  • As the number of successful design innovation product cases in business increases, interest in design innovation is increasing. This study aims to examine how the design innovation (functionality, ergonomics, aesthetics) of Bluetooth speaker products affects the customer's preference and purchase intention. It proposes a research model through rational behavior theory (TRA) and technology acceptance model (TAM) for empirical research. The questionnaire was composed of questions to understand the influence of design innovation, favorability, and purchase intention. As a result of the study, functionality, ergonomics, and aesthetics influenced product preference and purchase intention. In order for the innovative product of Bluetooth speaker design to be accepted in the early market, it is most important to form a positive attitude toward favorability centering on function and aesthetics. Favorability is a factor that has the most decisive influence on the purchase intention of design innovation products, and companies must discover and reinforce various factors that positively affect the preference.

  • In recent years, the business model innovation of small and medium-sized enterprises has become a hot research issue, and it is also regarded as an important hot issue to promote the transformation and development of small and medium-sized enterprises and promote economic transformation and development. In this study, we analyzes the influence of cross-border search and dynamic capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises in China on business model innovation. The model of influencing factors is established. After collecting relevant data through questionnaire survey, the model is verified and analyzed. It is verified that for small and medium-sized enterprises in China, dynamic capability and cross-border search have a positive and significant impact on enterprise business model innovation, and dynamic capability plays an intermediary role between cross-border search and enterprise business model innovation. Through this paper, we can give some enlightenment to the business model innovation of small and medium-sized enterprises in China.

  • Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) endeavor to overcome the adverse resource conditions and secure competitive advantage through technological innovation capability. Prior studies have focused on the overall or specific dimensions of technological innovation capability, and examined their performance impact. However, there has been less scholarly attention on the dynamic characteristics such as the relative importance of technological innovation capability or its performance impact at the different growth stages of a firm. In this vein, this study investigates the relationship between SME innovation capability and innovation performance at each growth stages of a firm. Based on the empirical analysis of manufacturing SMEs in Korea, we found that all dimensions of technological innovation capability had positive effects on innovation performance. However, each dimension of technological innovation capability had different effect on innovation performance by the growth stages. The planning capability can improve innovation performance at the growth and maturity stages. Manufacturing capability can have positive effect on innovation performance at the maturity stage. Both of new product development capability and commercialization capability contribute to innovation performance at all of the growth stages. This study suggests the guidelines for enhancing technological innovation capability at the different growth stages of SMEs. It also provides policy implications for the design and operation of growth-stage specific programs. Finally, the limitations of the research and future research directions are presented.

  • As the service industry is advancing, the meaning of service innovation has been evolved. Recently, service innovation embraces all creative activities about service offering or relevant to service offerings and emphasizes the importance of customers in innovation process as a key driver. The innovation in services is often the result from a collaborative process between KIBS firms and client firms. Many researchers have pointed out about how the KIBS firms drive the innovation through service. In spite of the importance of service innovation, previous studies did not address the questions about what kinds of factors affect service innovation in KIBS firms still remain, or what are the effects of different knowledge on the innovation process. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the interactivity that KIBS firms have with their customers on various types of innovations in KIBS firms. Interactivity has been touted to be the most important starting point for and the basis of service innovations. This study also examines the effect of knowledge types (tacit or explicit) on the relationship between interactivity and service innovation. To test the proposed hypotheses, we developed measurement items and distributed survey questionnaires to domestic companies. 230 survey questionnaires were distributed and 81 were returned among which 76 were usable. The results of this study show that interactivity may be a significant indicator of innovation within KIBS firms. It also represents that the effect of knowledge types on the relationship between interactivity and innovation. These results indicate that KIBS firms need to improve the various activities of interaction with customers for innovation. This study provides a blueprint to further investigation of the critical role of service in service science perspectives.

  • In this study, we have examined the effect of open innovation of SMEs on innovation performance of firms. Most studies do not consider internal generation in relation to open innovation and innovation performance. We conducted empirical studies to overcome this problem. The research was carried out by collecting data collected from 512 SMEs and the 3SLS method was used to minimize the internal generation. As a result, open innovation investment and use of external ideas among SMEs' open innovation have positively influenced project success and technical performance. But, the introduction of technology and cooperation with the research organization did not affect the innovation performance, which is presumed to be due to the fact that the open innovation of SMEs is limited to relatively inexpensive activities. Therefore, in order to promote open innovation of SMEs, it is necessary to provide support for relatively high-cost activities and to improve the innovation performance of enterprises. In order to reduce the difficulties of open innovation activities, domestic universities and research institutes should support the construction of enterprise networks and actively support the utilization of technology to expand innovation performance.

  • This study aims to analyze determinants and complementarities of the technological innovation protection mechanisms of Korean manufacturing firms. The results of the inter-industry comparison show that there are differentiations of the determinants among industries. Independence between legal and strategic protection mechanisms is found in the high technology industry, whereas complementarities exist between them in the low technology industry. It implies that the firms should take into account their endogenous and exogenous factors to choose appropriate combinations of the mechanisms when they build up their innovation protection strategies. This study expects to contribute to establishing technological innovation protection strategies in manufacturing industry.

  • The diffusion of innovation theory provided the basis for a model of agricultural development that the extension service continues to use today. This study aims to examine the history, influence, and impacts of innovation diffusion theory on the extension service. It reviews some of the major developments in the literature related to the theory, examines its criticisms, and discusses the implications for extension. As such, innovators are younger, more cosmopolitan, have higher incomes than later adopters, and have the largest operations of all adopter categories. There are two critiques on diffusion of innovation theory in which are the method and inequity recurring from diffusion.

  • This paper, based on two engineering industry SME case studies, traces the origin and process of technological innovations enabling the development and introduction of new products leading to market expansion and enterprise growth. The study throws light on how entrepreneurs played a decisive role in recognizing market opportunities, building up crucial in-house technological capability, supplementing it with appropriate external assistance, to carry out technological innovations. A constant interaction with its customers is in-built into the system. As a result, the SMEs could achieve successful product innovations leading to their gradual growth, over time. Finally, based on the observations and inferences derived out of the two cases, a theoretical construct of the growth of innovation in SMEs is postulated. This is done linking the three stages of their development: (i) start-up and stabilizing, (ii) building up technological capability and implementing innovations; and (iii) opening up of new markets resulting in firm growth.

  • Korean technological innovation is characterized by large firm-leading and characterized sector such as electricity and electronics. We examine the relationship between two elements. Using patent data registered at USPTO by Korean firms, We examine the relationship between patterns of innovative activities and sectoral specialization. As a result, Korean technological innovation is characterized by relatively high asymmetry, big share of large firms, high stability of ranking of innovators and diminishing role of newcomer, therefore as close as Schumpeter Mark II. But technological specialization is associated positively with the big share of large firms, negatively with low stability of ranking of innovators. It means that Korean technological innovation is led by large firms, but quantitative growth and technological specialization is achieved through competition between them.
