To overcome these, project managers and engineers are willing to apply various best management practices to their projects. However, it is non-trivial to select the most appropriate practices for their projects. In many cases, it is much more important to find the appropriateness of the management practices than just to use the practices. Although many researchers are focusing on the development of new management practices, there is little research on matching between the circumstances of projects and the developed management practices. The objective of this study is to provide a structured process to suggest the best management practices for individual construction projects by developing a computerized system where an individual project is matched with the most optimal management practices to increase the value of the project. At this stage of writing, the authors have developed a computerized system to effectively find out the best suitable management practices for individual projects. By maximizing the usages of this system, it would facilitate the application of the best management practices in the industry.

  • This writing is about an effort to try to preserve and transmit the materials related to Jing-Ju(京劇) who is the Chinese traditional theatrical art. The plan to preserve the materials of performing arts is very important because its collection and preservation about them are much more particular than other genres. China got the great results in this field because of China Jing-Ju Yinpeixiang (中國京劇音配像) project. Jing-Ju Yinpeixiang project is a kind of project to restore and preserve the materials which reproduced Jing-Ju repertoire by inserting the performance method of Yinpeixiang (音配像: put together images to sounds) by later actors and actresses of Jing-Ju in recordings of 1950s to 1960s by remained famous ones. Also, this is the large scale culture project that more than 170 institutions and more than 3000 persons participated in during the total 21 years that it first started in 1985 and was completed in the end of 2006. Thanks to this project, China got to have the almost perfect materials which reproduced live performances to add the images of junior actors and actresses who accurately imitated performances of 115 famous actors and actresses including each type of role, schools and great actors from 1907 to the end of 20th century in their voices. This is the only method to restore the materials in this world and very creative. It's been 15 years since TV broadcasting first showed its fruition to Chinese people. The Chinese government gave the positive judgement on this project and prepared to hold the big event which celebrated itself this year. But very little is known of this process and there is no any study in Korea. This writing tried to clarify what Jing-Ju Yinpeixiang project is, what it has meant to Chinese people and what results it has gotten after it's been 15 years since the first show was on TV.

  • One of the most difficult tasks in pavement management information systems is establishing the links between performance measures of a structure and the design and construction inputs. In-situ pavement performance can be considered a response variable to many project input variables, such as design, construction, and traffic loading effects. If we are to fully understand the component of pavement performance and specify the inputs through design and construction specifications to achieve that performance we must develop quantitative relationship between input and response variables through a scientific, fully integrated Pavement Performance Analysis System (PPAS). Hence, the objective of this study is to design a database model required for developing an effective database template that will allow analysis of pavement performance measures based on design and construction information linked by location. In order to select the most appropriate database model, a conceptual database model (Entity Relationship Model) and dimensional model, which is believed to be the most effective modeling technique for data warehouse project, are designed and compared. It is believed that other state highway agencies could adopt the proposed design strategy for implementing a PPAS at the discretion of the state highway agencies.
