Purpose: As Korea has been rapidly transformed to be a multicultural society, it becomes essential for nurses to develop cultural competency. The purpose of this descriptive study was to assess the cultural competency level of general hospital nurses and to examine its contributing factors adopting ecological model. Method: A convenience sample of 327 nurses from six general hospitals in Seoul metropolitan area was recruited between November 14 to 28, 2011. Cultural competency was measured using the Korean version of the Caffrey Cultural Competence in Healthcare Scale (CCCHS) and Cultural Competence Assessment(CCA). Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the influence of intrapersonal, cultural-experience, and organizational factors on cultural competency. Results: Mean cultural competency in this study was 2.57(${\pm}0.43$). Cultural competency was associated with job position (p=.044) at the intrapersonal level. At the cultural experience level, foreign language classes experience (p=.005), fluency in a foreign language (p=.000), experience of working with foreign health care professionals (p=.000) were associated cultural competency. At the organizational level, training program (p=.000), job description (p=.002), health education materials (p=.016), insufficient job control (p=.000), and interpersonal conflicts (p=.011) showed significant difference. Foreign language class experience, foreign language fluency, experience of working with foreign health care professionals, and job control were the most consistent predictors of cultural competence and explained 20.4% of the total variance in the proposed ecological model. Conclusions: The findings suggest that to enhance cultural competency in general hospital nurses, cultural experience and organizational factors need to be more fully considered than intrapersonal factors.
The present study identify the predictive power of confrontational naming and generative naming as screening tests for normal and early cognitive impairment. The subjects were analyzed for 203 healthy elderly, 106 mild cognitive impairment (MCI), 31 mild dementia. The confrontational naming was measured by the short-term Korean Boston Name Waiting Test, and the generative naming was measured by the Control Associative Word Test. As a result of polynomial logistic regression, both confrontational naming and generative naming had a significant effect on discriminating cognitive impairment (MCI, mild dementia) in general elderly (p<0.05). On the other hand, when distinguishing mild dementia from mild cognitive impairment, the generative naming-phonetic test had no significant odds ratio. The results of this study suggest that when discriminating mild dementia in mild cognitive impairment group, it is not meaningful to look only at the total score of generative naming test.
The current study investigates how Malaysian ESL learners' L2 (English) speaking fluency is reflected in advanced L2 reading and what difficulties they encounter in reading comprehension. Nine Malaysian students attending a Korean university participated in qualitative research using in-depth and semi-structured interviews. The data revealed that L2 was a very familiar language, and their speaking fluency in L2 reduced the anxiety of L2 reading in general. However, it did not play a significant role in reading at an advanced level. Their difficulties in reading were mainly due to a lack of vocabulary knowledge. However, insufficient background knowledge and interest also frustrated their reading tasks. These factors lowered their reading comprehension, causing inaccurate interpretations or discouraging their endeavors to find messages from the given text. Thus, these findings should be carefully addressed in reading classes for Korean L2 learners as well as international students.
This study investigated the relative effectiveness of letter-based versus syllable-based measures of speech rate and articulation rate in predicting the articulation score, prosody fluency, and rating sum using "English speech data of Koreans for education" from AI Hub. We extracted and analyzed 900 utterances from the training data, including three balanced age groups (13, 19, and 26 years old). The study built three models that best predicted the pronunciation assessment scores using linear mixed-effects regression and compared the predicted scores with the actual scores from the validation data (n=180). The correlation coefficients between them were also calculated. The findings revealed that syllable-based measures of speech and articulation rates were more effective than letter-based measures in all three pronunciation assessment categories. The correlation coefficients between the predicted and actual scores ranged from .65 to .68, indicating the models' good predictive power. However, it remains inconclusive whether speech rate or articulation rate is more effective.

An axial flow fan design system has been made by integrating the self-developed programs and I-DEAS. By using the system, an axial flow fan was designed, manufactured and verified through the wind tunnel experiments in coorperation with a refrigerator appliance division. It has been shown that the optimal design without the ambiguity of the design parameters can be possible by the three-dimensional flow simulations using a self-developed CID code, FANS-3D. (Flow Analysis code using Navier Stokes aguations in Three-Dimensional curvilinear coordinates). By virtue of the fluency of the data flow, an optimally designed fan which satisfies design conditions can be selected in a short time and less cost. The manufacturing processes of a Mock-up and an injection molding die have been automated through the self-made interface programs which connnect from the start to the end. It has been shown that the newly developed fan by this system has a superior performance characteristics to an existing fan.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of advertisement-making activities on young children's language ability and creativity. The subjects of this study were 47 five-years-old children from child care center located in Gwangju City. The collected data were analyzed by idependent t-test using SPSS Program. The results of this study were as follows; First, experimental group which conducted the advertisement-making activities showed significantly higher improvement in sub-factors of language abilities, common sense, comprehension, vocabulary ability, commonness than comparative group. Second, experimental group which conducted the advertisement-making activities showed significantly higher improvement in sub-factors of creativity, fluency, uniqueness, elaboration than comparative group. It means that the advertisement-making activities improve young children's language ability and creativity.
In this paper, we focus on the creative attitude in mathematics as one aspect of mathematical creativity. To measure the creative attitude, we first introduce some prior studies and CAS (Creative Attitude Scale) designed by Noboru Saito in Japan. We develop the CAS-K (Creative Attitude Scale-Korea) including 33 items of 7 factors based on CAS which has 27 items. The factors are fluency, appropriateness, positiveness, independency, concentration, convergency, and accuracy. In CAS-K, it is important to give the information about students' creative attitude for each factor. Thereby, CAS-K can be useful sources of creative attitude to foster mathematical creativity. Rather than the total scores, we emphasize applications and results from CAS-K relating to the 7 factors.
The purpose of this study is to examine 4-5 year older's creative thinking and to investigate the interrelationship between young child's creative thinking and their mother's supportive child-rearing behavior. The subjects were 125 pairs of 4-5 year olders and their mothers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The Multidimensional Stimulus Fluency Measure(Van Hook & Tegano, 2002) was revised and used to measure children's creative thinking. For determining mother's supportive child-rearing behavior, the Child Rearing Behavior Observation Scale (Renshaw & Gardner, 1990) was revised and used. The major results were as follows: first, there is no significant difference between boys and girls, and between the 4 year-olders and 5 year-olders in the "child's creative thinking". Second, when mothers properly keep encouraging children's creative behavior in the course of performing their task, it can significantly effect on the development of their creative thinking.
In today's firms, there is an increasing awareness amongst managers and executives on the importance of secretary's role. This is a study on the profile of the corporate executive secretary's job responsibilities with emphasis on communication skills, interpersonal and foreign language fluency, which I deem relevant to their position. As a result, I believe that an executive secretary must obtain at least a two-year secretarial degree, Furthermore, I propose that their education must include and stress emphasis in foreign languages. Nevertheless, I feel that in today's global economy, it is important that executive secretaries are fluent in at least two(2) foreign languages that would enable him/her to write his/her boss' speeches, editing dictated materials and creating corresspondences. This study is believed to contribute to the education of the future executive secretaries and the managers etc.
Measurement has been an important part of mathematics content students must learn through their schooling. Many studies suggest students' weak measurement learning, particularly related to length measurement, on the part of lower grade students. This difficulty has been attributed to mathematics curriculum as well as instruction. Building on a view of teaching as an interactive activity, this paper explores how a first grade teacher interacted with her students in small groups in a length measurement lesson to promote conceptual understanding as well as procedural fluency. I found that even though the teacher supported students to explain and justify what they understood, the ways the teacher interacted with students were not effective to promote students' understanding. Even though this finding is based on an analysis of a single mathematics lesson, it provides an example of challenges in promoting students' understanding through interaction with students in the context of teaching length measurement.
